Title: | A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Hans Petter Langtangen |
Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 4th ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The book serves as a first introduction to computer programming of scientific applications, using the high-level Python language. The exposition is example and problem-oriented, where the applications are taken from mathematics, numerical calculus, st atistics, physics, biology and finance. The book teaches Matlab-style and procedural programming as well as object-oriented programming. High school mathematics is a required background and it is advantageousto study classical and numerical one-variable c alculus in parallel with reading this book. Besides learning how to program computers, the reader will also learn how to solve mathematical problems, arising in various branches of scienceand engineering, with the aid of numerical methods and programming. By blending programming, mathematics and scientific applications, the book lays a solid foundation for practicing computational science. From the reviews: Langtangen does an excellent job of introducing programming as a set of skills in problem solving. He guides the reader into thinking properly about producing program logic and data structures for modeling real-world problems using objectsand functions and embracing the object-oriented paradigm. Summing Up: Highly recommended. F. H. Wild III, Choice, Vol. 47 (8), April 2010 Those of us who have learned scientific programming in Python on the streets could be alittle jealous of students who have the opportunity to take a course out of Langtangens Primer. John D. Cook, The Mathematical Association of Am erica, September 2011 This book goes through Python in particular, and programmingin general, via tasks that scientists will likely perform. It contains valuable informationfor students new to scientific computing and would be the perfect bridge between a n introduction to programming and an advanced course onnumerical methods or computational science. Title: | Neural Fields [electronic resource] : Theory and Applications |
Author(s): |
Stephen Coombes Peter beim Graben Roland Potthast James Wright |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | With this book, the editors present the first comprehensive collection in neural field studies, authored by leading scientists in the field - among them are two of the founding-fathers of neural field theory. Up to now, researchresults in the field h ave been disseminated across a number of distinct journals from mathematics, computational neuroscience, biophysics, cognitive science and others. Starting with a tutorial for novices in neural field studies, thebook comprises chapters on emergent pattern s, their phase transitions and evolution, on stochastic approaches, cortical development, cognition, robotics and computation, large-scale numerical simulations, the coupling of neural fieldsto the electroencephalogram and phase transitions in anesthesia. The intended readership are students and scientists in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, theoretical biology, and computational neuroscience. Neural field theoryand its applications have a long-standing tradition in the mathematical and computati onal neurosciences. Beginning almost 50 years ago with seminal work by Griffiths and culminating in the 1970ties with the models of Wilson and Cowan,Nunez and Amari, this important research area experienced a renaissance during the 1990ties by the groups of Ermentrout, Bressloff, Haken, and Wright. Since then, much progress has been made in both, the development of mathematical andnumerical techniques, and in physiological refinement and understanding. In contrast to large-scale neural network models desc ribed by huge connectivity matrices that are computationally expensive in numerical simulations, neural fieldmodels described by connectivity kernels allow for analytical treatment by means of functional analysis methods. Thus, a number of rigorous result s on the existence of bump and wave solutions or on inverse kernel construction problemsare nowadays available. Moreover, neural fields provide an important interface for the coupling of continuous neur |

Title: | Spectral Methods for Non-Standard Eigenvalue Problems [electronic resource] : Fluid and Structural Mechanics and Beyond |
Author(s): |
Clin-Ioan Gheorghiu |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book focuses on the constructive and practical aspects of spectral methods. It rigorously examines the most important qualities as well as drawbacks of spectral methods in the context of numerical methods devoted to solvenon-standard eigenvalue problems. In addition, the book also considers some nonlinear singularly perturbed boundary value problems along with eigenproblems obtained by their linearization around constant solutions. The book ismathematical, poising problems in their proper functi on spaces, but its emphasis is on algorithms and practical difficulties. The range of applications is quite large. High order eigenvalue problems are frequently beset with numericalill conditioning problems. The book describes a wide variety of successful modifications to standard algorithms that greatly mitigate these problems. In addition, the book makes heavy use of the concept of pseudospectrum, which ishighly relevant to understanding when disaster is imminent in solving eigenvalue problems. It also envisions two classes of applications, the stability of some elastic structures and the hydrodynamic stability of some parallel shearflows. This book is an ideal reference text for professionals (researchers) in applied mathematics, computational physics and engineering. It will be very useful to numerically sophisticated engineers, physicists and chemists. The bookcan also be used as a textbook in review courses such as numerical analysis, computational methods in various engineering branches or physics and computational methods in analysis |

