Title:Text Analysis with R for Students of Literature [electronic resource]
Author(s): Matthew L Jockers
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Text Analysis with R for Students of Literature is written with students and scholars of literature in mind but will be applicable to other humanists and social scientists wishing to extend their methodological tool kit toinclude quantitative and com putational approaches to the study of text. Computation provides access to information in text that we simply cannot gather using traditional qualitative methods of close reading and human synthesis. TextAnalysis with R for Students of Literature provides a practical introduction to computational text analysis using the open source programming language R. R is extremely popular throughout the sciences and because of its accessibility,R is now used increasingly in other research areas. Readers begin workin g with text right away and each chapter works through a new technique or process such that readers gain a broad exposure to core R procedures and a basicunderstanding of the possibilities of computational text analysis at both the micro and macro scale. E ach chapter builds on the previous as readers move from small scale microanalysis of single texts to large scalemacroanalysis of text corpora, and each chapter concludes with a set of practice exercises that reinforce and expand upon the chapter lessons. The books focus is on making the technical palatable and making the technicaluseful and immediately gratifying

Title:Visual Lunar and Planetary Astronomy [electronic resource]
Author(s): Paul G Abel
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:With the advent of CCDs and webcams, the focus of amateur astronomy has to some extent shifted from science to art. The object of many amateur astronomers is now to produce stunning images that, although beautiful, are notintended to have scientific merit. Paul Abel has been addressing this issue by promoting visual astronomy wherever possible at talks to astronomical societies, in articles for popular science magazines, and on BBC TVs The Sky atNight. Visual Lunar and Planetary Astronomy is a comp rehensive modern treatment of visual lunar and planetary astronomy, showing that even in the age of space telescopes and interplanetary probes it is still possible to contributescientifically with no more than a moderately priced commercially made astrono mical telescope. It is believed that imaging and photography is somehow more objective and more accurate than the eye, and this has led to a peculiarcrisis of faith in the human visual system and its amazing processing power. But by analyzing observation s from the past, we can see how accurate visual astronomy really is! Measuring the rotational period of Mars and makingaccurate lunar charts for American astronauts were all done by eye. The book includes sections on how the human visual system works, ho w to view an object through an eyepiece, and how to record observations and keep a scientificnotebook. The book also looks at how to make an astronomical, rather than an artistic, drawing. Finally, everything here will also be of interest to those imagers who wish to make their images more scientifically applicable bycombining the methods and practices of visual astronomy with imaging

Title:How Einstein Created Relativity out of Physics and Astronomy [electronic resource]
Author(s): David Topper
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book tracks the history of the theory of relativity through Einsteins life, with in-depth studies of its background as built upon by ideas from earlier scientists. The focus points of Einsteins theory of relativityinclude its development through out his life the origins of his ideas and his indebtedness to the earlier works of Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Mach and others the application of the theory to the birth of modern cosmology and his questfor a unified field theory.

Treading a fine line between the technical and popular (but not shying away from the occasional equation), this book explains the entire range of relativity and weaves an up-to-date biography ofEinstein throughout. The result is an explanation of the world of relativity, based on an extensive journey into earlier physics and a simultaneous voyage into the mind of Einstein, written for the curious and intelligent reader

Title:G.W. Stewart [electronic resource] : Selected Works with Commentaries
Author(s): Misha E Kilmer
Dianne P O'Leary
Date:2010
Publisher:Boston : Birkhuser Boston
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Published in honor of his 70th birthday, this volume explores and celebrates the work of G.W. (Pete) Stewart, a world-renowned expert in computational linear algebra. It is widely accepted that Stewart is the successor to JamesWilkinson, the first gi ant in the field, taking up the perturbation theory research that Wilkinson so ably began and using it as a foundation for algorithmic insights. Stewarts results on rounding error in numerical computationsprovided basic understanding of floating-point com putation. His results on perturbation of eigensystems, pseudo-inverses, least-squares problems, and matrix factorizations are fundamental to numerical practice today. His algorithms forthe singular value decomposition, updating and downdating matrix facto rizations, and the eigenproblem broke new ground and are still widely used in an increasing number of applications. Stewarts papers, widely cited, arecharacterized by elegance in theorems and algorithms and clear, concise, and beautiful exposition. His si x popular textbooks are excellent sources of knowledge and history. Stewart is a member of the National Academy of Engineering andhas received numerous additional honors, including the Bauer Prize. Key features of this volume include: * Forty-four of Stew arts most influential research papers in two subject areas: matrix algorithms and rounding and perturbationtheory * A biography of Stewart * A complete list of Stewarts publications, students, and honors * Selected photographs * Commentaries on Stewarts w orks in collaboration with leading experts in the field G.W. Stewart: SelectedWorks with Commentaries will appeal to graduate students, practitioners, and researchers in computational linear algebra and the history of mathematics

Title:The Hands-On Guide For Science Communicators [electronic resource] A Step-By-Step Approach to Public Outreach
Author(s): Lars Lindberg Christensen
Date:2007
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Lars Lindberg Christensen is a science communication specialist and works in Munich, Germany, as head of communication for the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope in Europe. Many people know something about communication it isafter all an innate human a bility but a full comprehension of how to do science communication effectively is not acquired easily. This Guide touches upon all aspects of science communication, revealing a tightly interwoven fabricof issues: product types, target groups, written com munication, visual communication, validation processes, practices of efficient workflow, distribution, promotion, advertising and much more. New science communicators will find thisGuide both helpful and inspirational. I am overwhelmed at how thorough and how well thought-through this book is. Even with my regular relationships with popular communication and with public relations officers, I hadnt realizedhow well documented the field could be until I saw it done here. -Jay M. Pasachoff, Williams College, President, IAU Commission on Education and Development, author of The Cosmos: Astronomy in the New Millennium and The CompleteIdiots Guide to the Sun I would have expected a high standard from a public outreach scientist at the European Space Agency, but this soars way above the normal standard of competence. I have certainly learned a great deal fromthis guide. It deserves a wide readership among science communicators. -Simon Mitton, Author of Conflict in the Cosmos: Fred Hoyles Life in Science and Edit or of The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy Christensen uses clearprinciples and well-chosen examples, along with tables, diagrams, and even a press release visibility scale to convey the art and science of Science Communication in an authoritative and illuminating manner. -Stephen P. Maran, PressOfficer, AAS, Editor, The Astronomy and Astrophysics Encyclopedia This book is very well presented, in a good-humored style, with an ab
