Title: | Scattering Amplitudes and Wilson Loops in Twistor Space [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Mathew Richard Bullimore |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Scattering amplitudes are fundamental and rich observables in quantum field theory. Based on the observation that, for massless particles of spin-one or more, scattering amplitudes are much simpler than expected from traditionalFeynman diagram techni ques, the broad aim of this work is to understand and exploit this hidden structure. It uses methods from twistor theory to provide new insights into the correspondence between scattering amplitudes insupersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and null polygonal Wi lson loops. By additionally exploiting the symmetries of the problem, the author succeeds in developing new ways of computing scattering amplitudes |

Note: | The Biaowiea workshops on Geometric Methods in Physics are among the most important meetings in the field. Every year, some 80 to 100 participants from both mathematics and physics join to discuss new developments and toexchange ideas. This volume in cludes contributions by selected speakers at the 30th meeting in 2011 as well as additional review articles and it shows that the workshop remains at the cutting edge of ongoing research. The 2011 meetingfocused on the works of the late Felix A. Berezin ( 19311980) on the occasion of his 80th anniversary as well as on Bogdan Mielnik and Stanisaw Lech Woronowicz on the occasion of their 75th and 70th birthdays, respectively. Thegroundbreaking work of Berezin is discussed from todays perspective by presentin g an overview of his ideas and their impact on further developments. He was active in representation theory, general concepts of quantization andcoherent states, supersymmetry and supermanifolds, among other fields. Another focus lies on the accomplishmen ts of Bogdan Mielnik and Stanisaw Lech Woronowicz. Mielniks geometric approach to the description of quantum mixedstates, the method of quantum state manipulation and their important implications for quantum computing and quantum entanglement are discusse d, as are the intricacies of the quantum time operator. Woronowicz fruitful notion of acompact quantum group and related topics are also addressed |

Title: | Isotope-Based Quantum Information [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |

Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |

Note: | The present book provides to the main ideas and techniques of the rapid progressing field of quantum information and quantum computation using isotope - mixed materials. It starts with an introduction to the isotope physics andthen describes of the i sotope - based quantum information and quantum computation. The ability to manipulate and control electron and/or nucleus spin in semiconductor devices provides a new route to expand the capabilities of inorganicsemiconductor-based electronics and to desi gn innovative devices with potential application in quantum computing. One of the major challenges towards these objectives is to develop semiconductor-based systems and architectures in whichthe spatial distribution of spins and their properties can be c ontrolled. For instance, to eliminate electron spin decoherence resulting from hyperfine interaction due to nuclear spin background, isotopically controlled devices areneeded (i.e., nuclear spin-depleted). In other emerging concepts, the control of the sp atial distribution of isotopes with nuclear spins is a prerequisite to implement the quantum bits (or qbits). Therefore, stable semiconductorisotopes are important elements in the development of solid-state quantum information. There are not only differen t algorithms of quantum computation discussed but also the different models of quantum computers are presented. Withnumerous illustrations this small book is of great interest for undergraduate students taking courses in mesoscopic physics or nanoelectron ics as well as quantum information, and academic and industrial researches working in thisfield |

Title: | Quantum Triangulations [electronic resource] : Moduli Spaces, Strings, and Quantum Computing |

Note: | Research on polyhedral manifolds often points to unexpected connections between very distinct aspects of Mathematics and Physics. In particular triangulated manifolds play quite a distinguished role in such settings as Riemannmoduli space theory, str ings and quantum gravity, topological quantum field theory, condensed matter physics, and critical phenomena. Not only do they provide a natural discrete analogue to the smooth manifolds on which physicaltheories are typically formulated, but their appear ance is rather often a consequence of an underlying structure which naturally calls into play non-trivial aspects of representation theory, of complex analysis and topology in a waywhich makes manifest the basic geometric structures of the physical intera ctions involved. Yet, in most of the existing literature, triangulated manifolds are still merely viewed as a convenient discretization of a given physicaltheory to make it more amenable for numerical treatment. The motivation for these lectures notes is thus to provide an approachable introduction to this topic, emphasizing the conceptual aspects, and probing, through a set of casesstudies, the connection between triangulated manifolds and quantum physics to the deepest. This volume addresses applied m athematicians and theoretical physicists working in the field of quantum geometry and its applications. |

