Title:Control of Complex Nonlinear Systems with Delay [electronic resource]
Author(s): Philipp Hvel
Date:2011
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This research addresses delay effects in nonlinear systems, which are ubiquitous in various fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and even in social and economic systems. They may arise as a result of processingtimes or due to the finit e propagation speed of information between the constituents of a complex system. Time delay has two complementary, counterintuitive and almost contradictory facets. On the one hand, delay is able to induceinstabilities, bifurcations of periodic and more c omplicated orbits, multi-stability and chaotic motion. On the other hand, it can suppress instabilities, stabilize unstable stationary or periodic states and may control complex chaoticdynamics. This thesis deals with both aspects, and presents novel fund amental results on the controllability of nonlinear dynamics by time-delayed feedback, as well as applications to lasers, hybrid-mechanical systems, and coupledneural systems

Title:Innovation Networks [electronic resource] : New Approaches in Modelling and Analyzing
Author(s): Andreas Pyka
Andrea Scharnhorst
Date:2009
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The science of graphs and networks has become by now a well-established tool for modelling and analyzing a variety of systems with a large number of interacting components. Starting from the physical sciences, applications havespread rapidly to the n atural and social sciences, as well as to economics, and are now further extended, in this volume, to the concept of innovations, viewed broadly. In an abstract, systems-theoretical approach, innovation can beunderstood as a critical event which destabili zes the current state of the system, and results in a new process of self-organization leading to a new stable state. The contributions to this anthology address different aspects of therelationship between innovation and networks. The various chapters in corporate approaches in evolutionary economics, agent-based modeling, social network analysis and econophysics and explore the epistemic tension between insights intoeconomics and society-related processes, and the insights into new forms of complex dynam ics

Title:Modeling Complex Living Systems [electronic resource]
Author(s): Nicola Bellomo
Date:2008
Publisher:Boston, MA : Birkhuser Boston
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Using tools from mathematical kinetic theory and stochastic game theory, this work deals with the modeling of large complex systems in the applied sciences, particularly those comprised of several interacting individuals whosedynamics follow rules de termined by some organized, or even intelligent ability. Traditionally, methods of mathematical kinetic theory have been applied to model the evolution of large systems of interacting classical or quantumparticles. This book, on the other hand, examines t he modeling of living systems as opposed to inert systems. The author develops new mathematical methods and toolshopefully a new mathematicstoward the modeling of livingsystems. Such tools need to be far more complex than those dealing with systems of ine rt matter. The first part of the book deals with deriving general evolution equations that can be customized to particular systems of interest in theapplied sciences. The second part of the book deals with various models and applications. The presentation unfolds using the following common approach in each chapter: * Phenomenological interpretation of the physical system in thecontext of mathematical modeling * Derivation of the mathematical model using methods from mathematical kinetic theory for active particles * Simulations, parameter sensitivity analysis, and critical inspection of the derived modeltowards validation * Overview of presented ideas to improve existing models, with special emphasis on applications Specific topics covered include: * Mode ling of the competition between cells of an aggressive invasive agent and cellsof the immune system * Modeling of vehicular traffic flow * Modeling of swarms and crowd dynamics in complex geometric environments * Methodological aspects related to multisca le modeling of large systems viewed as interconnectedsubsystems Modeling Complex Living Systems is a valuable resource for applied mathematicians, engineers, physicists, biologists, economists

Jrgen Kurths
Changsong Zhou
Date:2007
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The formation of collective behavior in large ensembles or networks of coupled oscillatory elements is one of the oldest and most fundamental aspects of dynamical systems theory. Potential and present applications span a vastspectrum of fields rangin g from physics, chemistry, geoscience, through life- and neurosciences to engineering, the economic and the social sciences. This work systematically investigates a large number of oscillatory networkconfigurations that are able to describe many real syst ems such as electric power grids, lasers or the heart muscle - to name but a few. This book is conceived as an introduction to the field for graduate students in physics andapplied mathematics as well as being a compendium for researchers from any field o f application interested in quantitative models

Title:Uncertainty and Surprise in Complex Systems [electronic resource] : Question on Working with the Unexpected
Author(s): Reuben R McDaniel
Dean J Driebe
Date:2005
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Complexity science has been a source of new insight in physical and social systems and has demonstrated that unpredictability and surprise are fundamental aspects of the world around us. This book is the outcome of a discussionmeeting of leading scho lars and critical thinkers with expertise in complex systems sciences and leaders from a variety of organizations sponsored by the Prigogine Center at The University of Texas at Austin and the Plexus Institute toexplore strategies for understanding uncert ainty and surprise. Besides distributions to the conference it includes a key digest by the editors as well as a commentary by the late nobel laureat Ilya Prigogine, Surprises in half of acentury. The book is intended for researchers and scientists in com plexity science as well as for a broad interdisciplinary audience of both practitioners and scholars. It will well serve those interested in the research issues andin the application of complexity science to physical and social systems
