Title:Analysis of Neural Data [electronic resource]
Author(s): Robert E Kass
Uri T Eden
Emery N Brown
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Continual improvements in data collection and processing have had a huge impact on brain research, producing data sets that are often large and complicated. By emphasizing a few fundamental principles, and a handful of ubiquitoustechniques, Analysis of Neural Data provides a unified treatment of analytical methods that have become essential for contemporary researchers. Throughout the book ideas are illustrated with more than 100 examples drawn from theliterature, ranging from electrophysiology, to n euroimaging, to behavior. By demonstrating the commonality among various statistical approaches the authors provide the crucial tools for gaining knowledge from diverse types of data.Aimed at experimentalists with only high-school level mathematics, as we ll as computationally-oriented neuroscientists who have limited familiarity with statistics, Analysis of Neural Data serves as both a self-contained introductionand a reference work

Title:Natural Fabrications [electronic resource] : Science, Emergence and Consciousness
Author(s): William Seager
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The spectacular success of the scientific enterprise over the last four hundred years has led to the promise of an all encompassing vision of the natural world. In this elegant picture, everything we observe is based upon just afew fundamental proces ses and entities. The almost infinite variety and complexity of the world is thus the product of emergence. But the concept of emergence is fraught with controversy and confusion. This book ponders the question ofhow emergence should be understood within the scientific picture, and whether a complete vision of the world can be attained that includes consciousness

Note:In this accessible overview of current knowledge, an expert team of editors and authors describe experimental approaches to consciousness. These approaches are shedding light on some of the hitherto unknown aspects ofthedistinct states of human consc iousness, including the waking state, different states of sleep and dreaming, meditation and more. The book presents the latest research studies by the contributing authors, whose specialities spanneuroscience, neurology, biomedical engineering, clinical psychology and psychophysiology, psychosocial medicine and anthropology.Overall this anthologyprovides the reader with a clear picture of howdifferent states ofconsciousness can be defined, experimentally measured and analysed.A future byproduct of this k nowledge may beanticipated inthe development of systematic corrective treatments for many disorders and pathological problems ofconsciousness

Title:Auditory and Visual Sensations [electronic resource]
Author(s): Yoichi Ando
Date:2010
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Professor Yoichi Ando, acoustic architectural designer of the Kirishima International Concert Hall in Japan, presents a comprehensive rational-scientific approach to designing performance spaces. His theory is based on systematicpsychoacoustical obse rvations of spatial hearing and listener preferences, whose neuronal correlates are observed in the neurophysiology of the human brain. A correlation-based model of neuronal signal processing in the centralauditory system is proposed in which temporal sen sations (pitch, timbre, loudness, duration) are represented by an internal autocorrelation representation, and spatial sensations (sound location, size, diffuseness related toenvelopment) are represented by an internal interaural crosscorrelation function . Together these two internal central auditory representations account for the basic auditory qualities that are relevant for listening to music and speechin indoor performance spaces. Observed psychological and neurophysiological commonalities between au ditory and visual sensations and preference patterns are presented and discussed. This book thus spans the disciplines of physics, acoustics, psychology, neurophysiology, and music production, thereby blending science, engineering, and art

Title:Coordination: Neural, Behavioral and Social Dynamics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Armin Fuchs
Viktor K Jirsa
Date:2008
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:One of the most striking features of Coordination Dynamics is its interdisciplinary character. The problems we are trying to solve in this field range from behavioral phenomena of interlimb coordination and coordination betweenstimuli and movements ( perception-action tasks) through neural activation patterns that can be observed during these tasks to clinical applications and social behavior. It is not surprising that close collaboration among scientistsfrom different fields as psychology, kinesiolog y, neurology and even physics are imperative to deal with the enormous difficulties we are facing when we try to understand a system as complex as the human brain. The chapters in thisvolume are not simply write-ups of the lectures given by the experts at the meeting but are written in a way that they give sufficient introductory information to be comprehensible and useful for all interested scientists andstudents
