We also demonstrate the inter-connection between these areas of nonlinear optics. Nonlinear optical properties of media such as optical limiting can be applied in various areas of science andtechnology. To define suitable materials for these applications, o ne has to carefully analyse the nonlinear optical characteristics of various media, such as the nonlinear refractive indices, coefficients of nonlinear absorption,saturation absorption intensities, etc. Knowing the nonlinear optical parameters of material s is also important for describing the propagation effects, self-interaction of intense laser pulses, and optimisation of various nonlinearoptical processes. Among those processes one can admit the importance of the studies of the frequency conversion of coherent laser sources. The area of interest for nonlinear optical characterization of materials is also closelyrelated with new field of nanostructures formation and application during laser-matter interaction. We show how the nonlinear optical analysis of materials leads to improvement of their high-order nonlinear optical response during theinteraction with strong laser fields. Ablation-induced nanoparticles formation is correlated with their applications as efficient sources of coherent short-waveleng th photons. From other side, recent achievements of harmonic generationin plasmas are closely related with the knowledge of the properties of materials in the laser plumes. All of these studies are concerned with the low-order nonlinear optical features o f various materials. The novelty of the approachdeveloped in present book is related with inter-connection of those studies with each other

Note:Substantial effort has been drawn for years onto the development of (possibly high-order) numerical techniques for the scalar homogeneous conservation law, an equation which is strongly dissipative in L1 thanks to shock waveformation. Such a dissipat ion property is generally lost when considering hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, or simply inhomogeneous scalar balance laws involving accretive or space-dependent source terms, because of complex waveinteractions. An overall weaker dissipation ca n reveal intrinsic numerical weaknesses through specific nonlinear mechanisms: Hugoniot curves being deformed by local averaging steps in Godunov-type schemes, low-order errors propagatingalong expanding characteristics after having hit a discontinuity, e xponential amplification of truncation errors in the presence of accretive source terms... This book aims at presenting rigorous derivations of different, sometimescalled well-balanced, numerical schemes which succeed in reconciling high accuracy with a s tronger robustness even in the aforementioned accretive contexts. It is divided into two parts: one dealing with hyperbolic systems of balancelaws, such as arising from quasi-one dimensional nozzle flow computations, multiphase WKB approximation of linear Schrdinger equations, or gravitational Navier-Stokes systems. Stability results for viscosity solutions ofonedimensional balance laws are sketched. The other being entirely devoted to the treatment of weakly nonlinear kinetic equations in the discrete or dinate approximation, such as the ones of radiative transfer, chemotaxis dynamics,semiconductor conduction, spray dynamics of linearized Boltzmann models. First, based on the concrete picture of afemtosecond laser beam whic h self-pinches its radial intensity distribution, the thesis delivers a novel explanation for the remarkable and previously unexplained phenomenon of pulse self-compression in filaments. Moreover, the workaddresses the impact of a non-adiabatic change of both nonlinearity and dispersion on such an intense femtosecond pulse transiting from a gaseous dielectric material to a solid one. Finally, and probably most importantly, the authorpresents a simple and highly practical theoretical approach for quantitat ively estimating the influence of higher-order nonlinear optical effects in optics. These results shed new light on recent experimental observations, which arestill hotly debated and may completely change our understanding of filamentation, causing a para digm change concerning the role of higher-order nonlinearities in optics

Note:This thesis describes the first demonstration of a cooperative optical non-linearity based on Rydberg excitation. Whereas in conventional non-linear optics the non-linearity arises directly from the interaction between light andmatter, in a cooperati ve process it is mediated by dipole-dipole interactions between light-induced excitations. For excitation to high Rydberg states where the electron is only weakly bound, the dipole-dipole interactions areextremely large and long range, enabling an enormou s enhancement of the non-linear effect. Consequently, cooperative non-linear optics using Rydberg excitations opens a new era for quantum optics enabling large single photonnon-linearity to be accessible in free space for the first time. The thesis descri bes the theoretical underpinnings of the non- linear effect, the pioneering experimental results and implications for experiments in the single photonregime

Note:Enhancement cavities are passive optical resonators in which continuous-wave laser radiation or pulses of a frequency comb are coherently overlapped, allowing for a power and intensity scaling of up to several orders of magnitude.A prominent applicat ion is the table-top generation of bright, laser-like radiation in spectral regions where direct laser action is inefficient or not available at all, via intracavity nonlinear optical processes. However, to exploitthe full capacity of this technique furth er progress is needed. This thesis covers central problems of enhancement cavities, such as finding limitations in scaling the circulating power, measuring cavity parameters with high accuracy,tailoring transverse modes and coupling out radiation generate d in the cavity. Unprecedented intracavity laser powers were demonstrated, surpassing previous results by an order of magnitude. As an application, harmonics of thefundamental 1040-nm radiation up to the 21st order are generated. Besides reporting these f ine experimental results, the thesis provides an excellent introduction into the physics of enhancement cavities, supported by more than 140references

Note:This thesis deals with the effects of time-delay in complex nonlinear systems and in particular with its applications in complex networks, and relates it to control theory and nonlinear optics. Delays arise naturally in networksof coupled systems due to finite signal propagation speeds and are thus a key issue in many areas of physics, biology, medicine, and technology. Synchronization phenomena in these networks play an important role, e.g., in the contextof learning, cognitive and pathological stat es in the brain, for secure communication with chaotic lasers or gene regulation. The work includes both novel results on the control of complex dynamics by time-delayed feedback and newfundamental insights into the interplay of delay and synchronization. One of the most interesting results here is a solution to the problem of complete synchronization in general networks with large coupling delay, i.e., largedistances between the nodes, by giving a universal classification of networks which has a wide ran ge of interdisciplinary applications

Note:Discrete periodic structures play an important role in physics, and have opened up an exciting new area of investigation in recent years. Questions relating to the control of light in such structures still represent a majorchallenge. It is this highl y active field that is adressed in the present thesis. Using the model system of a photorefractive nonlinearity that allows one to simultaneously create and control photonic lattices by light, the authorobtains a comprehensive picture of the control of no nlinear and quantum optics phenomena in photonic lattices. He describes and demonstrates experimentally for the first time resonant transitions in two-dimensional hexagonal lattices,including Rabi oscillations and Landau-Zener tunneling, as well as the di rect control and exploitation of these transitions. A particular highlight of this thesis is the study of soliton-cluster switching and control of Zenertunneling
