Title:Resonance Effects of Excitons and Electrons [electronic resource] : Basics and Applications
Author(s): Ion Geru
Dieter Suter
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book presents the various types of resonance effects on excitons, biexcitons and the local electronic centers (LEC) in solids, such as paramagnetic and paraelectric resonances on excitons, exciton acoustic resonance at intra-and interband transi tions, radio-optical double resonance on excitons, hole-nuclear double resonance on localized biexcitons, ENDOR and acoustic ENDOR on LEC. The criteria for the generation of coherent photons, phonons and magnons byexcitons are explained. The interactions of excitons and biexcitons with paramagnetic centers and nuclear spins, the indirect interaction between the PC through a field of excitons as well as the quasienergy spectrum of excitons andspin systems are discussed. It is proved that the interactionof paramagnetic centers with excitons increases the spin relaxation rate of paramagneticcenters in comparison with the case of their interaction with free carriers. Thegiant magneto-opticaleffects in semi-magnetic semiconductors are theoretically interpreted . In recent years, a new perspective has been added to these systems and their interactions: they can be used for storing and processinginformation in the form of quantum bits (qubits), the building blocks of quantum computers. The basics of this emerging technology are explained and examples of demonstration-type quantum computers based on localized spins in solidsare discussed

Title:Statistical Approach to Quantum Field Theory [electronic resource] : An Introduction
Author(s): Andreas Wipf
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Over the past few decades the powerful methods of statistical physics and Euclidean quantum field theory have moved closer together, with common tools based on the use of path integrals. The interpretation of Euclidean fieldtheories as particular sys tems of statistical physics has opened up new avenues for understanding strongly coupled quantum systems or quantum field theories at zero or finite temperatures. Accordingly, the first chapters of this bookcontain a self-contained introduction to path in tegrals in Euclidean quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. The resulting high-dimensional integrals can be estimated with the help of Monte Carlo simulations based on Markovprocesses. The most commonly used algorithms are presented in detail so as to prepare the reader for the use of high-performance computers as an experimental tool for this burgeoning field of theoretical physics. Several chaptersare then devoted to an introduction to simple lattice field theories and a variety of spin systems wi th discrete and continuous spins, where the ubiquitous Ising model serves as an ideal guide for introducing the fascinating area ofphase transitions. As an alternative to the lattice formulation of quantum field theories, variants of the flexible renormal ization group methods are discussed in detail. Since, according to our present-day knowledge, all fundamentalinteractions in nature are described by gauge theories, the remaining chapters of the book deal with gauge theories without and with matter. This text is based on course-tested notes for graduate students and, as such, its style isessentially pedagogical, requiring only some basics of mathematics, statistical physics, and quantum field theory. Yet it also contains some more sophisticated concepts w hich may be useful to researchers in the field. Each chapter endswith a number of problems guiding the reader to a deeper understanding of some of the material presented in the main text a

Title:Multi-Photon Quantum Information Science and Technology in Integrated Optics [electronic resource]

Note:Photons are an attractive option for testing fundamental quantum physics and developing new quantum-enhanced technology, including highly advanced computers and simulators, as well as precision sensing beyond shot-noise.Traditionally, bulk optical co mponents have been bolted onto optical benches to realize metre-scale quantum circuits. However this approach is ultimately proving unwieldy for increasing the complexity and for scaling up to practicalquantum technologies based on photons. The work prese nted here demonstrates a series of quantum photonic devices based on waveguide circuits embedded in miniature monolithic chips. This represents a paradigm shift in the underlyingarchitecture of quantum optics and provides key building blocks for all-optic al and hybrid quantum technologies

