Title:Orrery [electronic resource] : A Story of Mechanical Solar Systems, Clocks, and English Nobility
Author(s): Tony Buick
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:To find the true story of the orrery, this book takes the reader tothe vibrant, tumultous London of the 1600s.A mechanical model that shows the movements of the Moon and planets, the orrery takes its name from the Boylefamily the Earls of Orrery. He re is the fascinating story of theorigins ofthis intricatedevice. Orreries are found everywhere. They appear in paintings, on the side of royal clocks, in stately home hallways, and of course, inmuseums all over the world. Scientific instruments to demons trate the movements of the planetsand predict their positions using measuring devices, they were devised largely by clockmakers, but many others played a role too and aregiven due credit. The story of the Boyles is not just relevant to a tiny corner of Ir eland, but spans history. Orrery highlights the process of discovery and humankinds universal fascination with the heavens, providing afascinating example of the relationship between innovative thinking (invention) and precision engineering (execution). I t willappeal to anyone interested in popular astronomy, astronomical mechanical devices, scientific instruments, the history of clocks - and even the history of aristocratic and prestigious families!

Title:Visual Lunar and Planetary Astronomy [electronic resource]
Author(s): Paul G Abel
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:With the advent of CCDs and webcams, the focus of amateur astronomy has to some extent shifted from science to art. The object of many amateur astronomers is now to produce stunning images that, although beautiful, are notintended to have scientific merit. Paul Abel has been addressing this issue by promoting visual astronomy wherever possible at talks to astronomical societies, in articles for popular science magazines, and on BBC TVs The Sky atNight. Visual Lunar and Planetary Astronomy is a comp rehensive modern treatment of visual lunar and planetary astronomy, showing that even in the age of space telescopes and interplanetary probes it is still possible to contributescientifically with no more than a moderately priced commercially made astrono mical telescope. It is believed that imaging and photography is somehow more objective and more accurate than the eye, and this has led to a peculiarcrisis of faith in the human visual system and its amazing processing power. But by analyzing observation s from the past, we can see how accurate visual astronomy really is! Measuring the rotational period of Mars and makingaccurate lunar charts for American astronauts were all done by eye. The book includes sections on how the human visual system works, ho w to view an object through an eyepiece, and how to record observations and keep a scientificnotebook. The book also looks at how to make an astronomical, rather than an artistic, drawing. Finally, everything here will also be of interest to those imagers who wish to make their images more scientifically applicable bycombining the methods and practices of visual astronomy with imaging

Title:From the Universe to the Elementary Particles [electronic resource] : A First Introduction to Cosmology and the Fundamental Interactions
Author(s): Ulrich Ellwanger
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:In this book, the author leads the reader, step by step and without any advanced mathematics, to a clear understanding of the foundations of modern elementary particle physics and cosmology. He also addresses current andcontroversial questions on top ics such as string theory. The book containsgentle introductions to the theories of special and general relativity, and also classical and quantum field theory. The essential aspects of these conceptsare understood with the help of simple calculations for example, the force of gravity as a consequence of the curvature of the space-time. Also treated are the Big Bang, dark matter and dark energy, as well as the presently knowninteractions of elementary particles: electrodynamics, the strong and the weak in teractions including the Higgs boson. Finally, the book sketches as yet speculative theories: Grand Unification theories, supersymmetry, string theory andthe idea of additional dimensions of space-time. Since no higher mathematical or physics expertise is required, the book is also suitable for college and university students at the beginning of their studies. Hobby astronomers andother science enthusiasts seeking a deeper insight than can be found in popular treatments will also appreciate this unique bo ok
