Note:Discovered in 1880, piezoelectric materials play a key role in an innovative market of several billions of dollars. Recent advances in applications derive from new materials and their development, as well as to new marketrequirements. With the except ion of quartz, ferroelectric materials are used for they offer both high efficiency and sufficient versatility to meet adequately the multidimensional requirements for application. Consequently, strongemphasis is placed on tailoring materials and technolo gy, whether one deals with single crystals, ceramics or plastic materials. Tailoring requires a basic understanding of both physical principles and technical possibilities andlimitations. This report elucidates these developments by a broad spectrum of ex amples, comprising ultrasound in medicine and defence industry, frequency control, signal processing by SAW-devices, sensors, actuators, including novelvalves for modern motor management. It delivers a mutual fertilization of technology push and market pu ll that should be of interest not only to materials scientists or engineers but also to managers who dedicate themselves to a soundfuture-oriented R&D policy

Note:A lot of economic problems can formulated as constrained optimizations and equilibration of their solutions. Various mathematical theories have been supplying economists with indispensable machineries for these problems arising ineconomic theory. Con versely, mathematicians have been stimulated by various mathematical difficulties raised by economic theories. The series is designed to bring together those mathematicians who were seriously interested in gettingnew challenging stimuli from economic theo ries with those economists who are seeking for effective mathematical tools for their researchers. Members of the editorial board of this series consists of following prominent economists andmathematicians: Managing Editors: S. Kusuoka (Univ. Tokyo), A. Y amazaki (Hitotsubashi Univ.) - Editors: R.
