Starting with a tutorial for novices in neural field studies, thebook comprises chapters on emergent pattern s, their phase transitions and evolution, on stochastic approaches, cortical development, cognition, robotics and computation, large-scale numerical simulations, the coupling of neural fieldsto the electroencephalogram and phase transitions in anesthesia. The intended readership are students and scientists in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, theoretical biology, and computational neuroscience. Neural field theoryand its applications have a long-standing tradition in the mathematical and computati onal neurosciences. Beginning almost 50 years ago with seminal work by Griffiths and culminating in the 1970ties with the models of Wilson and Cowan,Nunez and Amari, this important research area experienced a renaissance during the 1990ties by the groups of Ermentrout, Bressloff, Haken, and Wright. Since then, much progress has been made in both, the development of mathematical andnumerical techniques, and in physiological refinement and understanding. In contrast to large-scale neural network models desc ribed by huge connectivity matrices that are computationally expensive in numerical simulations, neural fieldmodels described by connectivity kernels allow for analytical treatment by means of functional analysis methods. Note:What are the principles that keep our society together? This question is even more difficult to answer than the long-standing question, what are the forces that keep our world together. However, the social challenges of humanityin the 21st century ra nging from the financial crises to the impacts of globalization, require us to make fast progress in our understanding of how society works, and how our future can be managed in a resilient and sustainable way.This book can present only a few very first s teps towards this ambitious goal. However, based on simple models of social interactions, one can already gain some surprising insights into the social, ``macro-level'' outcomes and dynamicsthat is implied by individual, ``micro-level'' interactions. Depe nding on the nature of these interactions, they may imply the spontaneous formation of social conventions or the birth of social cooperation, but also their suddenbreakdown. This can end in deadly crowd disasters or tragedies of the commons (such as finan cial crises or environmental destruction). Furthermore, we demonstrate that classical modeling approaches (such as representative agent models)do not provide a sufficient understanding of the self-organization in social systems resulting from individual i nteractions. The consideration of randomness, spatial or network interdependencies, and nonlinear feedback effects turnsout to be crucial to get fundamental insights into how social patterns and dynamics emerge. Given the explanation of sometimes counter- intuitive phenomena resulting from these features and their combination, our evolutionary modelingapproach appears to be powerful and insightful. The chapters of this book range from a discussion of the modeling strategy for socio-economic systems over ex perimental issues up the right way of doing agent-based modeling. Note:With the aim of providing a deeper insight into possible mechanisms of biological self-organization, this thesis presents new approaches to describe the process of self-assembly and the impact of spatial organization on thefunction of membrane protei ns, from a statistical physics point of view. It focuses on three important scenarios: the assembly of membrane proteins, the collective response of mechanosensitive channels and the function of the twinarginine translocation (Tat) system. Using methods f rom equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, general conclusions were drawn that demonstrate the importance of the protein-protein interactions. Namely, in the firstpart a general aggregation dynamics model is formulated, and used to show th at fragmentation crucially affects the efficiency of the self-assembly process of proteins. In the second part, by mapping the membrane-mediated forces into asimplified many-body system, the dynamic and equilibrium behaviour of interacting mechanosensitiv e channels is derived, showing that protein agglomeration strongly impacts its desired function. The final part develops a model thatincorporates both the agglomeration and transport function of the Tat system, thereby providing a comprehensive descriptio n of this self-organizing process
