Title:Fundamentals of Fluorescence Microscopy [electronic resource] : Exploring Life with Light
Author(s): Partha Pratim Mondal
Alberto Diaspro
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book starts at an introductory level and leads reader to the most advanced developments in fluorescence imaging and super-resolution techniques that have enabled the emergence of new disciplines such as nanobioimaging, multiphoton microscopy, pho todynamic therapy, nanometrology and nanosensors. The interdisciplinary subject of fluorescence microscopy and imaging requires complete knowledge of imaging optics and molecular physics. So, this bookapproaches the subject by introducing optical imaging concepts before going deep into the advanced imaging systems and their applications. Molecular orbital theory forms the basis for understanding fluorescent molecules and therebyfacilitates complete explanation of light-matter interaction at the geometrica l focus. The two disciplines have some overlap since light controls the states of molecules and conversely, molecular states control the emitted light. Thesetwo mechanisms together determine essential fluorescence factors and phenomena such as, molecular cross-section, Stokes shift, emission and absorption spectra, quantum yield, signal-to-noise ratio, Forster resonance energy transfer(FRET), fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence lifetime. These phenomena form the basis of man y fluorescence based devices. The book is organized into two parts. The first part deals with basics of imagingoptics and its applications. The advanced part covers many imaging techniques and related instrumentation that are developed in the last decade pointing towards far-field diffraction limited and unlimited imaging

Title:Polarization Bremsstrahlung [electronic resource]
Author(s): Andrey V Korol
Andrey V Solov'yov
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book introduces and reviews both theory and applications of polarizational bremsstrahlung, i.e. the electromagnetic radiation emitted during collisions of charged particles with structured, thus polarizable targets, such asatoms, molecules and c lusters. The subject, following the first experimental evidence a few decades ago, has gained importance through a number of modern applications. Thus, the study of several radiative mechanisms is expected tolead to the design of novel light sources, ope rating in various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Conversely, the analysis of the spectral and angular distribution of the photon emission constitutes a new tool for extractinginformation on the interaction of the colliding particles, and on their internal structure and dynamical properties. Last but not least, accurate quantitative descriptions of the photon emission processes determine the radiativeenergy losses of particles in various media, thereby providing essential information required for e.g. plasma diagnostics as well as astrophysical and medical applications (such as radiation therapy). This book primarilyaddresses graduate students and researchers with a background in atomic, molecular, optical or plasma physics, but will also be of b enefit to anyone wishing to enter the field.

Title:Young-Type Interferences with Electrons [electronic resource] : Basics and Theoretical Challenges in Molecular Collision Systems
Author(s): Franois Frmont
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Since the discovery that atomic-size particles can be described as waves, many interference experiments have been realized with electrons to demonstrate their wave behavior. In this book, after describing the different steps thatled to the present kn owledge, we focus on the strong link existing between photon and electron interferences, highlighting the similarities and the differences. For example, the atomic centers of a hydrogen molecule are used to mimicthe slits in the Young's famous interferenc e experiment with light. We show, however, that the basic time-dependent ionization theories that describe these Young-type electron interferences are not able to reproduce the experiment. This crucial point remains a real challenge for theoreticians in at omic collision physics

Title:International Conference on Theory and Application in Nonlinear Dynamics (ICAND 2012) [electronic resource]
Author(s): Visarath In
Antonio Palacios
Patrick Longhini
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:A collection of different lectures presented by experts in the field of nonlinear science provides the reader with contemporary, cutting-edge, research works that bridge the gap between theory and device realizations of nonlinearphenomena. Represent ative examples of topics covered include: chaos gates, social networks, communication, sensors, lasers, molecular motors, biomedical anomalies, stochastic resonance, nano-oscillators for generating microwavesignals and related complex systems. A common th eme among these and many other related lectures is to model, study, understand, and exploit the rich behavior exhibited by nonlinear systems to design and fabricate novel technologieswith superior characteristics. Consider, for instance, the fact that a s harks sensitivity to electric fields is 400 times more powerful than the most sophisticated electric-field sensor. In spite of significant advances in materialproperties, in many cases it remains a daunting task to duplicate the superior signal processing capabilities of most animals. Since nonlinear systems tend to be highly sensitive to perturbations when they occur near the onset of abifurcation, there are also lectures on the general topic of bifurcation theory and on how to exploit such bifurcations for signal enhancements purposes. This manuscript will appeal to researchers interested in both theory andimplementations of nonlinear systems.

