Note:This volume collects the edited and reviewed contributions presented in the 5th iTi Conference in Bertinoro. covering fundamental aspects in turbulent flows. In the spirit of the iTi initiative, the volume is produced after theconference so that the authors had the possibility to incorporate comments and discussions raised during the meeting. Turbulence presents a large number of aspects and problems, which are still unsolved and which challenge researchcommunities in engineering and physical scienc es both in basic and applied research. The book presents recent advances in theory related to new statistical approaches, effect of non-linearities and presence of symmetries. This editionpresents new contributions related to the physics and control of la minar-turbulent transition in wall-bounded flows, which may have a significant impact on drag reduction applications. Turbulent boundary layers, at increasing Reynoldsnumber, are the main subject of both computational and experimental long research progra ms aimed at improving our knowledge on scaling, energy distribution at different scales, structure eduction, roughness effects to name only a few.Like previous editions several numerical and experimental analysis of complex flows, mostly related to applic ations, are presented. The structure of the present book is as such that contributions have been bundled according to coveringtopics i.e. I Theory, II Stability, III Wall bounded flows, IV, Complex flows, V Acoustic, VI Numerical methods. The volume is de dicated to the memory of Prof. Rudolf Friedrich who prematurely died in Mnster/Germany on the 16th ofAugust 2012. In his honor the conference has started with a special session dedicated to his work.

Note:This thesis addresses two of the central processes which underpin the formation of galaxies: the formation of stars and the injection of energy into the interstellar medium from supernovae, called feedback. In her work ClaudiaLagos has completely ove rhauled the treatment of these processes in simulations of galaxy formation. Her thesis makes two major breakthroughs, and represents the first major steps forward in these areas in more than a decade. Her workhas enabled, for the first time, predictions to be made which can be compared against new observations which probe the neutral gas content of galaxies, opening up a completely novel way to constrain the models. The treatment offeedback from supernovae, and how this removes material from the interste llar medium, is also likely to have a lasting impact on the field. Note:Our book introduces a method to evaluate the accuracy of trend estimation algorithms under conditions similar to those encountered in real time series processing. This method is based on Monte Carlo experiments with artificialtime series numerically generated by an original algorithm. The second part of the book contains several automatic algorithms for trend estimation and time series partitioning. The source codes of the computer programs implementingthese original automatic algorithms are given in the appendix and will be freely available on the web. The book contains clear statement of the conditions and the approximations under which the algorithms work, as well as the properinterpretation of their results. We illustrate the functioning of the a nalyzed algorithms by processing time series from astrophysics, finance, biophysics, and paleoclimatology. The numerical experiment method extensively used in ourbook is already in common use in computational and statistical physics
