Title:Computational Experiment Approach to Advanced Secondary Mathematics Curriculum [electronic resource]
Author(s): Sergei Abramovich
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book promotes the experimental mathematics approach in the context of secondary mathematics curriculum by exploring mathematical models depending on parameters that were typically considered advanced in the pre-digitaleducation era. This approac h, by drawing on the power of computers to perform numerical computations and graphical constructions, stimulates formal learning of mathematics through making sense of a computational experiment. It allowsone (in the spirit of Freudenthal) to bridge seri ous mathematical content and contemporary teaching practice. In other words, the notion of teaching experiment can be extended to include a true mathematical experiment. When usedappropriately, the approach creates conditions for collateral learning (in t he spirit of Dewey) to occur including the development of skills important for engineering applications of mathematics. In the context of a mathematics teachereducation program, this book addresses a call for the preparation of teachers capable of utilizi ng modern technology tools for the modeling-based teaching of mathematics with a focus on methods conducive to the improvement of the wholeSTEM education at the secondary level. By the same token, using the books pedagogy and its mathematical content in a pre-college classroom can assist teachers in introducing students to the ideas that develop the foundation ofengineering profession

Title:Andr-Louis Cholesky [electronic resource] : Mathematician, Topographer and Army Officer
Author(s): Claude Brezinski
Dominique Tourns
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:Outside the professional circles of topography and applied mathematics, the life and work of Andr-Louis Cholesky (18751918) are still relatively unknown to the scientific community. This new book appreciably widens theexposure of his remarkable perso nal achievements in topography and mathematics to a much larger international audience. Cholesky is also interesting to historians because he is a perfect representative of the scientistsengineers that, since the early 19th century, had issued from the F rench scientific high schools. Because they had received a high level of mathematical education, they were able to innovate in their practice of engineering. In thecase of Cholesky, this resulted in original contributions in artillery, topography, numeric al analysis and graphical calculation. In addition, the book places his education and works within the history of several European countriesthrough the 17th to 19th centuries. The book begins with Cholesky's biography, followed by his familys history and an introduction to topography. It continues with a historical analysis of an unpublished paper (translated intoEnglish) in which Cholesky explained his method for linear systems. Cholesky's other works are then described, such as his participation in tea ching at a superior school by correspondence founded by Lon Eyrolles. His importantunpublished book in French on graphical calculation, which is reproduced in its entirety, is analyzed in detail and compared to similar contemporary publications. The biogr aphy of Ernest Benoit, who wrote the first paper on Cholesky'smethod, is provided. Various documents, highlighting the life and the personality of Cholesky, round out his story and end the book

Title:Quantum Mechanics for Pedestrians 2: Applications and Extensions [electronic resource]
Author(s): Jochen Pade
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The two-volume textbook Quantum Mechanics for Pedestrians provides an introduction to the basics of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Originally written as a course for students of science education, the book addresses all thosescience students and others who are looking for a reasonably simple, fresh and modern introduction to the field. The basic principles of quantum mechanics are presented in the first volume. This second volume discusses applications andextensions to more complex problems. In a ddition to topics traditionally dealt with in quantum mechanics texts, such as symmetries or many-body problems, here also issues of current interest such as entanglement, Bell's inequalities, decoherence and various aspects of quantum information are trea ted in detail. Furthermore, questions of the basis of quantum mechanics and epistemological issues are discussed explicitly these are relevant e.g. to the realism debate.A chapter on the interpretations of quantum mechanics completes this volume. The nece ssary mathematical tools are introduced step by step in the appendix, the most relevant mathematics is compiled in compact form. More advanced topicssuch as the Lenz vector, Hardy's experiment and Shor's algorithm are treated in more detail in the appendi x. As an essential aid to learning and teaching, 130 exercises are included, most of them with their solutions

Title:Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam [electronic resource] : Research, Teaching, Life
Author(s): Alexander Pechenkin
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This biography of the famous Soviet physicist Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam (1889-1944), who became a Professor at Moscow State University in 1925, describes his contributions to both physics and technology, as well as discussingthe scientific communi ty which formed around him, usually called the Mandelstam school. Mandelstams life story is thereby placed in its proper cultural context. The following more general issues are taken under consideration: theimpact of German scientific culture on Russian s cience the problems and fates of Russian intellectuals during the revolutionary and post-revolutionary years the formation of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and transformation of thesystem of higher education in the USSR during the 1920's and 1930's.The a uthor shows that Mandelstams fundamental writings and his lectures notes allow to reconstruct his philosophy of science and his approach to the social andethical functions of science and science education. That reconstruction is enhanced through extensive use of hitherto unpublished archival material as well as the transcripts of personal interviews conducted by the author

