Note:This book provides a molecular view of membrane transport by means of numerous biochemical and biophysical techniques. The rapidly growing number of atomic structures of transporters in different conformations and the constantprogress in bioinformati cs have recently added deeper insights. The unifying mechanism of energized solute transport across membranes is assumed to consist of the conformational cycling of a carrier protein to provide access tosubstrate binding sites from either side of a cellu lar membrane. Due to the central role of active membrane transport there is considerable interest in deciphering the principles of one of the most fundamental processes in nature: thealternating access mechanism. This book brings together particularly si gnificant structure-function studies on a variety of carrier systems from different transporter families: Glutamate symporters, LeuT-like fold transporters, MFStransporters and SMR (RND) exporters, as well as ABC-type importers. The selected examples imp ressively demonstrate how the combination of functional analysis, crystallography, investigation of dynamics and computational studies hasmade it possible to create a conclusive picture, or, more precisely, a molecular movie. Note:This book introduces and reviews both theory and applications of polarizational bremsstrahlung, i.e. the electromagnetic radiation emitted during collisions of charged particles with structured, thus polarizable targets, such asatoms, molecules and c lusters. The subject, following the first experimental evidence a few decades ago, has gained importance through a number of modern applications. Thus, the study of several radiative mechanisms is expected tolead to the design of novel light sources, ope rating in various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Note:The application of molecules in technological devices hinges on the proper understanding of their behavior on metallic electrodes or substrates. The intrinsic molecular electronic and magnetic properties are modified at a metallicinterface, and great ly depend on the atomic configuration of the molecule-metal bond. This poses certain problems, such as the lack of reproducibility in the transport properties of molecular junctions, but also offers the possibilityto induce new charge and spin configurati ons that are only present at the interface. The results presented in this thesis address this issue, providing a comprehensive overview of the influence of molecule-metal and molecule-moleculeinteractions on the electronic and magnetic properties of molec ules adsorbed on metallic substrates. Using metal-phthalocyanines (MePc), a commonly used metal-organic complex as a model system, each chapter explores different aspectsof the interaction with silver surfaces: the local adsorption geometry, self-assembly , the modifications of the electronic and magnetic characteristics due to hybridization and charge transfer, and finally the manipulation of molecularcharge and spin states by electron doping using alkali atoms moved with the STM tip

Note:Theory of Nonlinear Propagation of High Harmonics Generated in a Gaseous Medium establishes the theoretical tools to study High-Order Harmonic Generation (HHG) by intense ultrafast infrared lasers inatoms and molecules. Themacroscopic propagation of both laser and high-harmonic fields is taken into account by solving Maxwell's wave equations, while the single-atom or single-molecule response is treated with a quantitative rescattering theory by solvingthe time-dependent Schrdinger equation. This book demonstrates for the first time that observed experimental HHG spectra of atoms and molecules can be accurately reproduced theoretically when precise experimental conditions areknown. The macroscopic HHG can be expressed as a product of a macroscopic wav e packet and a photorecombination cross section, where the former depends on laser and experimental conditions while the latter is the property of targetatoms or molecules. The factorization makes it possible to retrieve microscopically atomic or molecula r structure information from the measured macroscopic HHG spectra. This book also investigates other important issues about HHG, suchas contributions from multiple molecular orbitals, the minimum in the HHG spectrum, the spatial mode of laser beams, and t he generation of an isolated attosecond pulse. Additionally, this book presents the photoelectron angulardistribution of aligned molecules ionized by the HHG light

Note:The high temperatures generated in gases by shock waves give rise to physical and chemical phenomena such as molecular vibrational excitation, dissociation, ionization, chemical reactions and inherently related radiation. Incontinuum regime, these pr ocesses start from the wave front, so that generally the gaseous media behind shock waves may be in a thermodynamic and chemical non-equilibrium state. This book presents the state of knowledge of thesephenomena. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of high temperature gases, including the plasma state are described, as well as the kinetics of the various chemical phenomena cited above. Numerous results of measurement and computationof vibrational relaxation times, dissociation and reaction rate constants a re given, and various ionization and radiative mechanisms and processes are presented. The coupling between these different phenomena is taken into account aswell as their interaction with the flow-field. Particular points such as the case of rarefied flo ws and the inside of the shock wave itself are also examined. Examples of specific non-equilibrium flows are given, generallycorresponding to those encountered during spatial missions or in shock tube experiments

Note:Various kinds of masks obscure our view of our galaxy, the Milky Way, as well as of other galaxies. Masks of interstellar dust affect our measurements within galaxies, on scales ranging from individual supernovae to the galaxiesthemselves. The mass m ask (our inability to image mass rather than light) gives astronomers a very incomplete picture of the size and structure of galaxies themselves, because we cannot image the dark matter which provides mostof the galactic mass. Another mass is the dynamica l mask: as galaxies form, much dynamical information is lost in the birthing process. A new thrust in research is to retrieve such information by means of chemical tagging. About50 astronomers flew into Namibia in April 2010, to celebrate the 70th birthda y of Professor K.C. Freeman, Fellow of the Royal Society. At age 70, Freeman, a father of dark matter in galaxies, continues to be one of planets mosthighly cited astronomers. The current volume affords readers a unique perspective on galaxies by probing the thoughts of some of the greatest astronomers of our age. Contributions focus on galaxies from within our Local Group to thosein our high redshift Universe. Approximately 40 in-depth review and contributed papers are contained in the volume, each writt en by an expert in the field. Two unusual features of the current volume include the Star Country ofthe San people of southern Africa as well as the introduction into astronomy of The Treachery of Images by the Belgian surrealist artist Ren Magritte. The ASI merged the related disciplines of biophysics, biochemistry and molecular structure to treat, detect, and understand emerging infectious diseases. It addressedthe treatment and detection of bioterrorism agents, and focused on critical partner country priorities in bi otechnology, materials, drug discovery and the environment. It provided crossroads discussing new technologies in biophysicsand structural biology, their implications pathogen detection and treatment and their role in partner country development.
