They play a key role in a variety of research areas, such ascombinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms, computational complexity, graph theory, geometry, real algebraic geometry and quantum computing. This book is an introduction to selected aspects of semidefinite programming and itsuse in approximation algorithms. It covers the b asics but also a significant amount of recent and more advanced material. There are many computational problems, such as MAXCUT, for which one cannot reasonably expect to obtain anexact solution efficiently, and in such case, one has to settle for approxi mate solutions. For MAXCUT and its relatives, exciting recent results suggest that semidefinite programming is probably the ultimate tool. Indeed, assuming theUnique Games Conjecture, a plausible but as yet unproven hypothesis, it was shown that for these problems, known algorithms based on semidefinite programming deliver the best possible approximation ratios among all polynomial-timealgorithms. This book follows the semidefinite side of these developments, presenting some of the main ideas behind appr oximation algorithms based on semidefinite programming. Note:Casimir effects serve as primary examples of directly observable manifestations of the nontrivial properties of quantum fields, and as such are attracting increasing interest from quantum field theorists, particle physicists, andcosmologists. Further more, though very weak except at short distances, Casimir forces are universal in the sense that all material objects are subject to them. They are thus also an increasingly important part of the physics ofatom-surface interactions, while in nanotechnolog y they are being investigated not only as contributors to stiction but also as potential mechanisms for actuating micro-electromechanical devices. While the field of Casimirphysics is expanding rapidly, it has reached a level of maturity in some importan t respects: on the experimental side, where most sources of imprecision in force measurements have been identified as well as on the theoretical side,where, for example, semi-analytical and numerical methods for the computation of Casimir forces between b odies of arbitrary shape have been successfully developed. Note:The aim of this book is to show that the probabilistic formalisms of classical statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics can be unified on the basis of a general contextual probabilistic model. By taking into account thedependence of (classical) pr obabilities on contexts (i.e. complexes of physical conditions), one can reproduce all distinct features of quantum probabilities such as the interference of probabilities and the violation of Bellsinequality. Moreover, by starting with a formula for the interference of probabilities (which generalizes the well known classical formula of total probability), one can construct the representation of contextual probabilities bycomplex probability amplitudes or, in the abstract formalism, by normalized vectors of the complex Hilbert space or its hyperbolic generalization. Thus the Hilbert space representation of probabilities can be naturally derived fromclassical probabilistic assumptions. An important chapter of the book critically reviews known no-go theore ms: the impossibility to establish a finer description of micro-phenomena than provided by quantum mechanics and, inparticular, the commonly accepted consequences of Bells theorem (including quantum non-locality). Also, possible applications of the contex tual probabilistic model and its quantum-like representation in complex Hilbert spaces inother fields (e.g. in cognitive science and psychology) are discussed