Title:Complexity Perspectives on Language, Communication and Society [electronic resource]

Albert Bastardas-Boada
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The language-communication-society triangle defies traditional scientific approaches. Rather, it is a phenomenon that calls for an integration of complex, transdisciplinary perspectives, if we are to make any progress inunderstanding how it works. Th e highly diverse agents in play are not merely cognitive and/or cultural, but also emotional and behavioural in their specificity. Indeed, the effort may require building a theoretical and methodologicalbody of knowledge that can effectively convey the ch aracteristic properties of phenomena in human terms. New complexity approaches allow us to rethink our limited and mechanistic images of human societies and create more appropriateemo-cognitive dynamic and holistic models. We have to enter into dialogue w ith the complexity views coming out of other more material sciences, but we also need to take steps in the linguistic and psycho-sociological fieldstowards creating perspectives and concepts better fitted to human characteristics. Our understanding of com plexity is different but not opposed to the one that is more commonly found in texts written by people working inphysics or computer science, for example. The goal of this book is to extend the knowledge of these other more human or socially oriented pe rspectives on complexity, taking account of the language and communication singularitiesof human agents in society.

Note:For the latter half of the 20th century, cobalt-60 units were the mainstay of radiation treatments for cancer. Cobalt Blues describes the development of the first cobalt-60 unit in the United States and the man behind it, LeonardGrimmett. Conceptuall y conceived before World War II, it only became possible because of the development of nuclear reactors during the war. Although Grimmett conceived of and published his ideas first, the Canadians built the firstunits because of the capability of their rea ctor to produce more suitable cobalt-60 sources. This book tells the story of how Grimmett and others came together at the time that the U S Atomic Energy Agency was pushing the use ofradioactivity in medicine. Due to his sudden death, very little informa tion about Grimmett was known until recently, when various documents have come to light, allowing the full story to be told

Note:Born after World War II, large-scale experimental high-energy physics (HEP) has found itself limited ever since by available accelerator, detector and computing technologies. Accordingly, HEP has made significant contributions tothe development of th ese fields, more often than not driving their innovations. The invention of the World Wide Web at CERN is merely the best-known example out of many. This book is the first comprehensive account to trace the historyof this pioneering spirit in the field of computing technologies. It covers everything up to and including the present-day handling of the huge demands imposed upon grid and distributed computing by full-scale LHC operations -operations which have for years involved many thousands of collaborati ng members worldwide and accordingly provide the original and natural testbed for grid computing concepts. This book takes the reader on a guided tour encompassingall relevant topics, including programming languages, software engineering, large databases, the Web, and grid- and cloud computing. The important issue of intellectual property regulations for distributed software engineering andcomputing is also addressed. Aptly, the book closes with a visionary chapter of what may lie ahead. Approachable and requiring only basic understanding of physics and computer sciences, this book is intended for both education andresearch