Title:Quantum Walks and Search Algorithms [electronic resource]
Author(s): Renato Portugal
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book addresses an interesting area of quantum computation called quantum walks, which play an important role in building quantum algorithms, in particular search algorithms. Quantum walks are the quantum analogue of classicalrandom walks. It is known that quantum computers have great power for searching unsorted databases. This power extends to many kinds of searches, particularly to the problem of finding a specific location in a spatial layout, which canbe modeled by a graph. The goal is to fi nd a specific node knowing that the particle uses the edges to jump from one node to the next. This book is self-contained with main topics that include: Grover's algorithm, describing itsgeometrical interpretation and evolution by means of the spectral d ecomposition of the evolution operater Analytical solutions of quantum walks on important graphs like line, cycles, two-dimensional lattices, and hypercubes usingFourier transforms Quantum walks on generic graphs, describing methods to calculate the limit ing distribution and mixing time Spatial search algorithms, with emphasis on the abstract search algorithm (the two-dimensional lattice isused as an example) Szedgedy's quantum-walk model and a natural definition of quantum hitting time (the complete grap h is used as an example) The reader will benefit from the pedagogical aspects of the book, learning faster and withmore ease than would be possible from the primary research literature. Exercises and references further deepen the reader's understanding, a nd guidelines for the use of computer programs to simulate the evolution of quantum walks arealso provided

Title:Isotope-Based Quantum Information [electronic resource]
Author(s): Vladimir G. Plekhanov
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The present book provides to the main ideas and techniques of the rapid progressing field of quantum information and quantum computation using isotope - mixed materials. It starts with an introduction to the isotope physics andthen describes of the i sotope - based quantum information and quantum computation. The ability to manipulate and control electron and/or nucleus spin in semiconductor devices provides a new route to expand the capabilities of inorganicsemiconductor-based electronics and to desi gn innovative devices with potential application in quantum computing. One of the major challenges towards these objectives is to develop semiconductor-based systems and architectures in whichthe spatial distribution of spins and their properties can be c ontrolled. For instance, to eliminate electron spin decoherence resulting from hyperfine interaction due to nuclear spin background, isotopically controlled devices areneeded (i.e., nuclear spin-depleted). In other emerging concepts, the control of the sp atial distribution of isotopes with nuclear spins is a prerequisite to implement the quantum bits (or qbits). Therefore, stable semiconductorisotopes are important elements in the development of solid-state quantum information. There are not only differen t algorithms of quantum computation discussed but also the different models of quantum computers are presented. Withnumerous illustrations this small book is of great interest for undergraduate students taking courses in mesoscopic physics or nanoelectron ics as well as quantum information, and academic and industrial researches working in thisfield

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book covers all topics in mechanics from elementary Newtonian mechanics, the principles of canonical mechanics and rigid body mechanics to relativistic mechanics and nonlinear dynamics. It was among the first textbooks toinclude dynamical system s and deterministic chaos in due detail. As compared to the previous editions the present fifth edition is updated and revised with more explanations, additional examples and sections on Noether's theorem.Symmetries and invariance principles, the basic ge ometric aspects of mechanics as well as elements of continuum mechanics also play an important role. The book will enable the reader to develop general principles from which equationsof motion follow, to understand the importance of canonical mechanics an d of symmetries as a basis for quantum mechanics, and to get practice in using general theoretical concepts and tools that are essential for all branches ofphysics. The book contains more than 120 problems with complete solutions, as well as some practica l examples which make moderate use of personal computers. This will be appreciated in particular by students using this textbook toaccompany lectures on mechanics. The book ends with some historical notes on scientists who made important contributions to the development of mechanics

Title:The Physical Basis of the Direction of Time [electronic resource]
Author(s): H. Dieter Zeh
Date:2007
Edition:5th edition
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This thoroughly revised 5th edition of Zeh's classic text investigates irreversible phenomena and their foundation in classical, quantum and cosmological settings. It includes new sections on the meaning of probabilities in acosmological context, irr eversible aspects of quantum computers, and various consequences of the expansion of the Universe. Many other sections have been rewritten. In particular, the book contains an analysis of the physical conceptof time, a detailed treatment of radiation damp ing as well as extended sections on quantum entanglement and decoherence, arrows of time hidden in various interpretations of quantum theory, and the emergence of time in quantum gravity. Both physicists and philosophers of science will find in this book a magnificent survey and a concise, technically sophisticated, up-to-date discussion which shows fine sensitivity to crucial conceptual subtleties. The discussion islucid and intuitive without glossing over the important details. Max Tegmark, MIT

