Title:History and Evolution of Concepts in Physics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Harry Varvoglis
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Our understanding ofnature, and in particular of physics and the laws governing it, has changed radically since the days of the ancient Greek natural philosophers. This book explains how and why these changes occurred, throughlandmark experiments as well as theories that - for their time - wererevolutionary. The presentation covers Mechanics, Optics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Relativity Theory, Atomic Physicsand Quantum Physics. The book placesemphasis on ideas and on a qualitative presentati on, rather than on mathematics and equations. Thus, althoughprimarily addressed to those who are studying or have studied science,it can alsobe read by non-specialists. The authorconcludeswith a discussion ofthe evolution and organization of universities, from ancient times until today, and ofthe organization and dissemination of knowledge through scientific publications and conferences

Title:From Ultra Rays to Astroparticles [electronic resource] : A Historical Introduction to Astroparticle Physics
Author(s): Brigitte Falkenburg
Wolfgang Rhode
Date:2012
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The book is a historical introduction to astroparticle physics. Its scope is to give an overview of this complex field of research, starting with the discovery of cosmic rays (Victor Hess, 1912) until the current experiments withparticle telescopes. The book focuses on the ways in which physics changes in the course of this history. The following changes run parallel, overlap, and/or interact: - Discovery of effects like X-rays, radioactivity, cosmic rays, new particles, the Cosmic Microwave Backgro und and its anisotropies, but also progress through non-discoveries (monopoles) etc. - The change of the description of nature in physics, as consequence of the scientific revolutionsat the beginning of the 20th century, giving rise to quantum physics, relativity, etc. - The shifts from particle physics to cosmology and to particle physics with cosmic accelerators. - The change of experimental methods, cooperations, and disciplinary divisions. With regard to the latter change, a main topic of the boo k is to make the specific multi-disciplinary features of astroparticle physics clear to undergraduate and graduate students, historians of physics, and philosophers of science

Title:Einstein and the Changing Worldviews of Physics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Christoph Lehner
Jrgen Renn
Matthias Schemmel
Date:2012
Publisher:Boston : Birkhuser Boston
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This volume reviews conceptual conflicts at the foundations of physics now and in the past century. The focus is on the conditions and consequences of Einsteins pathbreaking achievements that sealed the decline of theclassical notions of space, time, radiation, and matter, and resulted in the theory of relativity. Particular attention is paid to the implications of conceptual conflicts for scientific views of the world at large, thus providingthe basis for a comparison of the demise of the mechanical worldview at the turn of the 20th century with the challenges presented by cosmology at the turn of the 21st century. Throughout the work, Einsteins contributions are notseen in isolation but instead set into the wider intellectual context of dealing wit h the problem of gravitation in the twilight of classical physics the investigation of the historical development is carried out with a number ofepistemological questions in mind, concerning, in particular, the transformation process of knowledge associat ed with the changing worldviews of physics. Einstein and the Changing Worldviews of Physics is divided into four main parts:* Part I: At the Limits of the Classical Worldview * Part II: Contexts of the Relativity Revolution * Part III: The Emergence of th e Relativistic Worldview * Part IV: A New Worldview in the Making. The contributions explore variousaspects of the emerging relativistic views in modern physics by giving an historical, philosophical, and mathematical account of Einsteins work, as well as the work of other distinguished physicists in the field. Taken as a whole, the book is focused on the interplay between mathematical concepts and physical ideas throughout history by studying todays scientific world and how it continues to redefine physic s in the 21st century. Contributors: A. Ashtekar, E.Battaner, J.E. Beckman, K.A. Brading, T. Dray, J. Eisenstaedt, E. Florido, H.F. Goenner, D. Kennefick, J. Renn, T.A.Ryckman, D

Title:Euler as Physicist [electronic resource]
Author(s): Dieter Suisky
Date:2009
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Euler as Physicist analyzes the exceptional role of Leonhard Euler (1707 - 1783) in the history of science and emphasizes especially his fundamental contributions to physics. Although Euler is famous as the leadingmathematician of the 18th century, h is contributions to physics are as important for their innovative methods and solutions. Several books are devoted to Euler as mathematician, but none to Euler as physicist, like in this book.Eulers contributions to mechanics are rooted in his life-long p lan presented in two volume treatise programmatically entitled Mechanics or the science of motion analytically demonstrated. Published in 1736, Eulers treatiseindicates the turn over from the traditional geometric representation of mechanics to a new appr oach. In writing Mechanics Euler did the first step to put the plan and his completion into practice through 1760. It is of particularinterest to study how Euler made immediate use of his mathematics for mechanics and coordinated his progress in mathemati cs with his progress in physics. Euler's mechanics is not only a model for a consistently formulated theory, butallows for generalizations of Euler's principles. It is shown that even problems in contemporary physics may be advantageously reconsidered and reformulated in terms of Euler's early unified approach. The interplay between physics andmathematics which appeared in the 18th century is compared to the development of physics in the 20th century, especially to the development of quantum mechanics bet ween 1900 and 1930. The author aims to show how Euler' work representsa rare example of a simultaneous and harmonic composition of results of different origin and nature which have been joined into a unique and marvellous result

Title:Kristian Birkeland [electronic resource] : The First Space Scientist
Author(s): Alv Egeland
William J Burke
Date:2005
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:At the beginning of the 20th century Kristian Birkeland (1867-1917), a Norwegian scientist of insatiable curiosity, addressed questions that had vexed European scientists for centuries. Why do the northern lights appear overheadwhen the Earths magnet ic field is disturbed? How are magnetic storms connected to disturbances on the Sun? To answer these questions Birkeland interpreted his advance laboratory simulations and daring campaigns in the Arcticwilderness in the light of Maxwells newly discovered laws of electricity and magnetism. Birkelands ideas were dismissed for decades, only to be vindicated when satellites could fly above the Earths atmosphere. Faced with thedepleting stocks of Chilean saltpeter and the consequent prospect of mass starvation , Birkeland showed his practical side, inventing the first industrial scale method to extract nitrogen-based fertilizers from the air. Norsk Hydro, oneof modern Norways largest industries, stands as a living tribute to his genius. Hoping to demonstrate wh at we now call the solar wind, Birkeland moved to Egypt in 1913. Isolated from his friends by the Great War, Birkeland yearnedto celebrate his 50th birthday in Norway. The only safe passage home, via the Far East, brought him to Tokyo where in the late sp ring of 1917 he passed away