Title:Basic Concepts in Computational Physics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Benjamin A. Stickler
Ewald Schachinger
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:With the development of ever more powerful computers a new branch of physics and engineering evolved over the last few decades: Computer Simulation or Computational Physics. It serves two main purposes: - Solution of complexmathematical problems such as, differential equations, minimization/optimization, or high-dimensional sums/integrals. - Direct simulation of physical processes, as for instance, molecular dynamics or Monte-Carlo simulation ofphysical/chemical/technical processes. Consequently, the book is divided into two main parts: Deterministic methods and stochastic methods. Based on concrete problems, the first part discusses numerical differentiation and integration, and the treatment of ordinary differential equations. This is augmented by n otes on the numerics of partial differential equations. The second part discusses the generation of random numbers, summarizes the basics of stochastics whichis then followed by the introduction of various Monte-Carlo (MC) methods. Specific emphasis is on MARKOV chain MC algorithms. All this is again augmented by numerous applications from physics. The final two chapters on Data Analysisand Stochastic Optimization share the two main topics as a common denominator. The book offers a number of appendices to provide the reader with more detailed information on various topics discussed in the main part. Nevertheless, thereader should be familiar with the most important concepts of statistics and probability theory albeit two appendices have been dedicated to provide a rudimentary discussion

Title:Electrical Properties of Graphite Nanoparticles in Silicone [electronic resource] : Flexible Oscillators and Electromechanical Sensing
Author(s): Samuel David Littlejohn
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This thesis examines a novel class of flexible electronic material with great potential for use in the construction of stretchable amplifiers and memory elements. Most remarkably the composite material produces spontaneousoscillations that increase i n frequency when pressure is applied to it. In this way, the material mimics the excitatory response of pressure-sensing neurons in the human skin. The composites, formed of silicone and graphiticnanoparticles, were prepared in several allotropic forms an d functionalized with naphthalene diimide molecules. A systematic study is presented of the negative differential resistance (NDR) region of the current-voltage curves, whichis responsible for the materials active properties. This study was conducted as a function of temperature, graphite filling fraction, scaling to reveal the break-up of the samples into electric field domains at the onset of the NDRregion, and an electric-field induced metal-insulator transition in graphite nanoparticles. The effect of molecular functionalization on the miscibility threshold and the current-voltage curves is demonstrated. Room-temperature andlow-temperature measurements were performed on these composite films under strains using a remote-controlled, custom-made step mo tor bench

Title:Scattering Theory [electronic resource]
Author(s): Harald Friedrich
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book presents a concise and modern coverage of scattering theory. It is motivated by the fact that experimental advances have shifted and broadened the scope of applications where concepts from scattering theory are used,e.g. tothe field of ultr acold atoms and molecules, which has been experiencing enormous growth in recent years, largely triggered by the successful realization of Bose-Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases in 1995. In thepresent treatment, special attention is given to the role played by the long-range behaviour of the projectile-target interaction, and a theory is developed, which is well suited todescribe near-threshold bound and continuum statesin realistic binary systems such as diatomic molecules or molecular ions. Th e level of abstraction is keptas low as at all possible, and deeper questions related tomathematical foundations of scattering theory are passed by. Thebookshould beunderstandable for anyone with a basic knowledge of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. It i s intended for advanced students and researchers, and it is hoped that it will be useful for theorists and experimentalistsalike

Note:Nonlinear optical (NLO) phenomena such as frequency conversion have played a key role in the development of photonic technologies. This thesis reports a detailed study of the molecular response of a large variety of push-pullorganic compounds using t he Second Harmonic Generation technique, which will serve as a starting point for the investigation at the macroscopic scale of azobenzene-based liquid crystalline polymeric films and their blends with highlyefficient NLO chromophores. These materials are designed with the aim of exploiting their photo-addressability in order to tailor their nonlinear behaviour. The magnitude and symmetry of theirnonlinear response was successfullycontrolled via light irradiation and thermal treatments. Moreover, as a spe cific application, the recording of efficient NLO gratings was achieved and is described here

Title:Energy Level Alignment and Electron Transport Through Metal/Organic Contacts [electronic resource] : From Interfaces to Molecular Electronics
Author(s): Enrique Abad

Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:In recent years, ever more electronic devices have started to exploit the advantages of organic semiconductors. The work reported in this thesis focuses on analyzing theoretically the energy level alignment of differentmetal/organic interfaces, neces sary to tailor devices with good performance. Traditional methods based on density functional theory (DFT), are not appropriate for analyzing them because they underestimate the organic energy gap andfail to correctly describe the van der Waals forces. Si nce the size of these systems prohibits the use of more accurate methods, corrections to those DFT drawbacks are desirable. In this work a combination of a standard DFT calculationwith the inclusion of the charging energy (U) of the molecule, calculated f rom first principles, is presented. Regarding the dispersion forces, incorrect long range interaction is substituted by a van der Waals potential. With thesecorrections, the C60, benzene, pentacene, TTF and TCNQ/Au(111) interfaces are analyzed, both for s ingle molecules and for a monolayer. The results validate the induced density of interface states model