Title:New Eyes on the Sun [electronic resource] : A Guide to Satellite Images and Amateur Observation
Author(s): John Wilkinson
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Information collected by satellites recently sent by the USA, the European Space Agency, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Russia to monitor the Sun has changed our knowledge and understanding of the Sun, particularly itseffect on Earth. This b ook presents these findings in a way that will be welcomed by amateur astronomers, students, educators and anyone interested in the Sun. Enhanced by many colour photographs, the book combines newly acquiredscientific understanding with detailed descriptio ns of features visible on the Suns surface and in its atmosphere. In the past, observing the Sun has been left to academics with specialised instruments, since solar observation hasbeen unsafe because of the risk of eye damage. This book explains how amat eur astronomers can safely observe the various solar phenomena using special hydrogen-alpha telescopes that are not too expensive. Amateurs can now make apositive contribution to science by monitoring the Sun as professionals do. Amateurs can also access the solar images taken by satellites via the internet. This book helps readers interpret and understand what these images areshowing about the Sun, including the latest 3D images. Solar observers will enjoy comparing their own solar telescope observations with those produced by space probes such as SDO, SOHO, Hinode and STEREO, and further enjoy learningabout transits, eclipses, and space weather and how the Sun compares to other stars in the universe. The main purpose of this book is to present some of t he fascinating solar phenomena in their full splendor to readers through avariety of illustrations, photographs and easy to understand text. Note:Water supply- and drainage systems and mixed water channel systems are networks whose high dynamic is determined and/or affected by consumer habits on drinking water on the one hand and by climate conditions, in particularrainfall, on the other hand. According to their size, water networks consist of hundreds or thousands of system elements. Moreover, different types of decisions (continuous and discrete) have to be taken in the water management. Thenetworks have to be optimized in terms of topology and operation by targeting a variety of criteria. Criteria may for example be economic, social or ecological ones and may compete with each other. The development of complex modelsystems and their use for deriving optimal decisions in water management is taking place at a rapid pace. Simulation and optimization methods originating in Operations Research have been used for several decades usually with verylimited direct cooperation with applied mathematics. The research presented here aims at bridging this gap, thereby opening up space for synergies and innovation. It is directly applicable for relevant practical problems and has beencarried out in cooperation with utility and dumping companies, infrastructure providers and planning offices. A close and di rect connection to the practice of water management has been established by involving application-orientedknow-how from the field of civil engineering. On the mathematical side all necessary disciplines were involved, including mixed-integer optimization, multi-objective and facility location optimization, numerics for cross-linked dynamictransportation systems and optimization as well as control of hybrid systems. Most of the presented research has been supported by the joint project Discret-continuous o ptimization of dynamic water systems of the federalministry of education and research (BMBF)

Title:Iris Runge [electronic resource] : A Life at the Crossroads of Mathematics, Science, and Industry
Author(s): Renate Tobies
Date:2012
Publisher:Basel : Springer Basel
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book concerns the origins of mathematical problem solving at the internationally active Osram and Telefunken Corporations during the golden years of broadcasting and electron tube research. The woman scientist Iris Runge, who received an interdis ciplinary education at the University of Gttingen, was long employed as the sole mathematical authority at these companies in Berlin. It will be shown how mathematical connections were made between statisticsand quality control, and between physical-chemi cal models and the actual problems of mass production. The organization of industrial laboratories, the relationship between theoretical and experimental work, and the role ofmathematicians in these settings will also be explained. By investigating the so cial, economic, and political conditions that unfolded from the time of the German Empire until the end of the Second World War, the book hopes to build abridge between specialized fields mathematics and engineering and the general culture of a particul ar era. It hopes, furthermore, to build a bridge between the history of science and industry, on the one hand, and the fields ofGender and Womens Studies on the other. Finally, by examining the life and work of numerous industrial researchers, insight wil l be offered into the conditions that enabled a woman to achieve a prominent professional position duringa time when women were typically excluded from the scientific workforce

Title:Henri Poincar [electronic resource] : Impatient Genius
Author(s): Ferdinand Verhulst
Date:2012
Publisher:Boston, MA : Springer US : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book describes the life and work of Henri Poincar, detailing most of his unique achievements in mathematics and physics. It is divided into two partsthe first on Poincars life, and the second on his contributionsto the mathematical sciences. Apa rt from biographical details, attention is given to Poincars results on automorphic functions differential equations and dynamical systems celestial mechanics mathematical physics, in particularthe theory of the electron and relativity and topology (analy sis situs). A chapter on philosophy explains Poincars conventionalism in mathematics and his view of conventionalism in physics. The book shows how Poincar reachedhis fundamentally new results in many different fields, how he thought about problems, and h ow one should read his work. Simultaneously, it is made clear how analysis and geometry are intertwined in Poincars thinking and work. Indynamical systems, this becomes clear in his description of invariant manifolds, his association of differential equat ion flow with mappings, and his fixed-point theory. There is no comparable book on Poincar presenting such arelatively complete vision of his life and the working of his very original mind. Scientists and engineers as well as general readers interested in the history of science will find this book of interest. Reviews of this book:Thetitle of this biography is particularly well chosen : Henri Poincar was a true genius, and he was impatient. It gives a fair picture of both the man and the scientist, comple ted by particularly well chosen illustrations. Jean Mawhin,Universit Catholique de Louvain, Belgium Ferdinand Verhulst has written a true scientific biography, introducing Poincar the man, his cultural milieu, and his mathematics. This book shows why, a c entury after his death,Poincar's ideas still shape a substantial part of the mathematical sciences. Philip J Holmes, Princeton University, USA

