Note:This thesis deals with the problem of ion confinement in thermonuclear fusion devices. It is a topic of general interest, as it helps to understand via numerical simulations the ion confinement properties in complex geometries,in order to predict the ir behavior and maximize the performance of future fusion reactors. The main work carried out in this thesis is the improvement and exploitation of an existing simulation code called ISDEP. This code solves theso-called ion collisional transport in arbitr ary plasma geometry, improving in this sense other existing codes. Additionally, it presents outstanding portability and scalability in distributed computing architectures, such as Grid orVolunteer Computing. The main physical results can be divided into two blocks. First, the study of 3D ion transport in ITER is presented. ITER is the largest fusion reactor (under construction) and most of the simulations so far assumethe axis-symmetry of the device. Unfortunately, this symmetry is only an approximation because of the discrete number of magnetic coils used. ISDEP has shown, using a simple model of the 3D magnetic field, how the ion confinement isaffected by this symmetry breaking. Secondly, ISDEP has been applied successfully to the study of fast ion dyn amics in fusion plasmas. The fast ions, with energies much larger than the thermal energy, are a product of the devicesheating system. Thus, a numerical predictive tool can be used to improve the heating efficiency. ISDEP has been combined with the FAFNER 2 code to study such ions in stellarator (TJ-II, LHD) and tokamak (ITER) geometries. It has alsobeen validated by experimental results. In particular, comparisons with the CNPA diagnostic in the TJ-II stellarator are remarkable

This book systematically investigates the stability of linear as well as nonlinear vector differential equations with delay and equations with causalmappings. Cobalt Blues describes the development of the first cobalt-60 unit in the United States and the man behind it, LeonardGrimmett. Conceptuall y conceived before World War II, it only became possible because of the development of nuclear reactors during the war. Although Grimmett conceived of and published his ideas first, the Canadians built the firstunits because of the capability of their rea ctor to produce more suitable cobalt-60 sources. This book tells the story of how Grimmett and others came together at the time that the U S Atomic Energy Agency was pushing the use ofradioactivity in medicine. Due to his sudden death, very little informa tion about Grimmett was known until recently, when various documents have come to light, allowing the full story to be told

Note:Global warming, shortage of low-cost oil resources and the increasing demand for energy are currently controlling the world's economic expansion while often opposing desires for sustainable and peaceful development. In thiscontext, atomic energy sati sfactorily fulfills the criteria of low carbon gas production and high overall yield. However, in the absence of industrial fast-breeders the use of nuclear fuel is not optimal, and the production of highactivity waste materials is at a maximum. These are the principal reasons for the development of a new, fourth generation of nuclear reactors, minimizing the undesirable side-effects of current nuclear energy production technologywhile increasing yields by increasing operation temperatures and opening the way for the industrial production of hydrogen through the decomposition of water. The construction and use of such reactors is hindered by several factors,including performance limitations of known structural materials, particularly if the life of the pr ojected systems had to extend over the periods necessary to achieve low costs (at least 60 years). This book collects lectures andseminars presented at the homonymous NATO ASI held in autumn 2007 at the Institut dEtudes Scientifiques in Cargse, France. Th e adopted approach aims at improving and coordinating basic knowledge in materials science andengineering with specific areas of condensed matter physics, the physics of particle/matter interaction and of radiation damage. It is our belief that this metho dology is crucially conditioning the development and the industrialproduction of new structural materials capable of coping with the requirements of these future reactors
