Note:The TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility uses the isotope separation on-line (ISOL) technique to produce rare-isotope beams (RIB). The ISOL system consists of a primary production beam, a target/ion source, amass separator, and be am transport system. The rare isotopes produced during the interaction of the proton beam with the target nucleus are stopped in the bulk of the target material. They diffuse inside the target material matrix tothe surface of the grain and then effuse to the ion source where they are ionized to form an ion beam that can be separated by mass and then guided to the experimental facilities. Note:In this thesis, the measurement of double-spin asymmetry for electron production from heavy flavor decays was performed in a Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in the PHENIX experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory tomeasure the polarized par ton distribution function of gluon in the small Bjorken x region (x~0.01). For this experiment, for the first time a Hadron Blind Detector (HBD), which is a position-sensitive gas Cherenkov counter with GasElectron Multiplier whose surface is evaporated by CsI, was employed. This HBD contributes to reducing the background from electron pairs produced by real and virtual photon conversion. Furthermore, the author develops a new analysismethod for the background reduction, and the signal-to-background rati o is improved by a factor of roughly 2.0. Using the combination of the HBD and a new analysis method, the double-spin asymmetry of the electron production withtransverse momentum ranging 0.5 < pT < 3.0 GeV/c is measured and confirmed to be zero-consistent within the limit of the statistical uncertainty of about 1%. This result identifies the constraint of the gluon polarization in the smallBjorken x region, a worldwide first

Note:The development of coherent radiation sources for sub-angstrom wavelengths - i.e. in the hard X-ray and gamma-ray range - is a challenging goal of modern physics. The availability of such sources will have many applications inbasic science, technolog y and medicine, and, in particular, they may have a revolutionary impact on nuclear and solid state physics, as well as on the life sciences. The present state-of-the-art lasers are capable of emittingelectromagnetic radiation from the infrared to the ult raviolet, while free electron lasers (X-FELs) are now entering the soft X-ray region. Moving further, i.e. into the hard X and/or gamma ray band, however, is not possible withoutnew approaches and technologies. In this book we introduce and discuss one s uch novel approach -the radiation formed in a Crystalline Undulator -whereby electromagnetic radiation is generated by a bunch of ultra-relativisticparticles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline structure. Under certain conditions, such a de vice can emit intensive spontaneous monochromatic radiation and even reach the coherence of laser light sources. Readers willbe presented with the underlying fundamental physics and be familiarized with the theoretical, experimental and technological adv ances made during the last one and a half decades in exploring the various features of investigations intocrystalline undulators. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields - such as materials science, beam physics, the physics of radiat ion, solid state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. Accordingly, much carehas been taken by the authors to make the book as self-contained as possible in this respect, so as to also provide a useful introduction to this emerging field to a broad re adership of researchers and scientist with variousbackgrounds. This new edition has been revised and extended to take recent developments in the field into account.

Note:This book is dedicated to the relativistic (laser intensity above 1018 W/cm2) laser-plasma interactions, which mainly concerns two important aspects: ion acceleration and extreme-light-field (ELF). Based on the ultra-intense andultra-short CP lasers, this book proposes a new method that significantly improves the efficiency of heavy-ion acceleration, and deals with the critical thickness issues of light pressure acceleration. More importantly, a series ofplasma approaches for producing ELFs, such as the relativistic single-cycle laser pulse, the intense broad-spectrum chirped laser pulse and the ultra-intense isolated attosecond (10-18s) pulse are introduced. This book illustrates thatplasma not only affords a tremendous accelerating gradient for ion acceleration but also serves as a novel medium for ELF generation, and hence has the potential of plasma-based optics, which have a great advantage on the lightintensity due to the absence of device damage threshold

