Note: | Algorithms in algebraic geometry go hand in hand with software packages that implement them. Together they have established the modern field of computational algebraic geometry which has come to play a major role in boththeoretical advances and appli cations. Over the past fifteen years, several excellent general purpose packages for computations in algebraic geometry have been developed, such as, CoCoA, Singular and Macaulay 2. While these packagesevolve continuously, incorporating new mathematical a dvances, they both motivate and demand the creation of new mathematics and smarter algorithms. This volume reflects the workshop Software for Algebraic Geometry held in the weekfrom 23 to 27 October 2006, as the second workshop in the thematic year on App lications of Algebraic Geometry at the IMA. The papers in this volume describe the software packages Bertini, PHClab, Gfan, DEMiCs, SYNAPS, TrIm, Gambit,ApaTools, and the application of Risa/Asir to a conjecture on multiple zeta values. They offer the rea der a broad view of current trends in computational algebraic geometry through software development and applications |

Note: | The growing demand of speed, accuracy, and reliability in scientific and engineering computing has been accelerating the merging of symbolic and numeric computations, two types of computation coexisting in mathematics yetseparated in traditional rese arch of mathematical computation. This book with 23 chapters presents original research and tutorial survey on the integration and interaction of symbolic and numeric computations. It represents the currentstate of the art and will serve as a valuable ref erence on the development of algorithms and software packages for hybrid symbolic-numeric computation. The book highlights the interaction between symbolic and numeric computations. Itcontains tutorial surveys by distinguished experts, covers recent advan ces on key topics, and provides effective methods illustrated with applications |

Note: | Mathematica for Theoretical Physics: Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, General Relativity, and Fractals This second edition of Baumann's Mathematica in Theoretical Physics shows readers how to solve physical problems and dealwith their underlying t heoretical concepts while using Mathematica to derive numeric and symbolic solutions. Each example and calculation can be evaluated by the reader, and the reader can change the example calculations and adoptthe given code to related or similar problems. T he second edition has been completely revised and expanded into two volumes: The first volume covers classical mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. Both topics are the basis of a regularmechanics course. The second volume covers electrodynamics, quantum mech anics, relativity, and fractals and fractional calculus. New examples have been added and the representation has been reworked to provide a more interactiveproblem-solving presentation. This book can be used as a textbook or as a reference work, by studen ts and researchers alike. A brief glossary of terms and functions is contained in the appendices. The examples given in the text canalso be interactively used and changed for the readers purposes. The Author, Gerd Baumann, is affiliated with the Mathemati cal Physics Division of the University of Ulm, Germany, where he is professor. He is the author of SymmetryAnalysis of Differential Equations with Mathematica. Dr. Baumann has given numerous invited talks at universities and industry alike. He regularly h osts seminars and lectures on symbolic computing at the University of Ulm and atTECHNISCHE UNIVERSITT MNCHEN (TUM), Munich |
