Note:The physics of strongly interacting matter in an external magnetic field is presently emerging as a topic of great cross-disciplinary interest for particle, nuclear, astro- and condensed matter physicists. It is known that strongmagnetic fields are c reated in heavy ion collisions, an insight that has made it possible to study a variety of surprising and intriguing phenomena that emerge from the interplay of quantum anomalies, the topology of non-Abelian gaugefields, and the magnetic field. In particu lar, the non-trivial topological configurations of the gluon field induce a non-dissipative electric current in the presence of a magnetic field. These phenomena have led to an extendedformulation of relativistic hydrodynamics, called chiral magnetohydrod ynamics. Hitherto unexpected applications in condensed matter physics include graphene and topological insulators. Other fields of application includeastrophysics, where strong magnetic fields exist in magnetars and pulsars. Last but not least, an import ant new theoretical tool that will be revisited and which made much of the progress surveyed in this book possible is theholographic principle - the correspondence between quantum field theory and gravity in extra dimensions. Note:High-energy astrophysics has unveiled a Universe very different from that only known from optical observations. It has revealed many types of objects in which typical variability timescales are as short as years, months, days, andhours (in quasars, X -ray binaries, and other objects), and even down to milli-seconds in gamma ray bursts. The sources of energy that are encountered are only very seldom nuclear fusion, and most of the time gravitation, a paradox whenone thinks that gravitation is, by many orders of magnitude, the weakest of the fundamental interactions. The understanding of these objects' physical conditions and the processes revealed by high-energy astrophysics in the lastdecades is nowadays part of astrophysicists' culture, even of those active in other domains of astronomy. This book evolved from lectures given to master and PhD students at the University of Geneva since the early 1990s. It aims atproviding astronomers and physicists intending to be active in high-energy astrophysics a broad basis on which they should be able to build the more specific knowledge they will need. While in the first part of the book the physicalprocesses are described and derived in detail, the second part studies astrophysical objects in which high-energy astrophysics plays a crucial role. This two-pronged approach will help students recognise physical processes by theirobservational signatures in contexts that may differ widely from those presented here

Note:The book is an expanded autobiography of the famous theoretical physicist Isaak Khalatnikov. He worked together with L.D. Landau at the Institute for Physical Problems lead by P.L. Kapitza. He is the co-author of L.D. Landau in anumber of important w orks. They worked together in the frame of the so-called Nuclear Bomb Project. After the death of L.D. Landau, I.M. Khalatnikov initiated the establishment of the Institute for Theoretical Physics, named in honourof L.D. Landau, within the USSR Academy of Sciences. The institute inherited almost all traditions of the Landau scientific school and played a prominent role in thedevelopment of theoretical physics. It is an histori cally interesting book on the development of Soviet and Russian science and presents the background of the Soviet nuclear bomb programin the cold war age.