Note:The main goal of the book is to provide a systematic and didactic approach to the physics and technology of free-electron lasers. Numerous figures are used for illustrating the underlying ideas and concepts, and links to otherfields of physics are pr ovided. After an introduction to undulator radiation and the low-gain FEL, the one-dimensional theory of the high-gain FEL is developed in a systematic way. Particular emphasis is put on explaining andjustifying the various assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the differential and integral equations governing the FEL dynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions are presented and important FEL parameters aredefined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. One of the mos t important features of a high-gain FEL, the formation of microbunches, is studied at length. The increase of gain length due to beam energy spread, spacecharge forces, and three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction is analyzed. The mechanism of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimentalresults. Various methods of FEL seeding by coherent external radiation are introduced, together with experimental results. The worlds first soft X-ray FEL, the user facility FLASH at DESY, is described in some detail to give animpression of the complexity of such an accelerator-based light source. The last chapter is devoted to the new hard X-ray FELs which generate extremel y intense radiation in the Angstrm regime. The appendices contain supplementarymaterial and more involved calculations.

Note:Neutrinos continue tobe the most mysterious and, arguably, the most fascinating particles of the Standard Model as their intrinsic properties such as absolute mass scale and CP properties are unknown. The open question of theabsolute neutrino mass sc ale will be addressed with unprecedented accuracy by the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, currently under construction. This thesisfocusses on the spectrometer part of KATRIN and backgroundprocesses therein. Various background sources such as small Penning traps, as well as nuclear decays from single radon atoms are fully characterized here for the first time. Most importantly, however, it was possible to reduce thebackground in the spectrometer by more than five orders of magnitude by elim inating Penning traps and by developing a completely new background reduction method by stochastically heating trapped electrons using electron cyclotronresonance (ECR). The workbeautifully demonstrates that the obstacles and challenges in measuring the a bsolute mass scale of neutrinos can be met successfully if novel experimental tools (ECR) and novel computing methods(KASSIOPEIA) are combined to allow almost background-freetritium -spectroscopy

Note:High-energy astrophysics has unveiled a Universe very different from that only known from optical observations. It has revealed many types of objects in which typical variability timescales are as short as years, months, days, andhours (in quasars, X -ray binaries, and other objects), and even down to milli-seconds in gamma ray bursts. The sources of energy that are encountered are only very seldom nuclear fusion, and most of the time gravitation, a paradox whenone thinks that gravitation is, by many orders of magnitude, the weakest of the fundamental interactions. The understanding of these objects' physical conditions and the processes revealed by high-energy astrophysics in the lastdecades is nowadays part of astrophysicists' culture, even of those active in other domains of astronomy. This book evolved from lectures given to master and PhD students at the University of Geneva since the early 1990s. It aims atproviding astronomers and physicists intending to be active in high-energy astrophysics a broad basis on which they should be able to build the more specific knowledge they will need. While in the first part of the book the physicalprocesses are described and derived in detail, the second part studies astrophysical objects in which high-energy astrophysics plays a crucial role. This two-pronged approach will help students recognise physical processes by theirobservational signatures in contexts that may differ widely from those presented here

Note:It has been suggested that local parity violation (LPV) in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) would lead to charge separation of quarks by the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in heavy ion collisions. Charge Multiplicity AsymmetryCorrelation Study Searching fo r Local Parity Violation at RHIC for STAR Collaboration presents the detailed study of charge separation with respect to the event plane. Results on charge multiplicity asymmetry in Au+Au and d+Aucollisions at 200 GeV by the STAR experiment are reported. It was found that the correlation results could not be explained by CME alone. Additionally, the charge separation signal as a function of the measured azimuthal angle range aswell as the event-by-event anisotropy parameter are studied. These results indi cate that the charge separation effect appears to be in-plane rather than out-of-plane. It is discovered that the charge separation effect is proportionalto the event-by-event azimuthal anisotropy and consistent with zero in events with zero azimuthal ani sotropy. These studies suggest that the charge separation effect, within the statistical error, may be a net effect of eventanisotropy and correlated particle production. A potential upper limit on the CME is also presented through this data