Title:High-Dimensional Chaotic and Attractor Systems [electronic resource] : A Comprehensive Introduction
Author(s): Vladimir G Ivancevic
Tijana T Ivancevic
Date:2007
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This is a graduatelevel monographic textbook devoted to understanding, prediction and control of highdimensional chaotic and attractor systems of real life. The objective of the book is to provide the serious reader with aserious scientific tool that will enable the actual performance of competitive research in highdimensional chaotic and attractor dynamics. The book has nine Chapters. The first Chapter gives a textbook-like introduction into thelow-dimensional attractors and chaos. This Chapter has an inspirational character, similar to other books on nonlinear dynamics and deterministic chaos. The second Chapter deals with Smales topological transformations of stretching, squeezing and folding (of the systems phasespace), developed for the purpose o f chaos theory. The third Chapter is devoted to Poincar's 3-body problem and basic techniques of chaos control, mostly of Ott-Grebogi-Yorke type. Thefourth Chapter is a review of both Landaus and topological phase transition theory, as well as Hakens syne rgetics. The fifth Chapter deals with phase synchronization in high-dimensional chaotic systems. The sixth Chapter presentshigh-tech Josephson junctions, the basic components for the future quantum computers. The seventh Chapter deals with fractals and fr actional Hamiltonian dynamics. The 8th Chapter gives a review of modern techniques for dealing withturbulence, ranging from the parameterspace of the Lorenz attractor to the Lie symmetries. The last, 9th, Chapter attempts to give a brief on the cutting ed ge techniques of the high-dimensional nonlinear dynamics (includinggeometries, gauges and solitons, culminating into the chaos field theory)

Title:Compendium of Theoretical Physics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Armin Wachter
Henning Hoeber
Date:2006
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, and Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics comprise the canonical undergraduate curriculum of theoretical physics. In Compendium of Theoretical Physics, Armin Wachter and HenningHoeber offer a concise, rigorous and structured overview that will be invaluable for students preparing for their qualifying examinations, readers needing a supplement to standard textbooks, and research or industrial physicistsseeking a bridge between extensive textbooks and f ormula books. The authors take an axiomatic-deductive approach to each topic, starting the discussion of each theory with its fundamental equations. By subsequently deriving the variousphysical relationships and laws in logical rather than chronological o rder, and by using a consistent presentation and notation throughout, they emphasize the connections between the individual theories. The readers understanding isthen reinforced with exercises, solutions and topic summaries. Unique Features: Every topic i s reviewed axiomatically-deductively and then reinforced through exercises, solutions and summaries Each subchapter ends with a set ofapplications, making the Compendium an ideal review of theoretical physics for physicists working in industry or research A Mathematical Appendix covers vector operations, integral theorems, partial differential quotients, completefunction systems, Fourier analysis, Bessel functions, spherical Bessel functions, Legendre functions, Legendre polynomials and spherical harmonic s Armin Wachter holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the John von Neumann Institute for Computing(NIC) / Research Centre of Jlich, Germany. His research interests include theoretical elementary particle physics, heavy quark physics, heavy meson spectroscopy, alg orithms on parallel computers, and lattice gauge theory. He ispresently writing a textbook on relativistic quantum mechanics for Springer. Henning Hoeber received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Univ

Title:Advanced Visual Quantum Mechanics [electronic resource]
Author(s): Bernd Thaller
Date:2005
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Advanced Visual Quantum Mechanics is a systematic effort to investigate and to teach quantum mechanics with the aid of computer-generated animations. It is a self-contained textbook that combines selected topics from atomicphysics (spherical symmetry , the hydrogen atom, and particles with spin) with an introduction to quantum information theory (qubits, EPR paradox, teleportation, quantum computers). It explores relativistic quantum mechanics and thestrange behavior of Dirac equation solutions. A ser ies of appendices covers important topics from perturbation and scattering theory. The book places an emphasis on ideas and concepts, with a fair to moderate amount of mathematicalrigor. Though this book stands alone, it can also be paired with Thaller Vi sual Quantum Mechanics to form a comprehensive course in quantum mechanics. The software for the first book earned the European Academic Software Award 2000 foroutstanding innovation in its field
