Title: | Thermal Properties of Solids at Room and Cryogenic Temperatures [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Guglielmo Ventura Mauro Perfetti |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book is a guide for materials scientists, physicists, chemists and engineers who wish toexplore the field of low-temperature material properties. The focus is on heat capacity, thermal expansion and electrical and thermalconductivity. The author s report a wide range of experimental details and data, and have compiled useful tables of low-temperature data. Each chapter of the book starts by addressing the theoretical basis of the phenomena. This is aconcise presentation, but it helps the reader t o develop a deeper understanding of the experiments. The second part of the chapters is dedicated to describing the main experimental techniques to measure thermal properties at low andvery low temperature ranges. The final part of each chapter provides a wealth of relevant experimental data in the form of tables and graphs |

Part 1 consists of seven chapters, offering a wide range of computationaland experimental appr oaches to cavitation erosion. It includes a general introduction to cavitation and cavitation erosion, a detailed description of facilities and measurement techniques commonly used in cavitation erosion studies, anextensive presentation of various stages of cavitation damage (including incubation and mass loss), and insights into the contribution of computational methods to the analysis of both fluid and material behavior. The proposed approachis based on a detailed description of impact loads generated b y collapsing cavitation bubbles and a physical analysis of the material response to these loads. Part 2 is devoted to a selection of nine papers presented at theInternational Workshop on Advanced Experimental and Numerical Techniques for Cavitation Erosio n (Grenoble, France, 1-2 March 2011), representingthe forefront of research oncavitation erosion. Innovative numerical and experimentalinvestigations illustrate the most advanced breakthroughs in cavitation erosion research. |

Title: | Polarization Bremsstrahlung [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Andrey V Korol Andrey V Solov'yov |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book introduces and reviews both theory and applications of polarizational bremsstrahlung, i.e. the electromagnetic radiation emitted during collisions of charged particles with structured, thus polarizable targets, such asatoms, molecules and c lusters. The subject, following the first experimental evidence a few decades ago, has gained importance through a number of modern applications. Thus, the study of several radiative mechanisms is expected tolead to the design of novel light sources, ope rating in various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Conversely, the analysis of the spectral and angular distribution of the photon emission constitutes a new tool for extractinginformation on the interaction of the colliding particles, and on their internal structure and dynamical properties. Last but not least, accurate quantitative descriptions of the photon emission processes determine the radiativeenergy losses of particles in various media, thereby providing essential information required for e.g. plasma diagnostics as well as astrophysical and medical applications (such as radiation therapy). This book primarilyaddresses graduate students and researchers with a background in atomic, molecular, optical or plasma physics, but will also be of b enefit to anyone wishing to enter the field. |

Title: | Photoelectron Spectroscopy [electronic resource] : Bulk and Surface Electronic Structures |
Author(s): |
Shigemasa Suga Akira Sekiyama |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved inthe last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. Highresolution angle resolved photoelectron sp ectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excitedstates are feasible by time of flight spectroscopywith fully util izing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress byusing higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dep endent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book dealswith the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complemen tary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared andX-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids b ut also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy |

Title: | Rheophysics [electronic resource] : Matter in all its States |
Author(s): |
Philippe Coussot |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book presents a unified view of the physicochemical origin of the mechanical behaviour of gases, simple solids and liquids, suspensions, polymers, emulsions, foams, and granular materials, along with techniques for measuringthat behaviour. Besid es molecular materials in all their classical gaseous, solid, or liquid states, we deal daily with a number of other materials made of coarser elements such as polymers, cells, grains, bubbles, and droplets. Theytake on the familiar appearance of paints, inks, cements, muds, foams, emulsions, toothpastes, gels, etc. These materials exhibit complex structures and sometimes amazing types of mechanical behaviour, often intermediate between thoseof a simple liquid and a simple solid. From a practical standpoi nt, the aim is to analyze their internal evolution (aging, restructuring, phase separation, etc.), then to formulate these materials in accordance with the desiredproperties, and thereby devise new materials. With that aim in mind, it is crucial to unders tand how these materials deform or flow, depending on the interactions and structures formed by the elements they contain. This book isintended for students as well as more advanced researchers in mechanics, physics, chemistry, and biology. The mathematic al formalism is reduced in order to focus on physical explanations |
