Note: | This thesis examines a novel class of flexible electronic material with great potential for use in the construction of stretchable amplifiers and memory elements. Most remarkably the composite material produces spontaneousoscillations that increase i n frequency when pressure is applied to it. In this way, the material mimics the excitatory response of pressure-sensing neurons in the human skin. The composites, formed of silicone and graphiticnanoparticles, were prepared in several allotropic forms an d functionalized with naphthalene diimide molecules. A systematic study is presented of the negative differential resistance (NDR) region of the current-voltage curves, whichis responsible for the materials active properties. This study was conducted as a function of temperature, graphite filling fraction, scaling to reveal the break-up of the samples into electric field domains at the onset of the NDRregion, and an electric-field induced metal-insulator transition in graphite nanoparticles. The effect of molecular functionalization on the miscibility threshold and the current-voltage curves is demonstrated. Note: | In recent years, ever more electronic devices have started to exploit the advantages of organic semiconductors. The work reported in this thesis focuses on analyzing theoretically the energy level alignment of differentmetal/organic interfaces, neces sary to tailor devices with good performance. Traditional methods based on density functional theory (DFT), are not appropriate for analyzing them because they underestimate the organic energy gap andfail to correctly describe the van der Waals forces. Si nce the size of these systems prohibits the use of more accurate methods, corrections to those DFT drawbacks are desirable. In this work a combination of a standard DFT calculationwith the inclusion of the charging energy (U) of the molecule, calculated f rom first principles, is presented. Regarding the dispersion forces, incorrect long range interaction is substituted by a van der Waals potential. With thesecorrections, the C60, benzene, pentacene, TTF and TCNQ/Au(111) interfaces are analyzed, both for s ingle molecules and for a monolayer. The results validate the induced density of interface states model |

Note: | Theory of Nonlinear Propagation of High Harmonics Generated in a Gaseous Medium establishes the theoretical tools to study High-Order Harmonic Generation (HHG) by intense ultrafast infrared lasers inatoms and molecules. Themacroscopic propagation of both laser and high-harmonic fields is taken into account by solving Maxwell's wave equations, while the single-atom or single-molecule response is treated with a quantitative rescattering theory by solvingthe time-dependent Schrdinger equation. This book demonstrates for the first time that observed experimental HHG spectra of atoms and molecules can be accurately reproduced theoretically when precise experimental conditions areknown. The macroscopic HHG can be expressed as a product of a macroscopic wav e packet and a photorecombination cross section, where the former depends on laser and experimental conditions while the latter is the property of targetatoms or molecules. The factorization makes it possible to retrieve microscopically atomic or molecula r structure information from the measured macroscopic HHG spectra. This book also investigates other important issues about HHG, suchas contributions from multiple molecular orbitals, the minimum in the HHG spectrum, the spatial mode of laser beams, and t he generation of an isolated attosecond pulse. Note: | Ion Correlations at Electrified Soft Matter Interfaces presents an investigation that combines experiments, theory, and computer simulations to demonstrate that the interdependency between ion correlations and other ioninteractions in solution can ex plain the distribution of ions near an electrified liquid/liquid interface. The properties of this interface are exploited to vary the coupling strength of ion-ion correlations from weak to strong whilemonitoring their influence on ion distributions at th e nanometer scale with X-ray reflectivity and on the macroscopic scale with interfacial tension measurements. This thesis demonstrates that a parameter-free density functional theorythat includes ion-ion correlations and ion-solvent interactions is in agr eement with the data over the entire range of experimentally tunable correlation coupling strengths. The reported findings represent a significant advance towardsunderstanding the nature and role of ion correlations in charged soft-matter. Ion distributio ns underlie many scientific phenomena and technological applications, including electrostatic interactions between charged biomolecules andthe efficiency of energy storage devices. These distributions are determined by interactions dictated by the chemica l properties of the ions and their environment, as well as the long-range nature of the electrostatic force. Thepresence of strong correlations between ions is responsible for counterintuitive effects such as like-charge attraction |