Title: | Basic Concepts in Computational Physics [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Benjamin A. Stickler Ewald Schachinger |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | With the development of ever more powerful computers a new branch of physics and engineering evolved over the last few decades: Computer Simulation or Computational Physics. It serves two main purposes: - Solution of complexmathematical problems such as, differential equations, minimization/optimization, or high-dimensional sums/integrals. - Direct simulation of physical processes, as for instance, molecular dynamics or Monte-Carlo simulation ofphysical/chemical/technical processes. Consequently, the book is divided into two main parts: Deterministic methods and stochastic methods. Based on concrete problems, the first part discusses numerical differentiation and integration, and the treatment of ordinary differential equations. This is augmented by n otes on the numerics of partial differential equations. The second part discusses the generation of random numbers, summarizes the basics of stochastics whichis then followed by the introduction of various Monte-Carlo (MC) methods. Specific emphasis is on MARKOV chain MC algorithms. All this is again augmented by numerous applications from physics. The final two chapters on Data Analysisand Stochastic Optimization share the two main topics as a common denominator. The book offers a number of appendices to provide the reader with more detailed information on various topics discussed in the main part. Nevertheless, thereader should be familiar with the most important concepts of statistics and probability theory albeit two appendices have been dedicated to provide a rudimentary discussion |

Title: | Progress in Turbulence V [electronic resource] : Proceedings of the iTi Conference in Turbulence 2012 |
Author(s): |
Alessandro Talamelli Martin Oberlack Joachim Peinke |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This volume collects the edited and reviewed contributions presented in the 5th iTi Conference in Bertinoro. covering fundamental aspects in turbulent flows. In the spirit of the iTi initiative, the volume is produced after theconference so that the authors had the possibility to incorporate comments and discussions raised during the meeting. Turbulence presents a large number of aspects and problems, which are still unsolved and which challenge researchcommunities in engineering and physical scienc es both in basic and applied research. The book presents recent advances in theory related to new statistical approaches, effect of non-linearities and presence of symmetries. This editionpresents new contributions related to the physics and control of la minar-turbulent transition in wall-bounded flows, which may have a significant impact on drag reduction applications. Turbulent boundary layers, at increasing Reynoldsnumber, are the main subject of both computational and experimental long research progra ms aimed at improving our knowledge on scaling, energy distribution at different scales, structure eduction, roughness effects to name only a few.Like previous editions several numerical and experimental analysis of complex flows, mostly related to applic ations, are presented. The structure of the present book is as such that contributions have been bundled according to coveringtopics i.e. I Theory, II Stability, III Wall bounded flows, IV, Complex flows, V Acoustic, VI Numerical methods. The volume is de dicated to the memory of Prof. Rudolf Friedrich who prematurely died in Mnster/Germany on the 16th ofAugust 2012. In his honor the conference has started with a special session dedicated to his work. |

Author(s): |
Claudia Del P Lagos |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This thesis addresses two of the central processes which underpin the formation of galaxies: the formation of stars and the injection of energy into the interstellar medium from supernovae, called feedback. In her work ClaudiaLagos has completely ove rhauled the treatment of these processes in simulations of galaxy formation. Her thesis makes two major breakthroughs, and represents the first major steps forward in these areas in more than a decade. Her workhas enabled, for the first time, predictions to be made which can be compared against new observations which probe the neutral gas content of galaxies, opening up a completely novel way to constrain the models. The treatment offeedback from supernovae, and how this removes material from the interste llar medium, is also likely to have a lasting impact on the field. Claudia Lagos Ph.D. thesis was nominated by the Institute for Computational Cosmology at DurhamUniversity as an outstanding Ph.D. thesis 2012 |

Calin Vamos Maria Craciun |
Date: | 2013 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Our book introduces a method to evaluate the accuracy of trend estimation algorithms under conditions similar to those encountered in real time series processing. This method is based on Monte Carlo experiments with artificialtime series numerically generated by an original algorithm. The second part of the book contains several automatic algorithms for trend estimation and time series partitioning. The source codes of the computer programs implementingthese original automatic algorithms are given in the appendix and will be freely available on the web. The book contains clear statement of the conditions and the approximations under which the algorithms work, as well as the properinterpretation of their results. We illustrate the functioning of the a nalyzed algorithms by processing time series from astrophysics, finance, biophysics, and paleoclimatology. The numerical experiment method extensively used in ourbook is already in common use in computational and statistical physics |
