Note:Measurement plays a fundamental role both in physical and behavioral sciences, as well as in engineering and technology: it is the link between abstract models and empirical reality and is a privileged method of gatheringinformation from the real wor ld. Is it possible to develop a single theory of measurement for the various domains of science and technology in which measurement is involved? This book takes the challenge by addressing the followingmain issues: What is the meaning of measurement? How do we measure? What can be measured? A theoretical framework that could truly be shared by scientists in different fields, ranging from physics and engineering to psychology isdeveloped. The future in fact will require greater collaboration between scienc e and technology and between different sciences. Measurement, which played a key role in the birth of modern science, can act as an essentialinterdisciplinary tool and language for this new scenario. A sound theoretical basis for addressing key problems i n measurement is provided. These include perceptual measurement, the evaluation of uncertainty, the evaluation ofinter-comparisons, the analysis of risks in decision-making and the characterization of dynamical measurement. Note:Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved inthe last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. Highresolution angle resolved photoelectron sp ectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excitedstates are feasible by time of flight spectroscopywith fully util izing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress byusing higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dep endent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book dealswith the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complemen tary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared andX-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids b ut also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy

Note:Analysis of Excitation and Ionization of Atoms and Molecules by Electron Impact, by Afzal Chaudhry and Hans Kleinpoppen, describes in detail the measurements of the partial and total doubly differential cross sections for themultiple-ionization of ra re gas atoms by electron impact. These measurements show, among other trends, the role of Auger transitions in the production of multiply ionized atoms in the region where the incident electron energy issufficient to produce inner shell ionization. Other processes like Coster-Kronig transitions and shake off also contribute towards increasing the charge of the ions. As discussed in the book, an incident electron having energy of 6keV, for example, in a collision with xenon atom can remove up to nine elect rons! The measurements of doubly differential cross sections for the dissociative and non-dissociative ionization of hydrogen, sulfur dioxide and sulfur hexafluoride molecular gases are also explored. The results of the measurements for the sulfur dioxide molecule provide strategies for ways in which this major atmospheric pollutant can be removed from the atmosphere by electron impactdissociation. The book also delves into the present measurements of the polarization parameters of the fluorescence radiat ion emitted by the excited atoms of sodium and potassium. It thoroughly investigates the excitation of heliumatoms and the helium-like alkaline earth metal atoms of calcium and strontium as well. This book invites the reader to learn more about the excita tion and ionization of atoms and molecules by leading to the discovery of new processesand the excitement of surprising results. Since experimentalists realized that measurements in general areburdened by unknown systema tic errors, the classical, widespread used evaluation procedures scrutinizing the consequences of random errors alone turned out to be obsolete. Note:This course-based monograph introduces the reader to the theory of continuous measurements in quantum mechanics and provides some benchmark applications. The approach chosen, quantum trajectory theory, is based on the stochasticSchrdinger and master equations, which determine the evolution of the a-posteriori state of a continuously observed quantum system and give the distribution of the measurement output. The present introduction is restricted tofinite-dimensional quantum systems and diffusive out puts. Two appendices introduce the tools of probability theory and quantum measurement theory which are needed for the theoretical developments in the first part of the book. First,the basic equations of quantum trajectory theory are introduced, with all their mathematical properties, starting from the existence and uniqueness of their solutions. This makes the text also suitable for other applications of thesame stochastic differential equations in different fields such as simulations of master equations or dynamical reduction theories. In the next step the equivalence between the stochastic approach and the theory of continuousmeasurements is demonstrated. To conclude the theoretical exposition, the properties of the output of the continuous measurement are analyzed in detail. This is a stochastic process with its own distribution, and the reader will learnhow to compute physical quantities such as its moments and its spectrum. In particular this last concept is introduced with clear and explicit refere nce to the measurement process. The two-level atom is used as the basic prototype toillustrate the theory in a concrete application. Quantum phenomena appearing in the spectrum of the fluorescence light, such as Mollows triplet structure, squeezing of the fluorescence light, and the linewidth narrowing, arepresented. Last but not least, the theory of quantum continuous measurements is the natural starting point to develop a feedback control theory
