Title:Andr-Louis Cholesky [electronic resource] : Mathematician, Topographer and Army Officer
Author(s): Claude Brezinski
Dominique Tourns
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:Outside the professional circles of topography and applied mathematics, the life and work of Andr-Louis Cholesky (18751918) are still relatively unknown to the scientific community. This new book appreciably widens theexposure of his remarkable perso nal achievements in topography and mathematics to a much larger international audience. Cholesky is also interesting to historians because he is a perfect representative of the scientistsengineers that, since the early 19th century, had issued from the F rench scientific high schools. Because they had received a high level of mathematical education, they were able to innovate in their practice of engineering. In thecase of Cholesky, this resulted in original contributions in artillery, topography, numeric al analysis and graphical calculation. In addition, the book places his education and works within the history of several European countriesthrough the 17th to 19th centuries. The book begins with Cholesky's biography, followed by his familys history and an introduction to topography. It continues with a historical analysis of an unpublished paper (translated intoEnglish) in which Cholesky explained his method for linear systems. Cholesky's other works are then described, such as his participation in tea ching at a superior school by correspondence founded by Lon Eyrolles. His importantunpublished book in French on graphical calculation, which is reproduced in its entirety, is analyzed in detail and compared to similar contemporary publications. The biogr aphy of Ernest Benoit, who wrote the first paper on Cholesky'smethod, is provided. Various documents, highlighting the life and the personality of Cholesky, round out his story and end the book

Title:Portrait of Gunnar Klln [electronic resource] : A Physics Shooting Star and Poet of Early Quantum Field Theory
Author(s): Cecilia Jarlskog
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Wolfgang Pauli referred to him as 'my discovery,' Robert Oppenheimer described him as 'one of the most gifted theorists' and Niels Bohr found him enormously stimulating. Who was the man in question, Gunnar Klln (1926-1968)?His appearance in the physi cs sky was like a shooting star. His contributions to the scientific debate caused excitement among young and old. Similar to his friend and mentor, Wolfgang Pauli, he demanded honesty and rigor in physics -a distinct dividing line between fact and specul ation. In his obituary, Arthur S. Wightman would write: 'Gunnar Klln was a proud continuer of the tradition in quantum field theory established by Wolfgang Pauli. His papers onquantum electrodynamics in the period 1950-1954 carried the non-perturbative ap proach to quantum electrodynamics forward to a point beyond which very little essential progress has been made up to the present day. At the time I wastrying to puzzle out the grammar of the language of quantum field theory, and here was Klln already writ ing poetry in the language!'. In addition to being a remarkable scientist, Klln had a very interesting personality, wellworth exploring. In her book, physicist Cecilia Jarlskog traces both the personal and scientific trajectory of this unsung hero of the early days of high-energy physics and quantum field theory. A number of invited contributions bymembers of the Klln family and distinguished researchers from the field, all of them personally acquainted with Klln, combine to form an authentic portrait of the researcher and the man. Last but not least, the reader willbecome acquainted with some aspects of the history of particle physics in those days, as related by Klln and those who corresponded with him. A commented selection of his most important and no t easily accessible papers is includedas an added bonus for specialists

Date:2012
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The purpose of this volume is to provide an overview of Terry Speeds contributions to statistics and beyond. Each of the fifteen chapters concerns a particular area of research and consists of a commentary by a subject-matterexpert and selection of r epresentative papers. The chapters, organized more or less chronologically in terms of Terrys career, encompass a wide variety of mathematical and statistical domains, along with their application to biologyand medicine. Accordingly, earlier chapters tend to be more theoretical, covering some algebra and probability theory, while later chapters concern more recent work in genetics and genomics. The chapters also span continents andgenerations, as they present research done over four decades, while crisscr ossing the globe. The commentaries provide insight into Terrys contributions to a particular area of research, by summarizing his work and describing itshistorical and scientific context, motivation, and impact. In addition to shedding light on Terrys sci entific achievements, the commentaries reveal endearing aspects of his personality, such as his intellectual curiosity, energy, humor, and generosity