Note: | Born after World War II, large-scale experimental high-energy physics (HEP) has found itself limited ever since by available accelerator, detector and computing technologies. Accordingly, HEP has made significant contributions tothe development of th ese fields, more often than not driving their innovations. The invention of the World Wide Web at CERN is merely the best-known example out of many. This book is the first comprehensive account to trace the historyof this pioneering spirit in the field of computing technologies. It covers everything up to and including the present-day handling of the huge demands imposed upon grid and distributed computing by full-scale LHC operations -operations which have for years involved many thousands of collaborati ng members worldwide and accordingly provide the original and natural testbed for grid computing concepts. This book takes the reader on a guided tour encompassingall relevant topics, including programming languages, software engineering, large databases, the Web, and grid- and cloud computing. The important issue of intellectual property regulations for distributed software engineering andcomputing is also addressed. Aptly, the book closes with a visionary chapter of what may lie ahead. Approachable and requiring only basic understanding of physics and computer sciences, this book is intended for both education andresearch |

Title: | Approximation Algorithms and Semidefinite Programming [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Bernd Grtner Jiri Matousek |
Date: | 2012 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg |
Size: | 1 online resource |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Semidefinite programs constitute one of the largest classes of optimization problems that can be solved with reasonable efficiency - both in theory and practice. They play a key role in a variety of research areas, such ascombinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms, computational complexity, graph theory, geometry, real algebraic geometry and quantum computing. This book is an introduction to selected aspects of semidefinite programming and itsuse in approximation algorithms. It covers the b asics but also a significant amount of recent and more advanced material. There are many computational problems, such as MAXCUT, for which one cannot reasonably expect to obtain anexact solution efficiently, and in such case, one has to settle for approxi mate solutions. For MAXCUT and its relatives, exciting recent results suggest that semidefinite programming is probably the ultimate tool. Indeed, assuming theUnique Games Conjecture, a plausible but as yet unproven hypothesis, it was shown that for these problems, known algorithms based on semidefinite programming deliver the best possible approximation ratios among all polynomial-timealgorithms. This book follows the semidefinite side of these developments, presenting some of the main ideas behind appr oximation algorithms based on semidefinite programming. It develops the basic theory of semidefiniteprogramming, presents one of the known efficient algorithms in detail, and describes the principles of some others. It also includes applications, focusing on approximation algorithms |

Title: | Casimir Physics [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Diego Dalvit Peter Milonni David Roberts Felipe da Rosa |
Date: | 2011 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Casimir effects serve as primary examples of directly observable manifestations of the nontrivial properties of quantum fields, and as such are attracting increasing interest from quantum field theorists, particle physicists, andcosmologists. Further more, though very weak except at short distances, Casimir forces are universal in the sense that all material objects are subject to them. They are thus also an increasingly important part of the physics ofatom-surface interactions, while in nanotechnolog y they are being investigated not only as contributors to stiction but also as potential mechanisms for actuating micro-electromechanical devices. While the field of Casimirphysics is expanding rapidly, it has reached a level of maturity in some importan t respects: on the experimental side, where most sources of imprecision in force measurements have been identified as well as on the theoretical side, where, for example, semi-analytical and numerical methods for the computation of Casimir forces between b odies of arbitrary shape have been successfully developed. This book is, then, a timely and comprehensive guide to the essence ofCasimir (and Casimir-Polder) physics that will have lasting value, serving the dual purpose of an introduction and reference t o the field. While this volume is not intended to be a unified textbook, but rather a collection of largelyindependent chapters written by prominent experts in the field, the detailed and carefully written articles adopt a style that should appeal to non- specialist researchers in the field as well as to a broader audience of graduatestudents |

Note: | This monograph is a unified presentation of several theories of finding explicit formulas for heat kernels for both elliptic and sub-elliptic operators. These kernels are important in the theory of parabolic operators becausethey describe the distrib ution of heat on a given manifold as well as evolution phenomena and diffusion processes. The work is divided into four main parts: Part I treats the heat kernel by traditional methods, such as the Fouriertransform method, paths integrals, variational cal culus, and eigenvalue expansion Part II deals with the heat kernel on nilpotent Lie groups and nilmanifolds Part III examines Laguerre calculus applications Part IV uses the methodof pseudo-differential operators to describe heat kernels. Topics and featu res: comprehensive treatment from the point of view of distinct branches of mathematics, such as stochastic processes, differential geometry, specialfunctions, quantum mechanics, and PDEs novelty of the work is in the diverse methods used to compute heat kernels for elliptic and sub-elliptic operators most of the heat kernels computable by means of elementary functions arecovered in the work self-contained material on stochastic processes and variational methods is included. Heat Kernels for Elliptic and Sub-elliptic Operators is an ideal reference for graduate students, researchers in pure andapplied mathematics, and theoretical physicists interested in understanding different ways of approaching evolution operators |

