Note:Thomas Gold (1920-2004) had a curious mind that liked to solve problems. He was one of the most remarkable astrophysicists in the second half of the twentieth century, and he attracted controversy throughout his career. Based ona full-length autobiog raphy left behind by Thomas Gold, this book was edited by the astrophysicist and historian of science, Simon Mitton (University of Cambridge). The book is a retrospective on Golds remarkable life. He fled fromVienna in 1933, eventually settling in England and completing an engineering degree at Trinity College in Cambridge. During the war, he worked on naval radar research alongside Fred Hoyle and Hermann Bondi which, in an unlikelychain of events, eventually led to his working with them on steady-state cosmology. In 1968, shortly after their discovery, he provided the explanation of pulsars as rotating neutron stars. In his final position at Cornell, he and hiscolleagues persuaded the US Defense Department to fund the conversion of the giant radio teles cope at Arecibo in Puerto Rico into a superb instrument for radio astronomy. Golds interests covered physiology, astronomy, cosmology,geophysics, and engineering. Written in an intriguing style and with an equally intriguing foreword by Freeman Dyson, thi s book constitutes an important historical document, made accessible to all those interested in the history ofscience.

It offers truly enjoyable (friendly!) mathematical exposition that is rich in intuitive explanations, as well as clean, direct, and clear in its theoreticaldevelopments. I found Kaiser's straightforward end -of-chapter exercises excellent...Kaiser has written an excellent introduction to the fundamental concepts of wavelets. For a book of its length and purpose, I think it should beessentially unbeatable for a long time. Proceedings of the IEEE It is well pr oduced and certainly readable...This material should present no difficulty for fourth-year undergraduates...It also will be useful to advanced workers inthat it presents a different approach to wavelet theory from the usual one. Computing Reviews I found this to be an excellent book. It is eminently more readable than the books...which might be considered the principal alternativesfor textbooks on wavelets. Physics Today This volume is probably the most gentle introduction to wavelet theory on the market. As such, it responds to a significant need. The intended audience will profit from the motivation andcommon-sense explanations in the text. Ultimately, it may lead many readers, who may not otherwise have been able to do so, to go further into wavelet th eory, Fourier analysis, and signal processing. Note:In the 1960s and 1970s deep space missions were dispatched in pairs in case one was lost in launch or failed during its journey. Following the triumphs of the Viking landings on Mars in 1976 and both Voyagers spacecraftsuccessfully surveying the oute r giant planets of the Solar System, it was decided by NASA to cut costs and send out just a single probe. Although Magellan successfully mapped Venus by radar, it suffered from problems during theflight. Then came the loss of Mars Observer, whose engine exploded as it was preparing to enter Mars orbit because it was using technology designed for Earths satellites and the engine was not suited to spending several months inspace. Later came the high-profile losses of Mars Climate Observer and Mars Polar La nder - a consequence of the faster, better, cheaper philosophy introduced by Dan Goldin in 1993. Even the highly successful Galileo mission suffered amajor setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite mission suffered a major setback when i ts high-gain antenna (also based on satellite communication technology) failed to deploy fully, greatly diminishing the craftsradio transmission capabilities, forcing the ground crew to re-programme the on-board computer to enable it to fulfil its mission and provide stunning images of Jupiter and its moons.
