Title:Hiroshima to Fukushima [electronic resource] : Biohazards of Radiation
Author(s): Eiichiro Ochiai
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Set against a backdrop of the recent disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Hiroshima to Fukushima examines the issue of radiation safety. The author provides important and accurate scientific information about theradioactive substances arisi ng from nuclear power plants and weapons, including the effects of this radiation on living organisms. Currently, humankind is at a crossroads and must decide whether to phase out or increase its reliance onnuclear power as weapons and an energy source. A lthough a few countries, mostly European, have vowed to abolish nuclear power as an energy source, many other countries are about to increase their nuclear power programs. This book iswritten from a Japanese perspective and thus provides an alternative to views of Western writers. The author includes rigorous scientific analyses, however maintains a broad scope which allows the book to be accessible todecision-makers and non-specialists

Author(s): Anwar Kamal
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This textbook teaches particle physics very didactically. It supports learning and teaching with numerous worked examples, questions and problems with answers. Numerous tables and diagrams lead to a better understanding of theexplanations. The conten t of the book covers all important topics of particle physics: Elementary particles are classified from the point of view of the four fundamental interactions. The nomenclature used in particle physics isexplained. The discoveries and properties of known elementary particles and resonances are given. The particles considered are positrons, muon, pions, anti-protons, strange particles, neutrino and hadrons. The conservation lawsgoverning the interactions of elementary particles are given. The concepts of p arity, spin, charge conjugation, time reversal and gauge invariance are explained. The quark theory is introduced to explain the hadron structure and stronginteractions. The solar neutrino problem is considered. Weak interactions are classified into vario us types, and the selection rules are stated. Non-conservation of parity and the universality of the weak interactions are discussed.Neutral and charged currents, discovery of W and Z bosons and the early universe form important topics of the electroweak interactions. The principles of high energy accelerators including colliders are elaborately explained.Additionally, in the book detectors used in nuclear and particle physics are described. This book is on the upper undergraduate level

Title:Cylindrical Liner Z-pinches as Drivers for Converging Strong Shock Experiments [electronic resource]
Author(s): Guy C Burdiak
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The thesisdescribes the development of an entirely new experimental platform for generating and studying converging radiative shock waves. It was discovered that the application of large magnetic pressures to gas-filledcylindrical metallic tubes coul d sequentially produce three shocks within the gas. A comprehensive set of instrumentation was devised to explore this system in detail and an exceptionally thorough experimental and theoretical study wascarried out in order to understand the source of th e shock waves and their dynamics. The research is directed towards some of the most interesting topics in high energy density physics (HEDP) today, namely the interaction of HEDmaterial with radiation and magnetic fields, with broad applications to inertia l confinement fusion (ICF) and laboratory plasma astrophysics. The work has alreadygenerated significant international interest in these two distinctresearch areas andthe results could have significant importance for magnetic ICF concepts being explored a t Sandia National Laboratories in the US and for our understanding of the very strong shock waves that are ubiquitous inastrophysics

Title:Finite Volumes for Complex Applications VII-Elliptic, Parabolic and Hyperbolic Problems [electronic resource] : FVCA 7, Berlin, June 2014
Author(s): Jrgen Fuhrmann
Mario Ohlberger
Christian Rohde
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The methods considered in the 7th conference on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications (Berlin, June 2014) have properties which offer distinct advantages for a number of applications. The second volume of the proceedingscovers reviewed contribution s reporting successful applications in the fields of fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, structural analysis, nuclear physics, semiconductor theory and other topics. The finite volume method in its variousforms is a space discretization technique for pa rtial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods preserve further qualitative or asymptotic properties, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of free energy, and asymptotic stability. Due to these properties, finite volume methodsbelong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative prop erties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equationsbecomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. Researchers, PhD and masters level students i n numerical analysis, scientific computing and related fields such as partial differential equations will findthis volume useful, as will engineers working in numerical modeling and simulations

Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book presents a collection of texts by the German physicist and philosopher Carl Friedrich von Weizscker (1912-2007), for use in seminars on the history, epistemology and structure of physics. Most texts appear in Englishfor the first time. Weiz scker became famous through his works in physics, mainly in the early development of nuclear physics. Later he would also become well known as a philosopher and analyst of contemporary culture. Texts includethe original publications of the Weizscker-Bethe formula of nuclear masses and the Bethe-Weizscker cycle, which explains the source of energy in the sun both were developed by Bethe at the same time and independentlyof Weizscker. Further texts deal with Weizsckers explanation of the origin of planets, his explanation of the time arrow in Statistical Mechanics and his analyses of Quantum Mechanics and the structure of physics ingeneral

Title:Physics of Societal Issues [electronic resource] : Calculations on National Security, Environment, and Energy
Author(s): David Hafemeister
Date:2014
Edition:2nd ed. 2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book provides the reader with essential tools needed to analyze complex societal issues and demonstrates the transition from physics to modern-day laws and treaties. This second edition features new equation-orientedmaterial and extensive data s ets drawing upon current information from experts in their fields. Problems to challenge the reader and extend discussion are presented on three timely issues: National Security:Weapons, Offense, Defense, Verification, Nuclear Proliferation, Terrorism Environment: Air/Water, Nuclear, Climate Change, EM Fields/Epidemiology Energy: Current Energy Situation, Buildings, SolarBuildings, Renewable Energy, Enhanced End-Use Efficiency, Transportation, Economics Praise for the first edition: This insight is n eeded in Congress and the Executive Branch. Hafemeister, a former Congressional fellow with wideWashington experience, has written a book for physicists, chemists and engineers who want to learn science and policy on weapons, energy, and the environment. Scientists who want to make a difference will want this book. RichardScribner, first Director, Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow Program, AAAS Hafemeister shows how much one can understand about nuclear weapons and missile issues through simpl e back-of-the-envelope calculations. He alsoprovides compact explanations of the partially successful attempts that have been made over the past 60 years to control these weapons of mass destruction. Hopefully, Physics of Societal Issues will help interes t a new generation ofphysicists in continuing this work. Frank von Hippel, Professor, Princeton, former Assistant Director, National Security, White House, OSTP Energy policy must be quantitative. People who don't calculate economic tradeoffs oftenchampi on simplistic hardware. The solution is more... nuclear power, or electric cars, or photovoltaics, etc. Some simple physics will s

Title:Interacting Boson Model from Energy Density Functionals [electronic resource]
Author(s): Kosuke Nomura
Date:2013
Publisher:Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This thesis describes a novel and robust way of deriving a Hamiltonian of the interacting boson model based on microscopic nuclear energy density functional theory. Based on the fact that the multi-nucleon induced surfacedeformation of finite nucleus can be simulated by effective boson degrees of freedom, intrinsic properties of the nucleon system, obtained from self-consistent mean-field method with a microscopic energy density functional, are mappedonto the boson analog. Thereby, the excitation spe ctra and the transition rates for the relevant collective states having good symmetry quantum numbers are calculated by the subsequent diagonalization of the mapped boson Hamiltonian.Because the density functional approach gives an accurate global descrip tion of nuclear bulk properties, the interacting boson model is derived for various situations of nuclear shape phenomena, including those of the exotic nucleiinvestigated at rare-isotope beam facilities around the world. This work provides, for the first time, crucial pieces of information about how the interacting boson model is justified and derived from nucleon degrees of freedom in acomprehensive manner
