Title:Computational Experiment Approach to Advanced Secondary Mathematics Curriculum [electronic resource]
Author(s): Sergei Abramovich
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This book promotes the experimental mathematics approach in the context of secondary mathematics curriculum by exploring mathematical models depending on parameters that were typically considered advanced in the pre-digitaleducation era. This approac h, by drawing on the power of computers to perform numerical computations and graphical constructions, stimulates formal learning of mathematics through making sense of a computational experiment. It allowsone (in the spirit of Freudenthal) to bridge seri ous mathematical content and contemporary teaching practice. In other words, the notion of teaching experiment can be extended to include a true mathematical experiment. When usedappropriately, the approach creates conditions for collateral learning (in t he spirit of Dewey) to occur including the development of skills important for engineering applications of mathematics. In the context of a mathematics teachereducation program, this book addresses a call for the preparation of teachers capable of utilizi ng modern technology tools for the modeling-based teaching of mathematics with a focus on methods conducive to the improvement of the wholeSTEM education at the secondary level. By the same token, using the books pedagogy and its mathematical content in a pre-college classroom can assist teachers in introducing students to the ideas that develop the foundation ofengineering profession

Title:Introduzione al Laboratorio di Fisica [electronic resource] : Misure e Teoria delle Incertezze
Author(s): Giuseppe Ciullo
Date:2014
Publisher:Milano : Springer Milan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource

Title:Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam [electronic resource] : Research, Teaching, Life
Author(s): Alexander Pechenkin
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This biography of the famous Soviet physicist Leonid Isaakovich Mandelstam (1889-1944), who became a Professor at Moscow State University in 1925, describes his contributions to both physics and technology, as well as discussingthe scientific communi ty which formed around him, usually called the Mandelstam school. Mandelstams life story is thereby placed in its proper cultural context. The following more general issues are taken under consideration: theimpact of German scientific culture on Russian s cience the problems and fates of Russian intellectuals during the revolutionary and post-revolutionary years the formation of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and transformation of thesystem of higher education in the USSR during the 1920's and 1930's.The a uthor shows that Mandelstams fundamental writings and his lectures notes allow to reconstruct his philosophy of science and his approach to the social andethical functions of science and science education. That reconstruction is enhanced through extensive use of hitherto unpublished archival material as well as the transcripts of personal interviews conducted by the author

Title:It Came From Outer Space Wearing an RAF Blazer! [electronic resource] : A Fan's Biography of Sir Patrick Moore
Author(s): Martin Mobberley
Date:2013
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:To British television viewers, the name Patrick Moore has been synonymous with Astronomy and Space Travel since he first appeared on The Sky at Night in 1957. To amateur astronomers he has been a source of inspiration, joy, humour and even an eccentri c role model since that time. Most people know that his 55 years of presenting The Sky at Night is a world record, but what was he really like in person? What did he do away from the TV cameras, in hisobservatory, and within the British Astronomical Assoc iation, the organisation that inspired him as a youngster? Also, precisely what did he do during the War Years, a subject that has always been shrouded in mystery? Martin Mobberley,a friend of Patrick Moores for 30 years, and a former President of the Bri tish Astronomical Association, has spent ten years exhaustively researching Patricks real life away from the TV cameras. His childhood, RAF service, tireless voluntary work for astronomy and charity and his endless book writing are all examined in detail. His astronomical observations are also examined in unprecedented detail, along with the battles he fought along the way and hishatred of bureaucracy and political correctness. No fan of Sir Patrick Moore can possibly live without this work on their booksh elf!

Title:Mechanics [electronic resource] : An Intensive Course
Author(s): Masud Chaichian
Ioan Merches
Anca Tureanu
Date:2012
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Mechanics is one of the oldest and at the same time newest disciplines, in the sense that there are methods and principles developed first in mechanics but now widely used in almost all branches of physics: electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, classica l and quantum field theory, special and general theory of relativity, etc. More than that, there are some formalisms like Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches, which represent the key stone for thedevelopment of the above-mentioned disciplines. During th e last 20-25 years, classical mechanics has undergone an important revival associated with the progress in non-linear dynamics, applications of Noethers theorem and theextension of variational principles in various interdisciplinary sciences (for instance , magnetofluid dynamics). Thus, there ought to exist a book concerned with the applied analytical formalism, first developed in the frame oftheoretical mechanics, which has proved to be one of the most efficient tools of investigation in the entire arena of science. The present book is an outcome of the authors teaching experience over many years in different countriesand for different students studying diverse fields of physics. The book is intended for students at the level of undergraduate and graduate studies in physics, engineering, astronomy, applied mathematics and for researchers working inrelated subjects. We hope that the original presentation and the distribution of the topics, the various applications in many branches of physics and the set of more than 100 proposed problems, shall make this book a comprehensiveand useful tool for students and researchers