Note: | Learning Solid State Physics involves a certain degree of maturity, since it involves tying together diverse concepts from many areas of physics. The objective is to understand, in a basic way, how solid materials behave. To dothis one needs both a g ood physical and mathematical background. One definition of Solid State Physics is it is the study of the physical (e.g. the electrical, dielectric, magnetic, elastic, and thermal) properties of solids in termsof basic physical laws. In one sense, Solid S tate Physics is more like chemistry than some other branches of physics because it focuses on common properties of large classes of materials. It is typical that Solid State Physicsemphasizes how physics properties link to electronic structure. We have re tained the term Solid Modern solid state physics came of age in the late thirties and forties and is now is part of condensed matter physics which includesliquids, soft materials, and non-crystalline solids. This solid state/condensed matter physics book begins with three broad areas: (1) How and why atoms bind together to form solids, (2) Lattice vibrations and phonons, and (3)Electrons in solids. It then applies these areas to (4) Interactions especially of electrons with phonons, (5) Metals, the Fermi surface and alloys, (6) Semiconductors, (7) Magnetism, (8) Superconductivity, (9) Dielectrics andferroelectrics, (10) Optical properties, (11) Defects, and (12) Certain other modern topics such as layered materials, quantum Hall effect, mesoscopics, nanop hysics, and soft condensed matter. For this 2nd addition new material hasbeen added on the evolution of BEC to BCS phenomena, conducting polymers, graphene, highly correlated electrons, iron pnictide superconductors, light emitting diodes, N-V centers, na nomagnetism, negative index of refraction, opticallattices, phase transitions, phononics, photonics, plasmonics, quantum computing, solar cells, spin Hall effect, and spintronics. Note: | In an epoch when particle physics is awaiting a major step forward, the Large Hydron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva will soon be operational. It will collide a beam of high energy protons with another similar beam circulation inthe same 27 km tunnel but in the opposite direction, resulting in the production of many elementary particles some never created in the laboratory before. It is widely expected that the LHC will discover the Higgs boson, the particlewhich supposedly lends masses to all other f undamental particles. In addition, the question as to whether there is some new law of physics at such high energy is likely to be answered through this experiment. The present volumecontains a collection of articles written by international experts, both theoreticians and experimentalists, from India and abroad, which aims to acquaint a non-specialist with some basic issues related to the LHC. At the same time, itis expected to be a useful, rudimentary companion of introductory exposition and technical e xpertise alike, and it is hoped to become unique in its kind. The fact that there is substantial Indian involvement in the entire LHCendeavour, at all levels including fabrication, physics analysis procedures as well as theoretical studies, is also amply brought out in the collection |

Title: | Entanglement and Decoherence [electronic resource] : Foundations and Modern Trends |
Author(s): |
Andreas Buchleitner Carlos Viviescas Markus Tiersch |
Date: | 2009 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Entanglement and (de-)coherence arguably define the central issues of concern in present day quantum information theory. Entanglement being a consequence of the quantum mechanical superposition principle for composite systems, abetter understanding o f the environment-induced destruction of coherent superposition states is required to devise novel strategies for harvesting quantum interference phenomena. The present book collects a series of advanced lectureson the theoretical foundations of this acti ve research field, from mathematical aspects underlying quantum topology to mesoscopic transport theory. All lectures start out from an elementary level and proceed along a steep learningcurve. This makes the material particularly suitable for student sem inars on the more fundamental theoretical aspects of quantum information, and equally useful as supplementary reading for advanced lectures on this topic |

Note: | This textbook on Quantum Electrodynamics is a thorough introductory text providing all necessary mathematical tools together with many examples and worked problems. In their presentation of the subject the authors adopt aheuristic approach based on t he propagator formalism. The latter is introduced in the first two chapters in both its nonrelativistic and relativistic versions. Subsequently, a large number of scattering and radiation processesinvolving electrons, positrons, and photons are introduced and their theoretical treatment is presented in great detail. Higher order processes and renormalization are also included. The book concludes with a discussion of two-particlestates and the interaction of spinless bosons. This completely revised and cor rected new edition provides several additions to enable deeper insight in formalism and application of quantum electrodynamics |

