Title:Cylindrical Liner Z-pinches as Drivers for Converging Strong Shock Experiments [electronic resource]
Author(s): Guy C Burdiak
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The thesisdescribes the development of an entirely new experimental platform for generating and studying converging radiative shock waves. It was discovered that the application of large magnetic pressures to gas-filledcylindrical metallic tubes coul d sequentially produce three shocks within the gas. A comprehensive set of instrumentation was devised to explore this system in detail and an exceptionally thorough experimental and theoretical study wascarried out in order to understand the source of th e shock waves and their dynamics. The research is directed towards some of the most interesting topics in high energy density physics (HEDP) today, namely the interaction of HEDmaterial with radiation and magnetic fields, with broad applications to inertia l confinement fusion (ICF) and laboratory plasma astrophysics. The work has alreadygenerated significant international interest in these two distinctresearch areas andthe results could have significant importance for magnetic ICF concepts being explored a t Sandia National Laboratories in the US and for our understanding of the very strong shock waves that are ubiquitous inastrophysics

Author(s): Peter Sigmund
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book represents volume 2 of a 3-volume monograph on Particle Penetration and Radiation Effects. While volume 1 addressed the basic theory of scattering and stopping of swift point charges, i.e., protons, antiprotons and alphaparticles, the prese nt volume focuses on ions heavier than helium as well as molecules and clusters over an energy range from a few keV/u to a few hundred MeV/u. The book addressed the foundations in atomic-collision physics of a widevariety of application areas within mater ials and surface science and engineering, micro and nano science and technology, radiation medicine and biology as well as nuclear and particle physics. Problems have been added to all chapters. This should make the book useful for both self-study and adva nced university courses. An effort has been made to establish a unified notation throughout the monograph

Title:Physics of Societal Issues [electronic resource] : Calculations on National Security, Environment, and Energy
Author(s): David Hafemeister
Date:2014
Edition:2nd ed. 2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book provides the reader with essential tools needed to analyze complex societal issues and demonstrates the transition from physics to modern-day laws and treaties. This second edition features new equation-orientedmaterial and extensive data s ets drawing upon current information from experts in their fields. Problems to challenge the reader and extend discussion are presented on three timely issues: National Security:Weapons, Offense, Defense, Verification, Nuclear Proliferation, Terrorism Environment: Air/Water, Nuclear, Climate Change, EM Fields/Epidemiology Energy: Current Energy Situation, Buildings, SolarBuildings, Renewable Energy, Enhanced End-Use Efficiency, Transportation, Economics Praise for the first edition: This insight is n eeded in Congress and the Executive Branch. Hafemeister, a former Congressional fellow with wideWashington experience, has written a book for physicists, chemists and engineers who want to learn science and policy on weapons, energy, and the environment. Scientists who want to make a difference will want this book. RichardScribner, first Director, Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow Program, AAAS Hafemeister shows how much one can understand about nuclear weapons and missile issues through simpl e back-of-the-envelope calculations. He alsoprovides compact explanations of the partially successful attempts that have been made over the past 60 years to control these weapons of mass destruction. Hopefully, Physics of Societal Issues will help interes t a new generation ofphysicists in continuing this work. Frank von Hippel, Professor, Princeton, former Assistant Director, National Security, White House, OSTP Energy policy must be quantitative. People who don't calculate economic tradeoffs oftenchampi on simplistic hardware. The solution is more... nuclear power, or electric cars, or photovoltaics, etc. Some simple physics will s