This course shouldbe required of every undergraduate major employing the mathematical sciences. It differs from the mathematics appreciation coursescourses that are merely a collection of amusing puzzles and toy problems giving an il lusion ofa mathematical encounterpresently found in many institutions. Students of this course are introduced to the context in which mathematics exists and the incredible magnitude of words devoted to communicating mathematics (hundredsof thousands of th eorems each year). Title:La strana storia della luce e del colore [electronic resource]
Author(s): Rodolfo Guzzi
Date:2011
Publisher:Milano : Springer Milan : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections

Note:Basic Electromagnetism and Materials is the product of many years of teaching basic and applied electromagnetism. This textbook can be used to teach electromagnetism to a wide range of undergraduate science majors in physics, electrical engineering or materials science. However, by making lesser demands on mathematical knowledge than competing texts, and by emphasizing electromagnetic properties of materials and their applications, this textbook is uniquelysuited to students of materials science. Many competing texts focus on the study of propagation waves either in the microwave or optical domain, whereas Basic Electromagnetism and Materials covers the entire electromagnetic domain andthe physical response of materials to these waves. Professor Andr Moliton is Director of the Unit de Microlectronique, Optolectronique et Polymres (Universit de Limoges, France), which brings together three groups studyingthe optoelectronics of molecular and polymer layers, micro-optoelectronic systems for telecommunica tions, and micro-electronics and microtechnology through the use of ion implantation and simulations

Note:Randomized clinical trials are the gold standard for establishing many clinical practice guidelines and are central to evidence based medicine. Obtaining the best evidence through clinical trials must be done within the boundariesof rigorous science and ethical principles. One fundamental principle is that trials should not continue longer than necessary to reach their objectives. Therefore, trials must be monitored for recruitment progress, quality of data, adherence to patient care or prevention sta ndards, and early evidence of benefit or harm. Frequently, a group of external experts, independent from the investigators and trial sponsor, is charged with this monitoring responsibility, especially for safety and early benefit. This group is referred to by various names, such as a data monitoring committee or a data and safety monitoring board. This book, through a series of case studies presented by many distinguishedclinical trial experts, illustrates the complexity of this monitoring process. The edi tors provide an overview of the process and a summary of a multitude of the lessons learned from the cases presented. This book should be useful toanyone serving on a data and safety monitoring board, or planning to do so, for colleagues in academia, indu stry and governmental agencies, and for teaching students in biostatistics, epidemiology, clinical trials and medical ethics. No other text has as extensive a collection of cases which provide insight into the many issues, often conflicting, that must be e xamined before recommendations to continue or discontinue a trial can be made. While depth in statisticalmethods is not required, some familiarity with statistical design and analysis issues in clinical trials is helpful. The cases cover trials which were terminated early for convincing evidence of benefit, or for harmful effects. Caseswith complex issues are also included. This series of cases should provide broad background information for potential m

Title:Systems Approaches and Their Application [electronic resource] : Examples from Sweden
Author(s): Mats-Olov Olsson
Gunnar Sjstedt
Date:2005
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Within a conceptual framework that is developed in the two first chapters, the actual application of systems thinking is described across a broad field of cases representing research, teaching, decision support and construction. All cases are presente d by experts who have actually been involved in the activities they describe. Thus, the broad selection of cases captures the great variation of systems thinking and how it is integrated into models and theoriesand solid knowledge pertaining to different substantive areas. At the same time all case study authors address the same set of questions that are developed in the conceptual chapters. This gives comparability across cases - chapters -and brings cohesion to the book. The focus on Sweden, an advanced country in systems thinking, reinforces the unitary context in which comparison can be made between a systems approach for better research (theory), better practice andbetter design and construction

Title:Nonlinear Optimization with Financial Applications [electronic resource]
Author(s): Michael Bartholomew-Biggs
Date:2005
Publisher:Boston, MA : Springer US
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The book introduces the key ideas behind practical nonlinear optimization. Computational financean increasingly popular area of mathematics degree programmesis combined here with the study of an important class ofnumerical techniques. The financia l content of the book is designed to be relevant and interesting to specialists. However, this materialwhich occupies about one-third of the textis also sufficiently accessible to allow thebook to be used on optimization courses of a more general nature. The essentials of most currently popular algorithms are described and their performance is demonstrated on a range of optimization problems arising in financialmathematics. Theoretical convergence properties of methods are stated and formal proofs are p rovided in enough cases to be instructive rather than overwhelming. Practical behaviour of methods is illustrated by computationalexamples and discussions of efficiency, accuracy and computational costs. Supporting software for the examples and exercise s is available (but the text does not require the reader to use or understand these particular codes). The author has been active in optimization for over thirty years in algorithm development and application and in teaching and research supervision. Audi ence The book is aimed at lecturers and students (undergraduate and postgraduate)in mathematics, computational finance and related subjects. It is also useful for researchers and practitioners who need a good introduction to nonlinear optimization