Title:The Astronomer Jules Janssen [electronic resource] A Globetrotter of Celestial Physics
Author(s): Franoise Launay
Date:2012
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Every aspect of the personality of Janssen (18241907) that DArtagnan of science, this bard of the Sun, and this audacious master builder is covered here by Franoise Launay, his attentive and equally eruditebiographer. A physicist, inventor and buil der, Janssen was guided by his energy and curiosity. His research followed two directions: on the one hand the atmospheres of the Earth and the Sun, and on the other, two techniques:spectroscopy and photography. Among his numerous voyages across the globe , he went to Japan in 1874 to follow the transit of Venus in front of the Sun, the same year in which he invented his famous photographic revolver, which was, intruth, a great technical success. To observe the Sun during total eclipses he traveled to the Indies in 1868, to Oran in 1870 (escaping from besieged Paris by balloon!), returned to India in 1871, left for Siam in 1875 and, in 1883,for an island in the Pacific. One can thus understand why Henriette often complained of the solitude in which she was left by her peripatetic husband: There are men who leave their wives for mistresses you do it for journeys!... Basking in the glow of his success, Janssen was able to undertake the construction of the great astrophysical observatory of which he had dream ed. It was at Meudon that he had it built. Note:Learning spaces offer a rigorous mathematical foundation for various practical systems of knowledge assessment. An example is offered by the ALEKS system (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces), a software for the assessmentof mathematical know ledge. From a mathematical standpoint, learning spaces as well as knowledge spaces (which made the title of the first edition) generalize partially ordered sets. They are investigated both from a combinatorial and astochastic viewpoint. The results are ap plied to real and simulated data. The book gives a systematic presentation of research and extends the results to new situations. It is of interest to mathematically oriented readers ineducation, computer science and combinatorics at research and graduate levels. The text contains numerous examples and exercises, and an extensive bibliography

Note:Numerical Ecology with R provides a long-awaited bridge between a textbook in Numerical Ecology and the implementation of this discipline in the R language. After short theoretical overviews, the authors accompany the usersthrough the exploration of the methods by means of applied and extensively commented examples. Users are invited to use this book as a teaching companion at the computer. The travel starts with exploratory approaches, proceeds with theconstruction of associationmatrices, then addre sses three families of methods: clustering, unconstrained and canonical ordination, and spatial analysis. All the necessary data files, the scripts used in the chapters, as well as theextra R functions and packages written by the authors, can be downloaded from a web page accessible through the Springer web site(http://adn.biol.umontreal.ca/~numericalecology/numecolR/). This book is aimed at professionalresearchers, practitioners, graduate students and teachers in ecology, environmental science and enginee ring, and in related fields such as oceanography, molecular ecology, agriculture and soil science, who already have a background ingeneral and multivariate statistics and wish to apply this knowledge to their data using the R language, as well as people w illing to accompany their disciplinary learning with practical applications. People from other fields (e.g.geology, geography, paleoecology, phylogenetics, anthropology, the social and education sciences, etc.) may also benefit from the materials presente d in this book. The three authors teach numerical ecology, both theoretical andpractical, to a wide array of audiences, in regular courses in their Universities and in short courses given around the world. Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Four hundred years ago in Middelburg, in the Netherlands, the telescope was invented. The invention unleashed a revolution in the exploration of the universe. Galileo Galilei discovered mountains on the Moon, spots on the Sun,and moons around Jupiter . Christiaan Huygens saw details on Mars and rings around Saturn. William Herschel discovered a new planet and mapped binary stars and nebulae. Other astronomers determined the distances to stars, unraveled thestructure of the Milky Way, and discovered th e expansion of the universe. And, as telescopes became bigger and more powerful, astronomers delved deeper into the mysteries of the cosmos. In his Atlas of Astronomical Discoveries, astronomy journalist Govert Schilling tells the story of 400 years of tel escopic astronomy. He looks at the 100 most important discoveries since the invention of the telescope. In his direct and accessible style, the author takes hisreaders on an exciting journey encompassing the highlights of four centuries of astronomy. Spec tacular photographs, taken with the largest telescopes on Earth and in space, portray the most distant corners of the universe. Selectingand describing the hundred most impressive and important astronomical discoveries is no easy task, but no one can mast er this feat as well as Govert Schilling, a veritable master of science communication. With captivating words andbreathtaking images, the Atlas of Astronomical Discoveries is a tour-de-force of humankinds almost unbelievable progress in understanding the cosmos over the past 400 years. Lars Lindberg Christensen, Head of ESOs Education andPublic Outreach Department and author of Cosmic Collisions (Springer 2009) A hyper modern concept, aimed at the multimedia generation. This fascinating book tells thehistory of Simula, detail ing the culture and values that have been the guiding principles of the laboratory throughout its existence. Dedicated to tackling scientific challenges of genuine social importance, the laboratory undertakesimportant research with long-term implications in networks, computing and software engineering, which includes offering a Centre of Excellence in biomedical computing. The text covers every angle: the laboratory's background andpolitical context, the work it has completed, its approach to the educatio n and development of its researchers, and the organisation's efforts to promote the application of its research results. The key research projects and resultsare covered in separate chapters, each of which is preceded by a thumbnail description of the pro ject and how the research is useful for society. As well as explanatory text, the other chapters feature interviews with major players inthe facility's history, both inside Simula, among its collaborators, and in Norwegian society at large