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Diffusion processes are a promising instrument for realistically modelling the time-continuous evolution of phenomena not only in the natural sciences but also in finance and economics. Their mathematical theory, however, ischallenging, and hence dif fusion modelling is often carried out incorrectly, and the according statistical inference is considered almost exclusively by theoreticians. This book explains both topics in an illustrative way which alsoaddresses practitioners. It provides a complete o verview of the current state of research and presents important, novel insights. The theory is demonstrated using real data applications

Title:Quantum Entanglement in Electron Optics [electronic resource] : Generation, Characterization, and Applications
Author(s):
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This monograph forms an interdisciplinary study in atomic, molecular, and quantum information (QI) science. Here a reader will find that applications of the tools developed in QI provide new physical insights into electron opticsas well as properties of atoms & molecules which, in turn, are useful in studying QI both at fundamental and applied levels. In particular, this book investigates entanglement properties of flying electronic qubits generated in some ofthe well known processes capable of takin g place in an atom or a molecule following the absorption of a photon. Here, one can generate Coulombic or fine-structure entanglement of electronic qubits. The properties of these entanglementsdiffer not only from each other, but also from those when spi n of an inner-shell photoelectron is entangled with the polarization of the subsequent fluorescence. Spins of an outer-shell electron and of a residual photoion can have freeor bound entanglement in a laboratory

Title:Theory of Nonlinear Propagation of High Harmonics Generated in a Gaseous Medium [electronic resource]
Author(s): Cheng Jin
Date:2013
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Theory of Nonlinear Propagation of High Harmonics Generated in a Gaseous Medium establishes the theoretical tools to study High-Order Harmonic Generation (HHG) by intense ultrafast infrared lasers inatoms and molecules. Themacroscopic propagation of both laser and high-harmonic fields is taken into account by solving Maxwell's wave equations, while the single-atom or single-molecule response is treated with a quantitative rescattering theory by solvingthe time-dependent Schrdinger equation. This book demonstrates for the first time that observed experimental HHG spectra of atoms and molecules can be accurately reproduced theoretically when precise experimental conditions areknown. The macroscopic HHG can be expressed as a product of a macroscopic wav e packet and a photorecombination cross section, where the former depends on laser and experimental conditions while the latter is the property of targetatoms or molecules. The factorization makes it possible to retrieve microscopically atomic or molecula r structure information from the measured macroscopic HHG spectra. This book also investigates other important issues about HHG, suchas contributions from multiple molecular orbitals, the minimum in the HHG spectrum, the spatial mode of laser beams, and t he generation of an isolated attosecond pulse. Additionally, this book presents the photoelectron angulardistribution of aligned molecules ionized by the HHG light

Title:Ion Correlations at Electrified Soft Matter Interfaces [electronic resource]
Author(s): Nouamane Laanait
Date:2013
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Ion Correlations at Electrified Soft Matter Interfaces presents an investigation that combines experiments, theory, and computer simulations to demonstrate that the interdependency between ion correlations and other ioninteractions in solution can ex plain the distribution of ions near an electrified liquid/liquid interface. The properties of this interface are exploited to vary the coupling strength of ion-ion correlations from weak to strong whilemonitoring their influence on ion distributions at th e nanometer scale with X-ray reflectivity and on the macroscopic scale with interfacial tension measurements. This thesis demonstrates that a parameter-free density functional theorythat includes ion-ion correlations and ion-solvent interactions is in agr eement with the data over the entire range of experimentally tunable correlation coupling strengths. The reported findings represent a significant advance towardsunderstanding the nature and role of ion correlations in charged soft-matter. Ion distributio ns underlie many scientific phenomena and technological applications, including electrostatic interactions between charged biomolecules andthe efficiency of energy storage devices. These distributions are determined by interactions dictated by the chemica l properties of the ions and their environment, as well as the long-range nature of the electrostatic force. Thepresence of strong correlations between ions is responsible for counterintuitive effects such as like-charge attraction

