Note:The development of coherent radiation sources for sub-angstrom wavelengths - i.e. in the hard X-ray and gamma-ray range - is a challenging goal of modern physics. The availability of such sources will have many applications inbasic science, technolog y and medicine, and, in particular, they may have a revolutionary impact on nuclear and solid state physics, as well as on the life sciences. The present state-of-the-art lasers are capable of emittingelectromagnetic radiation from the infrared to the ult raviolet, while free electron lasers (X-FELs) are now entering the soft X-ray region. Moving further, i.e. into the hard X and/or gamma ray band, however, is not possible withoutnew approaches and technologies. In this book we introduce and discuss one s uch novel approach -the radiation formed in a Crystalline Undulator -whereby electromagnetic radiation is generated by a bunch of ultra-relativisticparticles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline structure. Under certain conditions, such a de vice can emit intensive spontaneous monochromatic radiation and even reach the coherence of laser light sources. Readers willbe presented with the underlying fundamental physics and be familiarized with the theoretical, experimental and technological adv ances made during the last one and a half decades in exploring the various features of investigations intocrystalline undulators. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields - such as materials science, beam physics, the physics of radiat ion, solid state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. Accordingly, much carehas been taken by the authors to make the book as self-contained as possible in this respect, so as to also provide a useful introduction to this emerging field to a broad re adership of researchers and scientist with variousbackgrounds. This new edition has been revised and extended to take recent developments in the field into account.

Note:Warm Dense Matter (WDM) occupies a loosely defined region of phase space intermediate between solid, liquid, gas, and plasma, and typically shares characteristics of two or more of these phases. WDM is generally associated withthe combination of stro ngly coupled ions and moderately degenerate electrons, and careful attention to quantum physics and electronic structure is essential. The lack of a small perturbation parameter greatly limits approximateattempts at its accurate description. Since WDM res ides at the intersection of solid state and high energy density physics, many high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments pass through this difficult region of phase space. Thus,understanding and modeling WDM is key to the success of experiments on div erse facilities. These include the National Ignition Campaign centered on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), pulsed-power driven experiments on the Z machine,ion-beam-driven WDM experiments on the NDCX-II, and fundamental WDM research at the Linear Coh erent Light Source (LCLS). Furthermore, it is well known that some ofthese hypotheses are not cont ained in the great theories of Modern Physics, such as the theory of Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. This book shows that, on the basis of Newtons classical physics and by rationalreconstruction, the theory of Special Relativity as well as Quant um Mechanics can be obtained by partly eliminating or attenuating the metaphysical hypotheses. Moreover, it is shown that these reconstructions do not require additionalhypotheses or new experimental results. In the second edition the rational reconstruct ions are completed with respect to General Relativity and Cosmology. In addition, the statistics of quantum objects is elaborated in more detail withrespect to the rational reconstruction of quantum mechanics. The new material completes the approach of th e book as much as it is possible at the present state of knowledge. Presumably, the most important contribution that is added tothe second edition refers to the problem of interpretation of the three great theories of Modern Physics. It is shown in detail that in the light of rational reconstructions even realistic interpretations of the three theories ofModern Physics are possible and can easily be achieved

Note:This volume considers experimental and theoretical dielectric studies of the structure and dynamics of complex systems. Complex systems constitute an almost universal class of materials including associated liquids, polymers,biomolecules, colloids, p orous materials, doped ferroelectric crystals, nanomaterials, etc. These systems are characterized by a new mesoscopic length scale, intermediate between molecular and macroscopic. The mesoscopic structuresof complex systems typically arise from fluctuati ons or competing interactions and exhibit a rich variety of static and dynamic behaviour. This growing field is interdisciplinary it complements solid state and statistical physics, andoverlaps considerably with chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, and biology. A common theme in complex systems is that while such materials are disordered on the molecular scale and homogeneous on the macroscopic scale,they usually possess a certain degree of order on an intermediate, or mesoscopic, scale due to the delicate balance of interaction and thermal effects.
