Note:Newtons classical physics and its underlying ontology are loaded with several metaphysical hypotheses that cannot be justified by rational reasoning nor by experimental evidence. Furthermore, it is well known that some ofthese hypotheses are not cont ained in the great theories of Modern Physics, such as the theory of Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. This book shows that, on the basis of Newtons classical physics and by rationalreconstruction, the theory of Special Relativity as well as Quant um Mechanics can be obtained by partly eliminating or attenuating the metaphysical hypotheses. Moreover, it is shown that these reconstructions do not require additionalhypotheses or new experimental results. In the second edition the rational reconstruct ions are completed with respect to General Relativity and Cosmology. In addition, the statistics of quantum objects is elaborated in more detail withrespect to the rational reconstruction of quantum mechanics. The new material completes the approach of th e book as much as it is possible at the present state of knowledge. Probing Gaussianity in the CMB addresses one of the key questions in modern cosmology because it allows us todiscriminate between different m odels of inflation, and thus concerns a fundamental part of the standard cosmological model. The basic goalhere is to adapt complementary methods stemming from the field of complexity science toCMB data analysis. Two key concepts, namely the method of su rrogates and estimators for local scaling properties, are applied to CMB data analysis. All results show strong non-Gaussianities and pronounced asymmetries. Theconsistency of the full sky and cut sky results shows convincingly for the first time that th e influence of the Galactic plane is not responsible for these deviations from Gaussianity and isotropy. The findings seriously call intoquestion predictions of isotropic cosmologies based on the widely accepted single field slow roll inflation model

Note:Thomas Gold (1920-2004) had a curious mind that liked to solve problems. He was one of the most remarkable astrophysicists in the second half of the twentieth century, and he attracted controversy throughout his career. Based ona full-length autobiog raphy left behind by Thomas Gold, this book was edited by the astrophysicist and historian of science, Simon Mitton (University of Cambridge). The book is a retrospective on Golds remarkable life. He fled fromVienna in 1933, eventually settling in England and completing an engineering degree at Trinity College in Cambridge. During the war, he worked on naval radar research alongside Fred Hoyle and Hermann Bondi which, in an unlikelychain of events, eventually led to his working with them on steady-state cosmology. In 1968, shortly after their discovery, he provided the explanation of pulsars as rotating neutron stars. In his final position at Cornell, he and hiscolleagues persuaded the US Defense Department to fund the conversion of the giant radio teles cope at Arecibo in Puerto Rico into a superb instrument for radio astronomy. Golds interests covered physiology, astronomy, cosmology,geophysics, and engineering. Written in an intriguing style and with an equally intriguing foreword by Freeman Dyson, thi s book constitutes an important historical document, made accessible to all those interested in the history ofscience.

He received hisPhD for a thesis on particle physics under the supervision of Werner Heisenberg and Hans-Peter Drr. Professor Brner is the author of the successful graduate textbook The Early Universe (published by Springer and now in its 4thedition), as well as of several popular science books on cosmology. In 2009 he received the Chinese Academy of Sciences Award for International C ooperation in Science and Technology (together with Prof. Maurice-Roger Bonnet). In 2010he received the Friendship Award, and in January 2011 the Chinese governments National Award for Cooperation in Science and Technology, the highest honor bestowed on f oreigners

In Part One the reader is introduced in the archaic world-picture of a flat earth with the cupola of the celestial vaultonto whichthe celestial bodies are attached. One of the subjects treated in that context is the riddle of the tilted celestial axis. This part also contains an extensive chapter on archaic astronomical instruments.Part Twoshowshow Anaximander (610-547 B.C.) blew up this archaic world-picture and replaced it by a new one that is essentially still ours. He taught that the celestial bodies orbit at different distances and that the earth floats unsupported inspace. This makes him the founding father of cosmology.Part Threediscusses topics that completed the new picturedescribed by Anaximander. Special attention is paid to the confrontation between Anaxagoras and Aristotle on thequestion whether the earth is flat or spherical, and on the battlebetween Aristotle and Heraclides Pontic us on the question whether the universe is finite or infinite.
