Starting with a tutorial for novices in neural field studies, thebook comprises chapters on emergent pattern s, their phase transitions and evolution, on stochastic approaches, cortical development, cognition, robotics and computation, large-scale numerical simulations, the coupling of neural fieldsto the electroencephalogram and phase transitions in anesthesia. The intended readership are students and scientists in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, theoretical biology, and computational neuroscience. Neural field theoryand its applications have a long-standing tradition in the mathematical and computati onal neurosciences. Beginning almost 50 years ago with seminal work by Griffiths and culminating in the 1970ties with the models of Wilson and Cowan,Nunez and Amari, this important research area experienced a renaissance during the 1990ties by the groups of Ermentrout, Bressloff, Haken, and Wright. A decomposition into subsystems leads to a minimal representation and to a recursive representation, respectively, of the equations ofmotion. Applied to elastic multibody systems one obtains, along with t he use of spatial operators, a straight-on procedure for the interconnected partial and ordinary differential equations and the corresponding boundary conditions.The spatial operators are eventually applied to a RITZ series for approximation. The resultin g equations then appear in the same structure as in rigid multibody systems. The main emphasis is laid on methodical as well as on (graduatelevel) educational aspects. Note:Evolutionary Computation for Optimization and Modeling is an introduction to evolutionary computation, a field which includes genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, evolution strategies, and genetic programming. The basis of the approach consists in dealing with such problems without resorting toany regularization process. Indeed, the nonsmooth ness is due to simplified mechanical modeling a more sophisticated model would require too large a number of variables, and sometimes the mechanical information is not available viaexperimental investigations. Therefore, the mathematical formulation becom es nonsmooth regularizing would only be a trick of arithmetic without any physical justification.