Title:Brownian Dynamics at Boundaries and Interfaces [electronic resource] : In Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
Author(s): Zeev Schuss
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Brownian dynamics serve as mathematical models for the diffusive motion of microscopic particles of various shapes in gaseous, liquid, or solid environments. The renewed interest in Brownian dynamics is due primarily to their keyrole in molecular and cellular biophysics: diffusion of ions and molecules is the driver of all life. Brownian dynamics simulations are the numerical realizations of stochastic differential equations that model the functions ofbiological micro devices such as protein ionic ch annels of biological membranes, cardiac myocytes, neuronal synapses, and many more. Stochastic differential equations are ubiquitous models in computational physics, chemistry, biophysics, computer science, communications theory, mathematical finance theor y, and many other disciplines. Brownian dynamics simulations of the random motion of particles, be it molecules or stock prices, give rise to mathematicalproblems that neither the kinetic theory of Maxwell and Boltzmann, nor Einsteins and Langevins theori es of Brownian motion could predict. This book takes the readers on a journey that starts with the rigorous definition ofmathematical Brownian motion, and ends with the explicit solution of a series of complex problems that have immediate applications. It is aimed at applied mathematicians, physicists, theoretical chemists, and physiologists who areinterested in modeling, analysis, and simulation of micro devices of microbiology. The book contains exercises and worked out examples throughout

Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The Fundamentals of Atomic and Molecular Physics is intended as an introduction to the field for advanced undergraduates who have taken quantum mechanics. Each chapter builds upon the previous, using the same tools and methodsthroughout. As the stude nts progress through the book, their ability to use these tools will steadily increase, along with their confidence in their efficacy. The book treats the two-electron atom as the simplest example of themany-electron atomas opposed to using techniques tha t are not applicable to many-electron atomsso that it is unnecessary to develop additional equations when turning to multielectron atoms, such as carbon. External fields aretreated using both perturbation theory and direct diagonalization and spontaneous emission is developed from first principles. Only diatomic molecules are considered with the hydrogen molecular ion and neutral molecule treated in somedetail. This comprehensive coverage of the quantum mechanics of complex atoms and simple diatomic molec ules, developed from the very basic components, is extremely useful for students considering graduate studies in any area ofphysics

Note:Dihedral Fourier Analysis introduces the theory and applications necessary to study experimental data indexed by, or associated with, the points in a dihedral symmetry orbit. This book looks at experimental data and analyticalmodels indexed by certai n dihedral rotations and reversals realized as vector fields. Its particular relevance as a research tool in areas such as optical and molecular biology statisticsappears when formulated within the context ofsymmetry studies, which formally connects algeb raic and statistical reasoning together in one methodology for data summary and inference. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the theory and methods of dihedral analysis. It introduces datasets and examples defining and connecting the algebraic notions of symmetry with those of statistical summaries and inference. Chapter 2 includes the required algebraic aspects and data-analytic results. Chapters 3-6 offer applicationsof the methods presented in the text. This book is intended for data analysts of both t heoretical and applied statistics

Note:Complexity occurs in biological and synthetic systems alike. This general phenomenon has been addressed in recent publications by investigators in disciplines ranging from chemistry and biology to psychology and philosophy.Studies of complexity for m olecular scientists have focussed on breaking symmetry, dissipative processes, and emergence. Investigators in the social and medical sciences have focused on neurophenomenology, cognitive approaches andself-consciousness. Complexity in both structure and function is inherent in many scientific disciplines of current significance and also in technologies of current importance that are rapidly evolving to address global societalneeds. Several of these multifaceted scientific disciplines are addressed in th is book including complexity from the general and philosophical perspective, magnetic phenomena, control of self assembly and function in largemulticomponent clusters, application of theory to probe structure and mechanism in highly complex molecular spec ies, and the design of multifunctional nanoscale molecules of value in decontamination and solar fuels research. Eachchapter is both a review and addresses some ongoing challenges, thus each should provide a good preparation for further work in these high ly active areas of research endeavour.

Note:This book deals with all aspects of plasmonics, basics, applications and advanced developments. Plasmonics is an emerging field of research dedicated to the resonant interaction of light with metals. The light/matter interactionis strongly enhanced a t a nanometer scale which sparks a keen interest of a wide scientific community and offers promising applications in pharmacology, solar energy, nanocircuitry or also light sources. The major breakthroughs of thisfield of research originate from the recen t advances in nanotechnology, imaging and numerical modelling. The book is divided into three main parts: extended surface plasmons polaritons propagating on metallic surfaces, surfaceplasmons localized on metallic particles, imaging and nanofabrication t echniques. The reader will find in the book: Principles and recent advances of plasmonics, a complete description of the physics of surface plasmons, a historicalsurvey with emphasize on the emblematic topic of Wood's anomaly, an overview of modern applic ations of molecular plasmonics and an extensive description of imaging and fabrications techniques