Title:Principles of Astrophysics [electronic resource] : Using Gravity and Stellar Physics to Explore the Cosmos
Author(s): Charles Keeton
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book gives a survey of astrophysics at the advanced undergraduate level. It originates from a two-semester course sequence at Rutgers University that is meant to appeal not only to astrophysics students but also morebroadly to physics and engine ering students. The organization is driven more by physics than by astronomy in other words, topics are first developed in physics and then applied to astronomical systems that can be investigated, rather than the other way around. The first half of the bo ok focuses on gravity. Gravity is the dominant force in many astronomical systems, so a tremendous amount can be learned by studying gravity, motion and mass. The theme inthis part of the book, as well as throughout astrophysics, is using motion to invest igate mass. The goal of Chapters 2-11 is to develop a progressively richer understanding of gravity as it applies to objects ranging from planets andmoons to galaxies and the universe as a whole. The second half uses other aspects of physics to address on e of the big questions. While Why are we here? lies beyond the realm of physics, a closely related question is withinour reach: How did we get here? The goal of Chapters 12-21 is to understand the physics behind the remarkable story of how the Universe, E arth and life were formed. This book assumes familiarity with vector calculus andintroductory physics (mechanics, electromagnetism, gas physics and atomic physics) however, all of the physics topics are reviewed as they come up (and vital aspects of vecto r calculus are reviewed in the Appendix). Note:Acomprehensive overview of all types of phantoms used in medical imaging, therapy, nuclear medicine and health physics is provided in this title. For ionizing radiation, dosimetry with respect to issues of material composition, shape, and motion/posit ion effects are all highlighted. For medical imaging, each type of technology will need specific materials and designs, and the physics and indications will be explored for each type. Health physics phantoms areconcerned with some of the same issues such as material heterogeneity, but also unique issues such as organ-specific radiation dose from sources distributed in other organs. Though some of the information enclosed is found in othersources, divided especially along the three categories of imaging, t herapy, and health physics, many medical physicists as well as professionals need to bridge these three catagories. Readers will be able to use this book to select theappropriate phantom from a vendor at a clinic, to learn from as a student, to choose mat erials for custom phantom design, to design dynamic features, and as a reference for a variety of applications

Note:In recent years, the fabrication of nanomaterials and exploration of their properties have attracted the attention of various scientific disciplines such as biology, physics, chemistry, and engineering. Although nanoparticulatesystems are of signific ant interest in various scientific and technological areas, there is little known about the safety of these nanoscale objects. It has now been established that the surfaces of nanoparticles are immediatelycovered by biomolecules (e.g. proteins, ions, and enzymes) upon their entrance into a biological medium. This interaction with the biological medium modulates the surface of the nanoparticles, conferring a biological identity totheir surfaces (referred to as a corona), which determines the subsequent cel lular/tissue responses. The new interface between the nanoparticles and the biological medium/proteins, called bio-nano interface, has been veryrarely studied in detail to date, though the interest in this topic is rapidly growing. In this book, the impor tance of the physiochemical characteristics of nanoparticles for the properties of the protein corona is discussed indetail, followed by comprehensive descriptions of the methods for assessing the protein-nanoparticle interactions. The advantages and limi tations of available corona evaluation methods (e.g. spectroscopy methods, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, and differential centrifugal sedimentation) are examined in detail, followed by a discussi on of the possibilities for enhancing the current methods and a call fornew techniques. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of protein-nanoparticle interaction phenomena are explored and discussed, with a focus on the biological impacts

Note:It has been widely recognized nowadays the importance of introducing mathematical models that take into account possible sudden changes in the dynamical behavior of high-integrity systems or a safety-critical system. Suchsystems can be found in aircr aft control, nuclear power stations, robotic manipulator systems, integrated communication networks and large-scale flexible structures for space stations, and are inherently vulnerable to abrupt changes intheir structures caused by component or interconn ection failures. In this regard, a particularly interesting class of models is the so-called Markov jump linear systems (MJLS), which have been used in numerous applications includingrobotics, economics and wireless communication. Combining probability an d operator theory, the present volume provides a unified and rigorous treatment of recent results in control theory of continuous-time MJLS. This unique approachis of great interest to experts working in the field of linear systems with Markovian jump par ameters or in stochastic control. The volume focuses on one of the few cases of stochastic control problems with an actual explicit solutionand offers material well-suited to coursework, introducing students to an interesting and active research area. The book is addressed to researchers working in control and signal processing engineering. Prerequisites include a solidbackground in classical linear control theory, basic familiarity with continuous-time Markov chains and probability theory, and some eleme ntary knowledge of operator theory

Title:Quantum Physics in the Nanoworld [electronic resource] : Schrdinger's Cat and the Dwarfs
Author(s): Hans Lth
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The book deals with all essential aspects of non-relativistic quantum physics up to the quantization of fields. In contrast to common textbooks of quantum mechanics, modern experiments are described both for the purpose offoundation of the theory and in relation to recent applications. In this respect applications to nano-electronics as well as the realization of quantum-bits are presented and discussed. Furthermore, links are made to other importantresearch fields and applications, such as elementar y particle physics, solid state physics and nuclear magnetic resonance tomography in medicine. Even though the representation of the topics is largely performed in terms of Diracsbra-ket notation and by use of commutator algebra, the concrete description of the physical basis and the corresponding theoretical concepts are emphasized. Because of little requirement of complex mathematics, the book is suitable asan introduction into quantum physics, not only for physicists but also for chemists, biologists, engineers, computer scientists and even for philosophers as far as they are interested in natural philosophy and epistomology

