Title:Software Reliability Modeling [electronic resource] : Fundamentals and Applications
Author(s): Shigeru Yamada
Date:2014
Publisher:Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Software reliability is one of the most important characteristics of software product quality. Its measurement and management technologies during the software product life cycle are essential to produce and maintainquality/reliable software systems. Part 1 of this book introduces several aspects of software reliability modeling and its applications. Hazard rate and nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) models are investigated particularly forquantitative software reliability assessment. Further, impe rfect debugging and software availability models are discussed with reference to incorporating practical factors of dynamic software behavior. Three software managementproblems are presented as application technologies of software reliability models: the optimal software release problem, the statistical testing-progress control, and the optimal testing-effort allocation problem. Part 2 of the bookdescribes several recent developments in software reliability modeling and their applications as quantitative techniques for software quality/reliability measurement and assessment. The discussion includes a quality engineeringanalysis of human factors affecting software reliability during the design review phase, which is the upper stream of software development , as well as software reliability growth models based on stochastic differential equations anddiscrete calculus during the testing phase, which is the lower stream. The final part of the book provides an illustration of quality-oriented software managemen t analysis by applying the multivariate analysis method and the existingsoftware reliability growth models to actual process monitoring data

Title:Optically Active Charge Traps and Chemical Defects in Semiconducting Nanocrystals Probed by Pulsed Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance [electronic resource]
Author(s): Kipp van Schooten
Date:2013
Publisher:Heidelberg : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Colloidal nanocrystals show much promise as an optoelectronics architecture due to facile control over electronic properties afforded by chemical control of size, shape, and heterostructure. Unfortunately, realizing practicaldevices has been forestal led by the ubiquitous presence of charge trap states which compete with band-edge excitons and result in limited device efficiencies. Little is known about the defining characteristics of these traps, making engineered strategies for their removal difficul t. This thesis outlines pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance as a powerful spectroscopy of the chemical and electronic nature of these deleterious states. Counterintuitivefor such heavy atom materials, some trap species possess very long spin cohe rence lifetimes (up to 1.6 s). This quality allows use of the trapped charge's magnetic moment as a local probe of the trap state itself and its localenvironment. Beyond state characterization, this spectroscopy can demonstrate novel effects in heterostru ctured nanocrystals, such as spatially-remote readout of spin information and the coherent control of light harvesting yield

Frauke Kreuter
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Survey sampling is fundamentally an applied field. The goal in this book is to put an array of tools at the fingertips of practitioners by explaining approaches long used by survey statisticians, illustrating how existingsoftware can be used to solve survey problems, and developing some specialized software where needed. This book serves at least three audiences: (1) Students seeking a more in-depth understanding of applied sampling either through asecond semester-long course or by way of a supplemen tary reference (2) Survey statisticians searching for practical guidance on how to apply concepts learned in theoretical or applied sampling courses and (3) Social scientists andother survey practitioners who desire insight into the statistical thinking a nd steps taken to design, select, and weight random survey samples. Several survey data sets are used to illustrate how to design samples, to make estimatesfrom complex surveys for use in optimizing the sample allocation, and to calculate weights. Realist ic survey projects are used to demonstrate the challenges and provide a context for the solutions. The book covers several topics thateither are not included or are dealt with in a limited way in other texts. These areas include: sample size computations for multistage designs power calculations related to surveys mathematical programming for sample allocation in amulti-criteria optimization setting nuts and bolts of area probability sampling multiphase designs quality control of survey operations and sta tistical software for survey sampling and estimation. An associated R package,PracTools, contains a number of specialized functions for sample size and other calculations. The data sets used in the book are also available in PracTools, so that the reader may replicate the examples or perform further analyses.Richard Valliant is a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research of the University of Michigan and at the Joint Program in S

Note:This fourth issue on progress in turbulence is based on the fourth ITI conference (ITI interdisciplinary turbulence initiative), which took place in Bertinoro, North Italy. Leading researchers from the engineering andphysical sciences presented lates t results in turbulence research. Basic as well as applied research is driven by the rather notorious difficult and essentially unsolved problem of turbulence. In this collection of contributions clearprogress can be seen in different aspects, ranging fro m new quality of numerical simulations to new concepts of experimental investigations and new theoretical developments. The importance of turbulence is shown for a wide range ofapplications including: combustion, energy, flow control, urban flows, are few examples found in this volume. A motivation was to bring fundamentals of turbulence in connection with renewable energy. This lead us to add a special topicrelevant to the impact of turbulence on the wind energy conversion. The structure of the present b ook is as such that contributions have been bundled according to covering topics i.e. I Basic Turbulence Aspects, II Particle LadenFlows, III Modeling and Simulations, IV, Experimental Methods, V Special Flows, VI Atmospheric Boundary Layer, VII Boundary Layer, VIII Wind Energy and IX Convection. This book is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Tim Nickels. Shortlyafter giving an invited lecture at the 4th ITI conference, the turbulence community lost a world-class scientist, a friend and devoted family man

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book is a comprehensive source of the fundamentals, process parameters, instrumental components and applications of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The effect of multiple pulses on material ablation, plasmadynamics and plasma emissi on is presented. A heuristic plasma modeling allows to simulate complex experimental plasma spectra. These methods and findings form the basis for a variety of applications to perform quantitativemulti-element analysis with LIBS. These application potenti als of LIBS have really boosted in the last years ranging from bulk analysis of metallic alloys and non-conducting materials, via spatially resolved analysis and depthprofiling covering measuring objects in all physical states: gaseous, liquid and solid. Dedicated chapters present LIBS investigations for these tasks with special emphasis on the methodical and instrumental concepts as well as theoptimization strategies for a quantitative analysis. Requirements, concepts, design and characteristic features of LIBS instruments are described covering laboratory systems, inspections systems for in-line process control, mobilesystems and remote systems. State-of-the-art industrial applications of LIBS systems are presented demonstrating the benefits of inline p rocess control for improved process guiding and quality assurance purposes

Title:Iris Runge [electronic resource] : A Life at the Crossroads of Mathematics, Science, and Industry
Author(s): Renate Tobies
Date:2012
Publisher:Basel : Springer Basel
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book concerns the origins of mathematical problem solving at the internationally active Osram and Telefunken Corporations during the golden years of broadcasting and electron tube research. The woman scientist Iris Runge, who received an interdis ciplinary education at the University of Gttingen, was long employed as the sole mathematical authority at these companies in Berlin. It will be shown how mathematical connections were made between statisticsand quality control, and between physical-chemi cal models and the actual problems of mass production. The organization of industrial laboratories, the relationship between theoretical and experimental work, and the role ofmathematicians in these settings will also be explained. By investigating the so cial, economic, and political conditions that unfolded from the time of the German Empire until the end of the Second World War, the book hopes to build abridge between specialized fields mathematics and engineering and the general culture of a particul ar era. It hopes, furthermore, to build a bridge between the history of science and industry, on the one hand, and the fields ofGender and Womens Studies on the other. Finally, by examining the life and work of numerous industrial researchers, insight wil l be offered into the conditions that enabled a woman to achieve a prominent professional position duringa time when women were typically excluded from the scientific workforce