Note:An observational study is an empiric investigation of effects caused by treatments when randomized experimentation is unethical or infeasible. Observational studies are common in most fields that study the effects of treatmentson people, including me dicine, economics, epidemiology, education, psychology, political science and sociology. The quality and strength of evidence provided by an observational study is determined largely by its design. Design ofObservational Studies is both an introduction to statistical inference in observational studies and a detailed discussion of the principles that guide the design of observational studies. Design of Observational Studies is divided intofour parts. Chapters 2, 3, and 5 of Part I cover concisely, in about one hundred pages, many of the ideas discussed in Rosenbaums Observational Studies (also published by Springer) but in a less technical fashion. Part II discussesthe practical aspects of using propensity scores and other tools to create a matched compari son that balances many covariates. Part II includes a chapter on matching in R. In Part III, the concept of design sensitivity is used toappraise the relative ability of competing designs to distinguish treatment effects from biases due to unmeasured cova riates. Part IV discusses planning the analysis of an observational study, with particular reference to Sir RonaldFishers striking advice for observational studies, make your theories elaborate. Paul R. Rosenbaum is the Robert G. Putzel Professor of Stati stics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a fellow of theAmerican Statistical Association. In 2003, he received the George W. Snedecor Award from the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies. He is a senior fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics and a ResearchAssociate at the Population Studies Center, both at the University of Pennsylvania. Note:The arrival of the computer in educational and psychological testing has led to the current popularity of adaptive testing---a testing format in which the computer uses statistical information about the test items toautomatically adapt their selectio n to a real-time update of the test takers ability estimate. This book covers such key features of adaptive testing as item selection and ability estimation, adaptive testing with multidimensionalabilities, sequencing adaptive test batteries, multistage a daptive testing, item-pool design and maintenance, estimation of item and item-family parameters, item and person fit, as well as adaptive mastery and classification testing. It also shows how these features are used in the daily operations of several larg e-scale adaptive testing programs. Wim J. van der Linden is Chief Research Scientist at CTB/McGraw-Hill, Monterey, CA. His specialization is psychometrictheory and methods, and he has been an active researcher of adaptive testing throughout his career. Fo r Springer, he wrote Linear Models for Optimal Test Design (2005) and co-edited Handbook of Modern Item ResponseTheory (1997). He isa past president of the Psychometric Society and recipient of lifetime achievement awards from the National Council for Mea surement in Education (NCME) and the Association of Test Publishers (ATP). Cees A. W. Glas is Professor ofSocial Science Research Methodology, University of Twente, the Netherlands. His specialization is psychometric theory and methods, with an emphasis o n item response theory, adaptive testing, model fit analysis, and missing data.Professor Glas is a co-author of Educational Evaluation, Assessment, and Monitoring (Swets & Zetlinger, 2003). Currently, he is a member of the Editorial Board of Psychometrika and serves as a technical consultant to the OECD programsfor international student assessment (PISA) and the assessment of adult competencies (PIAAC)