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Biomedical imaging is a relatively young discipline that started with Conrad Wilhelm Roentgens discovery of the x-ray in 1895. X-ray imaging was rapidly adopted in hospitals around the world. However, it was the advent ofcomputerized data and image p rocessing that made revolutionary new imaging modalities possible. Today, cross-sections and three-dimensional reconstructions of the organs inside the human body is possible with unprecedented speed, detail and quality. This book provides an introduction into the principles of image formation of key medical imaging modalities: X-ray projection imaging, x-ray computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound imaging, andradionuclide imaging. Recent developments in optical imaging are also covered . For each imaging modality, the introduction into the physical principles and sources of contrast is provided, followed by the methods of image formation, engineering aspects of the imaging devices, and a discussion of strengths and limitations of the mod ality. With this book, the reader gains a broad foundation of understanding and knowledge how todays medical imaging devicesoperate. In addition, the chapters in this book can serve as an entry point for the in-depth study of individual modalities by prov iding the essential basics of each modality in a comprehensive and easy-to-understand manner. As such, this book is equally attractive as a textbook for undergraduate or graduate biomedical imaging classes and as a reference and self-study guide for more s pecialized in-depth studies

Title:Intracellular Signaling Mediators in the Circulatory and Ventilatory Systems [electronic resource]
Author(s): Marc Thiriet
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The volumes in this authoritative series present a multidisciplinary approach to modeling and simulation of flows in the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems, especially multiscale modeling and coupled simulations. Thecardiovascular and respiratory systems are tightly coupled, as their primary function is to supply oxygen to and remove carbon dioxide from the body's cells. Because physiological conduits have deformable and reactive walls, macroscopic flow behavior and prediction must be coupled to p henomenological models of nano- and microscopic events in a corrector scheme of regulated mechanisms when the vessel lumen caliber varies markedly. Therefore, investigationof flows of blood and air in physiological conduits requires an understanding of th e biology, chemistry, and physics of these systems together with the mathematical tools to describe their functioning. Volume 4 is devoted to major setsof intracellular mediators that transmit signals upon stimulation of cell-surface receptors. Activation of signaling effectors triggers the release of substances stored in cellular organelles and/or gene transcription and proteinsynthesis. Complex stages of cell signaling can be studied using proper mathematical models, once the role of each component is c arefully handled. Volume 4 also reviews various categories of cytosolic and/or nuclear mediators andillustrates some major signal transduction pathways, such as NFkappaB axis, oxygen sensing, and mechanotransduction. Reviews signaling pathways in the regu lation of circulatory and respiratory function Describes ion and molecularcarriers and receptors Integrates biology, chemistry, and physics for a multidisciplinary understanding of physiological flows

Note:The proceedings represent the state of knowledge in the area of algorithmic differentiation (AD). The 31 contributed papers presented at the AD2012 conference cover the application of AD to many areas in science and engineeringas well as aspects of A D theory and its implementation in tools. For all papers the referees, selected from the program committee and the greater community, as well as the editors have emphasized accessibility of the presented ideasalso to non-AD experts. In the AD tools arena new implementations are introduced covering, for example, Java and graphical modeling environments or join the set of existing tools for Fortran. New developments in AD algorithms targetthe efficiency of matrix-operation derivatives, detection and exploit ation of sparsity, partial separability, the treatment of nonsmooth functions, and other high-level mathematical aspects of the numerical computations to bedifferentiated. Applications stem from the Earth sciences, nuclear engineering, fluid dynamics, and chemistry, to name just a few. In many cases the applications in a given area of science or engineering share characteristics thatrequire specific approaches to enable AD capabilities or provide an opportunity for efficiency gains in the derivative compu tation. The description of these characteristics and of the techniques for successfully using AD should makethe proceedings a valuable source of information for users of AD tools

