Title:Chips 2020 [electronic resource] : A Guide to the Future of Nanoelectronics
Author(s): Bernd Hoefflinger
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The chips in present-day cell phones already contain billions of sub-100-nanometer transistors. By 2020, however, we will see systems-on-chips with trillions of 10-nanometer transistors. But this will be the end of theminiaturization, because yet sma ller transistors, containing just a few control atoms, are subject to statisticalfluctuations and thus no longer useful. We also need to worry about a potential energy crisis, because in less than fiveyears from now, with current chip technology, the inte rnet alone would consume the total global electrical power! This book presents a new, sustainable roadmap towards ultra-low-energy (femto-Joule), high-performance electronics. Thefocus is on the energy-efficiency of the various chip functions: sensing, pr ocessing, and communication, in a top-down spirit involving new architectures such as silicon brains, ultra-low-voltage circuits, energy harvesting, and 3Dsilicon technologies. Recognized world leaders from industry and from the research community share t heir views of this nanoelectronics future. They discuss, among other things, ubiquitous communication based on mobile companions, health and care supported by autonomous implants and by personal carebots, safe and efficient mobility assisted by co-pilots e quipped with intelligent micro-electromechanical systems, and internet-based education for a billionpeoplefrom kindergarden to retirement. This book should help and interest all those who will have to make decisions associated with future electronics: stu dents, graduates, educators, and researchers, as well as managers, investors, andpolicy makers. Title:Learning Spaces [electronic resource] : Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics
Author(s): Jean-Claude Falmagne
Jean-Paul Doignon
Date:2011
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Learning spaces offer a rigorous mathematical foundation for various practical systems of knowledge assessment. An example is offered by the ALEKS system (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces), a software for the assessmentof mathematical know ledge. From a mathematical standpoint, learning spaces as well as knowledge spaces (which made the title of the first edition) generalize partially ordered sets. They are investigated both from a combinatorial and astochastic viewpoint. The results are ap plied to real and simulated data. The book gives a systematic presentation of research and extends the results to new situations. It is of interest to mathematically oriented readers ineducation, computer science and combinatorics at research and graduate levels. The text contains numerous examples and exercises, and an extensive bibliography

Title:Intelligent Algorithms in Ambient and Biomedical Computing [electronic resource]
Author(s): Wim Verhaegh
Emile Aarts
Jan Korst
Date:2006
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The rapid growth in electronic systems in the past decade has boosted research in the area of computational intelligence. As it has become increasingly easy to generate, collect, transport, process, and store huge amounts of data, the role of intellig ent algorithms has become prominent in order to visualize, manipulate, retrieve, and interpret the data. For instance, intelligent search techniques have been developed to search for relevant items in hugecollections of web pages, and data mining and inte rpretation techniques play a very important role in making sense out of huge amounts of biomolecular measurements. As a result, the added value of many modern systems is no longerdetermined by hardware only, but increasingly by the intelligent software th at supports and facilitates the user in realizing his or her objectives. This book is the outcome of a series of discussions at the Philips Symposium onIntelligent Algorithms, which was held in Eindhoven in December 2004. It contains many exciting and pra ctical examples of the use of intelligent algorithms in the areas of ambient and biomedical computing. It contains topics such asbioscience computing, database design, machine consciousness, scheduling, video summarization, audio classification, semantic reasoning, machine learning, tracking & localization, secure computing, and communication