Title:The Astronomer Jules Janssen [electronic resource] A Globetrotter of Celestial Physics
Author(s): Franoise Launay
Date:2012
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Every aspect of the personality of Janssen (18241907) that DArtagnan of science, this bard of the Sun, and this audacious master builder is covered here by Franoise Launay, his attentive and equally eruditebiographer. A physicist, inventor and buil der, Janssen was guided by his energy and curiosity. His research followed two directions: on the one hand the atmospheres of the Earth and the Sun, and on the other, two techniques:spectroscopy and photography. Among his numerous voyages across the globe , he went to Japan in 1874 to follow the transit of Venus in front of the Sun, the same year in which he invented his famous photographic revolver, which was, intruth, a great technical success. To observe the Sun during total eclipses he traveled to the Indies in 1868, to Oran in 1870 (escaping from besieged Paris by balloon!), returned to India in 1871, left for Siam in 1875 and, in 1883,for an island in the Pacific. One can thus understand why Henriette often complained of the solitude in which she was left by her peripatetic husband: There are men who leave their wives for mistresses you do it for journeys!... Basking in the glow of his success, Janssen was able to undertake the construction of the great astrophysical observatory of which he had dream ed. It was at Meudon that he had it built. From the Preface by Jean-Claude Pecker

Note:Real-life problems are often quite complicated and, for centuries, Mathematics has provided the necessary tools and ideas to formulate these problems mathematically and then help in solving them either exactly or approximately. This book aims to gathe r a collection of papers dealing with several different problems arising from many disciplines and some modern mathematical approaches to handle them. In this respect, the book offers a wide overview on many ofthe current trends in Mathematics as valuable formal techniques in capturing and exploiting the complexity involved in real-world situations. Several researchers, colleagues, friends and students of Professor Mara Luisa Menndezhave contributed to this volume to pay tribute to her and to recognize th e diverse contributions she had made to the fields of Mathematics and Statistics and to the profession in general. She had a sweet and strong personality, andinstilled great values and work ethics in her students through her dedication to teaching and res earch. Even though the academic community lost her prematurely, she would continue to provide inspiration to many students and researchersworldwide through her published work

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Ernst Zermelo (1871-1953) is best-known for the statement of the axiom of choice and his axiomatization of set theory. However, he also worked in applied mathematics and mathematical physics. His dissertation, for example, promoted the calculus of var iations, and he created the pivotal method in the theory of rating systems. This biography attempts to shed light on all facets of Zermelo's life and achievements. Personal and scientific aspects are keptseparate as far as coherence allows, in order to en able the reader to follow the one or the other of these threads. The description of his personality owes much to conversations with his late wife Gertrud. The presentation of his workexplores motivations, aims, acceptance, and influence. Selected proofs a nd information gleaned from unpublished notes and letters add to the analysis. All facts presented are documented by appropriate sources. The biography containsmore than 40 photos and facsimiles, most of them provided by Gertrud Zermelo and published here for the first time

Title:Multivariate and Mixture Distribution Rasch Models [electronic resource] : Extensions and Applications

Claus H Carstensen
Date:2007
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This volume covers extensions of the Rasch model, one of the most researched and applied models in educational research and social science. This collection contains 22 chapters by some of the most recognized international expertsin the field. They co ver topics ranging from general model extensions to applications in fields as diverse as cognition, personality, organizational and sports psychology, and health sciences and education. The Rasch model is designedfor categorical data, often collected as e xaminees' responses to multiple tasks such as cognitive items from psychological tests or from educational assessments. The Rasch model's elegant mathematical form is suitable for extensionsthat allow for greater flexibility in handling complex samples of examinees and collections of tasks from different domains. In these extensions, the Rasch model is enhanced by additional structural elements that either account fordifferences between diverse populations or for differences among observed variables. Rese arch on extending well-known statistical tools like regression, mixture distribution, and hierarchical linear models has led to the adoption ofRasch model features to handle categorical observed variables. We maintain both perspectives in the volume and s how how these merged modelsRasch models with a more complex item or population structureare derived either from theRasch model or from a structural model, how they are estimated, and where they are applied. Matthias von Davier is a Senior Research Scienti st in the Research & Development Division at Educational Testing Service. He is the author ofWINMIRA, a software package for estimating latent class models, mixture distribution Rasch models, and hybrid Rasch models. The software grew out of his work with colleagues at the Methodology Department of the Institute for ScienceEducation (IPN) in Kiel, Germany. Von Davier's current research is concerned with extensions of Rasch models and more general
