Another periodic crystalline structure is usedto produce quasimonoch romatic polarized photon beams via the coherent bremsstrahlung mechanism (CBS). Due to such characteristics as monochromaticity, polarization and adjustability, these types of radiation is of large interest forapplied and basic research of accelerator-emi tted radiation. The book provides a detailed overview of the fundamental principles behind electromagnetic radiation emitted from accelerated charged particles (e.g. UR, CBS, radiation offast electrons in Laser flash fields) as well as a unified descripti on of relatively new radiation mechanisms which attracted great interest in recent years. Note:Laser driven proton beams are still in their infancy but already have some outstanding attributes compared to those from conventional accelerators. One such attribute is the typically low beam emittance. This allows excellentresolution in imaging app lications like proton radiography. In the thesis by Thomas Sokollik a novel imaging technique - the proton streak camera - was developed and first used to measure both the spatial and temporal evolution ofultra-strong electrical fields in laser-driven pla smas. Such investigations are of paramount importance for the understanding of laser-plasma interactions and, thus, for optimization of laser driven particle acceleration. Inparticular, the present work investigated micrometer-sized spherical targets afte r laser irradiation. The confined geometry of plasmas and fields was found to influence the kinetic energy and spatial distribution of accelerated ions.This could be shown both in experimental radiography images and and in numerical simulations, one of wh ich was selected for the cover page of Physical Review Letters

Note:This monograph begins with a review of the basic equations of spin motion in particle accelerators. It then reviews how polarized protons can be accelerated to several tens of GeV using as examples the preaccelerators of HERA, a6.3 km long cyclic acc elerator at DESY / Hamburg. Such techniques have already been used at the AGS of BNL / New York, to accelerate polarized protons to 25 GeV. But for acceleration to energies of several hundred GeV as in RHIC,TEVATRON, HERA, LHC, or a VLHC, new problems can occur which can lead to a significantly diminished beam polarization. For these high energies, it is necessary to look in more detail at the spin motion, and for that the invariant spinfield has proved to be a useful tool. This is already widely used for the description of high-energy electron beams that become polarized by the emission of spin-flip synchrotron radiation. It is shown that this field gives rise to anadiabatic invariant of spin-orbit motion and that it defines the maximum time average pola rization available to a particle physics experiment. These concepts make it possible to optimize a high-energy accelerator for storing highlypolarized beams. The utility of the invariant spin field is illustrated by simulations of spin motion in HERA and in other high-energy accelerators. Various methods for computing the invariant spin field, the adiabatic spin invariant,and the amplitude dependent spin tune are presented. Moreover, several high-energy spin-orbit dynamical effects will be discussed which go beyond conventional models of spin dynamics and were observed in simulations with these novelmethods. The book is suitable for researchers of the field and for introducing students to this field of research
