Note:Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved inthe last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. Highresolution angle resolved photoelectron sp ectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excitedstates are feasible by time of flight spectroscopywith fully util izing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress byusing higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dep endent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book dealswith the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complemen tary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared andX-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids b ut also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy

Note:The unique electronic band structure of graphene gives rise to remarkable properties when in contact with a superconducting electrode. In this thesis two main aspects of these junctions are analyzed: the induced superconductingproximity effect and th e non-local transport properties in multi-terminal devices. For this purpose specific models are developed and studied using Green function techniques, which allow us to take into account the detailed microscopicstructure of the graphene-superconductor in terface. It is shown that these junctions are characterized by the appearance of bound states at subgap energies which are localized at the interface region. Furthermore it is shown thatgraphene-supercondutor-graphene junctions can be used to favor the sp litting of Cooper pairs for the generation of non-locally entangled electron pairs. Finally, using similar techniques the thesis analyzes the transport properties ofcarbon nanotube devices coupled with superconducting electrodes and in graphene superlatti ces

Note:Mathematical Modeling for Complex Fluids and Flows provides researchers and engineering practitioners encountering fluid flows with state-of-the-art knowledge in continuum concepts and associated fluid dynamics. In doing so itsupplies the means to de sign mathematical models of these flows that adequately express the engineering physics involved. It exploits the implicit link between the turbulent flow of classical Newtonian fluids and the laminar andturbulent flow of non-Newtonian fluids such as thos e required in food processing and polymeric flows. The book develops a descriptive mathematical model articulated through continuum mechanics concepts for these non-Newtonian,viscoelastic fluids and turbulent flows. Each complex fluid and flow is examined in this continuum context as well as in combination with the turbulent flow of viscoelastic fluids. Some details are also explored via kinetic theory,especially viscoelastic fluids and their treatment with the Boltzmann equation. Note:The NMR probe has yielded a vast array of data for the high-Tc materials, corresponding to different compounds, ionic sites, and nuclear species, as well as to a wide variety of experimental conditions. Over the twenty years,since the discovery of su perconducting cuprates, ongoing analysis and discussion of cuprate NMR data have resulted in a wealth of important insights into the physics of these exotic systems. The aims of this monograph are threefold.First, it reviews NMR methodology as it has been applied to the cuprate studies. This is addressed to NMR practitioners and to physics laypersons alike. Next, it presents a review of cuprate NMR measurements and the wide variety ofphenomena which they represent. The third phase is to recount the theore tical model calculations and other proposals which have been put forward to account for these data. Parts two and three are presented in parallel, as there aremany aspects to both topics, each with its own interesting history. There is, even twenty years on, a substantial level of current theoretical development underway on the topic of high-Tc. Thus, there are theoretical controversies tobe addressed, notably that between the one and two-component pictures of NMR dynamics, which may not be resolved for s ome time to come. Further, even though one would have to say that the experimental picture is largely settled forhigh-Tc NMR studies, theoretical controversies may legitimately call for new, improved or more extensive data. There are also apparent conflic ts between NMR and neutron scattering results. These must be addressed and rationalized verycarefully. What remains in the end, then, is a snapshot of an ongoing enterprise, which is undoubtedly the grandest program ever undertaken under the rubric of con densed matter NMR studies