Note: | Number Theory in Science and Communication is a well-known introduction for non-mathematicians to this fascinating and useful branch of applied mathematics . It stresses intuitive understanding rather than abstract theory andhighlights important conc epts such as continued fractions, the golden ratio, quadratic residues and Chinese remainders, trapdoor functions, pseudoprimes and primitive elements. Their applications to problems in the real world are oneof the main themes of the book. This revised fi fth edition is augmented by recent advances in coding theory, permutations and derangements and a chapter in quantum cryptography. From reviews of earlier editions I continue to find[Schroeders] Number Theory a goldmine of valuable information. It is a m arvellous book, in touch with the most recent applications of number theory and written with great clarity and humor. Note: | With contributions by many of today's leading quantum physicists, philosophers and historians, including three Nobel laureates, this comprehensive A to Z of quantum physics provides a lucid understanding of the key concepts ofquantum theory and exper iment. It covers technical and interpretational aspects alike, and includes both traditional topics and newer areas such as quantum information and its relatives. The central concepts that have shapedcontemporary understanding of the quantum world are cle arly defined, with illustrations where helpful, and discussed at a level suitable for undergraduate and graduate students of physics, history of science, and philosophy of physics. All articles share three main aims: (1) to provide a clear definition and u nderstanding of the term concerned (2) where possible, to trace the historical origins of the concept and (3) to provide a small but optimal selection ofreferences to the most relevant literature, including pertinent historical studies. Also discussed are the often contentious philosophical implications derived from quantum theory and its associated experimental findings. Thiscompendium will be an indispensable resource for all those seeking concise up-to-date information about the many facets of quantum physics |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The theory of directed graphs has developed enormously over recent decades, yet this book (first published in 2000) remains the only book to cover more than a small fraction of the results. New research in the field has made asecond edition a necessi ty. Substantially revised, reorganised and updated, the book now comprises eighteen chapters, carefully arranged in a straightforward and logical manner, with many new results and open problems. As well ascovering the theoretical aspects of the subject, w ith detailed proofs of many important results, the authors present a number of algorithms, and whole chapters are devoted to topics such as branchings, feedback arc and vertex sets, connectivity augmentations, sparse subdigraphs with prescribed connectivit y, and also packing, covering and decompositions of digraphs. Throughout the book, there is a strong focus on applications which include quantum mechanics, bioinformatics, embedded computing, and the travelling salesman problem. Detailed indices and topic- oriented chapters ease navigation, and more than 650 exercises, 170 figures and 150 open problems are included to help immerse thereader in all aspects of the subject. Digraphs is an essential, comprehensive reference for undergraduate and graduate studen ts, and researchers in mathematics, operations research and computer science. It will also prove invaluable tospecialists in related areas, such as meteorology, physics and computational biology. Jrgen Bang-Jensen is a Professor in the Department of Mathe matics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.Gregory Gutin is Professor of Computer Science at Royal Holloway College, University of London, UK |

Note: | The aim of this book is to show that the probabilistic formalisms of classical statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics can be unified on the basis of a general contextual probabilistic model. By taking into account thedependence of (classical) pr obabilities on contexts (i.e. complexes of physical conditions), one can reproduce all distinct features of quantum probabilities such as the interference of probabilities and the violation of Bellsinequality. Moreover, by starting with a formula for the interference of probabilities (which generalizes the well known classical formula of total probability), one can construct the representation of contextual probabilities bycomplex probability amplitudes or, in the abstract formalism, by normalized vectors of the complex Hilbert space or its hyperbolic generalization. Thus the Hilbert space representation of probabilities can be naturally derived fromclassical probabilistic assumptions. An important chapter of the book critically reviews known no-go theore ms: the impossibility to establish a finer description of micro-phenomena than provided by quantum mechanics and, inparticular, the commonly accepted consequences of Bells theorem (including quantum non-locality). Also, possible applications of the contex tual probabilistic model and its quantum-like representation in complex Hilbert spaces inother fields (e.g. in cognitive science and psychology) are discussed |

Title: | Quantum Entropies [electronic resource] : Dynamics, Information and Complexity |
Author(s): |
Fabio Benatti |
Date: | 2009 |
Edition: | 1 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands |
Size: | 1 online resource |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The leading theme of the book is complexity in quantum dynamics. This issue is addressed by comparison with the classical ergodic, information and algorithmic complexity theories. Of particular importance is the notion ofKolmogorov-Sinai dynamical en tropy and of its inequivalent quantum extensions formulated by Connes, Narnhofer and Thirring on one hand and Alicki and Fannes on the other. Their connections with extensions to quantum systems ofKolmogorov-Chaitin-Solomonoff algorithmic complexity theor y is also presented. The technical tools employed are those of the algebraic approach to quantum statistical mechanics which offers a unifying view of classical and quantumdynamical systems. Proofs and examples are provided in order to make the presentati on self consistent |

Note: | Advanced Quantum Mechanics, the second volume on quantum mechanics by Franz Schwabl, discusses nonrelativistic multi-particle systems, relativistic wave equations and relativistic quantum fields. Characteristic of the authorswork are the comprehensiv e mathematical discussions in which all intermediate steps are derived and where numerous examples of application and exercises help the reader gain a thorough working knowledge of the subject. The topicstreated in the book lay the foundation for advanced studies in solid-state physics, nuclear and elementary particle physics. This text both extends and complements Schwabls introductory Quantum Mechanics, which covers nonrelativisticquantum mechanics and offers a short treatment of the quantization of the radiation field. The fourth edition has been thoroughly revised with new material having been added. Furthermore, the layout of the figures has been unified, which should facilitate comprehension |