Title:Optimization for Industrial Problems [electronic resource]
Author(s): Patrick Bangert
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Industrial optimization lies on the crossroads between mathematics, computer science, engineering and management. This book presents these fields as a conversation between the theory of mathematics and computer science and casestudies demonstrating e ngineering and management. Most of all, the case studies illustrate what may reasonably be expected from an optimization project in a commercial enterprise. While many other books treat some of the aspects ofthis book, it is practical and may be used as a manual for conducting an optimization project. This book will not make its reader into a mathematician but it will help him to improve his plant. The book requires no mathematical ortechnical background beyond a good high school training all else is addr essed within. It is aimed at managers or engineers of industrial facilities and is also suitable for university students and their professors as an illustrationof how academic material may be used in real life. The book includes 19 case studies that were conducted in real plants. Krzysztof Pomorski
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book brings together various aspects of the nuclear fission phenomenon discovered by Hahn, Strassmann and Meitner almost 70 years ago. Beginning with an historical introduction the authors present various models to describethe fission process of hot nuclei as well as the spontaneous fission of cold nuclei and their isomers. The role of transport coefficients, like inertia and friction in fission dynamics is discussed. The effect of the nuclear shellstructure on the fission probability and the ma ss and kinetic energy distributions of the fission fragments is presented. The fusion-fission process leading to the synthesis of new isotopes including super-heavy elements is described. The book will thus be useful for theoretical and experimental physic ists, as well as for graduate and PhD students

Title:Advanced Quantum Mechanics [electronic resource] : Materials and Photons
Author(s): Rainer Dick
Date:2012
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Advanced Quantum Mechanics: Materials and Photons is a textbook which emphasizes the importance of advanced quantum mechanics for materials science and all experimental techniques which employ photon absorption, emission, orscattering. Important aspe cts of introductory quantum mechanics are covered in the first seven chapters to make the subject self-contained and accessible for a wide audience. The textbook can therefore be used for advancedundergraduate courses and introductory graduate courses whi ch are targeted towards students with diverse academic backgrounds from the Natural Sciences or Engineering. To enhance this inclusive aspect of making the subject asaccessible as possible, Appendices A and B also provide introductions to Lagrangian mecha nics and the covariant formulation of electrodynamics. Other special features include an introduction to Lagrangian field theory and an integrateddiscussion of transition amplitudes with discrete or continuous initial or final states. Once students have a cquired an understanding of basic quantum mechanics and classical field theory, canonical field quantization is easy.Furthermore, the integrated discussion of transition amplitudes naturally leads to the notions of transition probabilities, decay rates, a bsorption cross sections and scattering cross sections, which are important for all experimentaltechniques that use photon probes. Quantization is first discussed for the Schrdinger field before the relativistic Maxwell, Klein-Gordon and Dirac fields are quantized. Quantized Schrdinger field theory is not only important forcondensed matter physics and materials science, but also provides the easiest avenue to general field quantization and is therefore also useful for students with an interest in nuclear and particle physics. The quantization of theMaxwell field is performed in Coulomb gauge. This is the appropriate and practically most useful quantization procedure in condensed matter physics, chem

Title:Thermodynamics of Fluids Under Flow [electronic resource] : Second Edition
Author(s): David Jou
Jos Casas-Vzquez
Manuel Criado-Sancho
Date:2011
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This is the second edition of the book Thermodynamics of Fluids under Flow, which was published in 2000 and has now been corrected, expanded and updated. This is a companion book to our other title Extended irreversiblethermodynamics (D. Jou, J. Casa s-Vzquez and G. Lebon, Springer, 4th edition 2010), and of the textbook Understanding non-equilibrium thermodynamics (G. Lebon, D. Jou and J. Casas-Vzquez, Springer, 2008. The present book is morespecialized than its counterpart, as it focuses its attenti on on the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of flowing fluids, incorporating non-trivial thermodynamic contributions of the flow, going beyond local equilibrium theories, i.e.,including the effects of internal variables and of external forcing due to the flo w. Whereas the book's first edition was much more focused on polymer solutions, with brief glimpses into ideal and real gases, the present edition coversa much wider variety of systems, such as: diluted and concentrated polymer solutions, polymer blends, laminar and turbulent superfluids, phonon hydrodynamics and heat transport in nanosystems, nuclear collisions, far-from-equilibriumideal gases, and molecular solutions. It also deals with a variety of situations, emphasizing the non-equilibrium flow contri bution: temperature and entropy in flowing ideal gases, shear-induced effects on phase transitions in realgases and on polymer solutions, stress-induced migration and its application to flow chromatography, Taylor dispersion, anomalous diffusion in flowin g systems, the influence of the flow on chemical reactions, and polymer degradation. The new edition is not only broader in scope, but more educational in character, and with more emphasis on applications, in keeping with our times. It provides many exampl es of how a deeper theoretical understanding may bring new andmore efficient applications, forging links between theoretical progress and practical aims. This updated version expands on the
