Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This biography summarizes the seminal contributions to auroral and space science of Carl Strmer (1874 - 1957). He was the first to develop precise photographic methods to calculate heights and morphologies of diverse auroralforms during four solar cy cles. Strmer independently devised numerical techniques to determine the trajectories of high-energy charged particles allowed and forbidden in the Earths magnetic field. His theoretical analysesexplained cosmic ray access to the upper atmosphere, 20 year s before they were identified by other scientists. Strmers crowning achievement, The Polar Aurora, published when he was 81 years old, stands to this day as aregularly cited guide in graduate-level courses on space physics. The authors present the life o f this prodigious scientist in relation to the cultural life of early 20th century in Norway and to the development of the spacesciences in the post-Sputnik era

Note:This volume is a collection of papers devoted to the 70th birthday of Professor Vladimir Rabinovich. The opening article (by Stefan Samko) includes a short biography and the bibliography of Vladimir Rabinovichs works, alongwith personal recollections . It is followed by twenty research and survey papers in various branches of analysis (pseudodifferential operators and partial differential equations, Toeplitz, Hankel, and convolution type operators, variable Lebesgue spaces, etc.) close to Professor Rab inovichs research interests. Many of them are written by participants of the international workshop Analysis, Operator Theory, and Mathematical Physics (Ixtapa, Mexico,January 2327, 2012), who have a long history of scientific collaboration with Rabinovic h and whose contributions are partially based on the talks presented at that meeting. The volume will be of great interest to researchers andgraduate students working in the fields of differential equations, operator theory, functional and harmonic analys is and mathematical physics

Title:How Einstein Created Relativity out of Physics and Astronomy [electronic resource]
Author(s): David Topper
Date:2013
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book tracks the history of the theory of relativity through Einsteins life, with in-depth studies of its background as built upon by ideas from earlier scientists. The focus points of Einsteins theory of relativityinclude its development through out his life the origins of his ideas and his indebtedness to the earlier works of Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Mach and others the application of the theory to the birth of modern cosmology and his questfor a unified field theory.

Treading a fine line between the technical and popular (but not shying away from the occasional equation), this book explains the entire range of relativity and weaves an up-to-date biography ofEinstein throughout. The result is an explanation of the world of relativity, based on an extensive journey into earlier physics and a simultaneous voyage into the mind of Einstein, written for the curious and intelligent reader

Title:L.E.J. Brouwer Topologist, Intuitionist, Philosopher [electronic resource] : How Mathematics Is Rooted in Life
Author(s): Dirk Dalen
Date:2013
Publisher:London : Springer London : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Dirk van Dalens biography studies the fascinating life of the famous Dutch mathematician and philosopher Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer. Brouwer belonged to a special class of genius complex and often controversial andgiftedwith a deep intuition, he ha d an unparalleled access to the secrets and intricacies of mathematics. Most mathematicians remember L.E.J. Brouwer from his scientific breakthroughs in the young subject of topology and for the famousBrouwer fixed point theorem. Brouwers main interest, however, was in the foundation of mathematics which led him to introduce, and then consolidate, constructive methods under the name intuitionism. This made him one of themain protagonists in the foundation crisis of mathematics. As a confirmed internation alist, he also got entangled in the interbellum struggle for the ending of the boycott of German and Austrian scientists. This time during thetwentieth century was turbulent nationalist resentment and friction between formalism and intuitionism led to the Mathematische Annalen conflict ('The war of the frogs and the mice'). It was here that Brouwer played a pivotal role. The present biography is an updated revision of the earlier two volume biography in one single book. It appeals to mathematicians and any body interested in the history of mathematics in the first half of the twentieth century

Title:Henri Poincar [electronic resource] : Impatient Genius
Author(s): Ferdinand Verhulst
Date:2012
Publisher:Boston, MA : Springer US : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book describes the life and work of Henri Poincar, detailing most of his unique achievements in mathematics and physics. It is divided into two partsthe first on Poincars life, and the second on his contributionsto the mathematical sciences. Apa rt from biographical details, attention is given to Poincars results on automorphic functions differential equations and dynamical systems celestial mechanics mathematical physics, in particularthe theory of the electron and relativity and topology (analy sis situs). A chapter on philosophy explains Poincars conventionalism in mathematics and his view of conventionalism in physics. The book shows how Poincar reachedhis fundamentally new results in many different fields, how he thought about problems, and h ow one should read his work. Simultaneously, it is made clear how analysis and geometry are intertwined in Poincars thinking and work. Indynamical systems, this becomes clear in his description of invariant manifolds, his association of differential equat ion flow with mappings, and his fixed-point theory. There is no comparable book on Poincar presenting such arelatively complete vision of his life and the working of his very original mind. Scientists and engineers as well as general readers interested in the history of science will find this book of interest. Reviews of this book:Thetitle of this biography is particularly well chosen : Henri Poincar was a true genius, and he was impatient. It gives a fair picture of both the man and the scientist, comple ted by particularly well chosen illustrations. Jean Mawhin,Universit Catholique de Louvain, Belgium Ferdinand Verhulst has written a true scientific biography, introducing Poincar the man, his cultural milieu, and his mathematics. This book shows why, a c entury after his death,Poincar's ideas still shape a substantial part of the mathematical sciences. Philip J Holmes, Princeton University, USA

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This volume is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor C.C. (Chris) Heyde (1939-2008), distinguished statistician, mathematician and scientist. Chris worked at a time when many of the foundational building blocks ofprobability and statistics we re being put in place by a phalanx of eminent scientists around the world. He contributed significantly to this effort and took his place deservedly among the top-most rank of researchers. Throughout hiscareer, Chris maintained also a keen interest in app lications of probability and statistics, and in the history of the subject. The magnitude of his impact on his chosen area of research, both in Australia and internationally, was wellrecognised by the abundance of honours he received within and without th e profession. The book is comprised of a number of Chriss papers covering each one of four major topics to which he contributed. These papers are reproducedherein. The topics, and the papers in them, were selected by four of Chriss friends and collaborato rs: Ishwar Basawa, Peter Hall, Ross Maller (overall Editor of the volume) and Eugene Seneta. Each topic is provided with an overviewby the selecting editor. The topics cover a range of areas to which Chris made especially important contributions: Inferenc e in Stochastic Processes, Rates of Convergence in the Central Limit Theorem, the Law of the Iterated Logarithm, and Branching Processes and Population Genetics. The Editor and the other contributors to the volume include well known researchers in probabil ity and statistics. The collection begins with an authors pick of a number of hispapers which Chris considered most interesting and significant, chosen by him shortly before his death. A biography of Chris by his close friend and collaborator, Joe Gani, i s also included. An introduction by the Editor and acomprehensive bibliography of Chriss publications complete the volume. The book will be of especial interest to researchers in proba

Title:Historical Encyclopedia of Natural and Mathematical Sciences [electronic resource]
Author(s): Ari Ben-Menahem
Date:2009
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This milestone extensive work combines the essentials of history biography, chronology, political and economic background with the observations, theories, principles, laws and equations that constitute the specifics ofscience. The 5800-page Encyclo pedia arises from the conviction that the optimal perspective on science is through the lens of history, setting aside traditional divisions of discipline and specialty, and rising above geopoliticalboundaries. Reaching from 4,200 BCE to the 21st century CE, the Encyclopedia relates (as the author himself puts it) not only who did it and when it was done but also precisely what was done. The author, Ari Ben-Menahem, surveys100 generations of great thinkers, offering 2070 detailed biographies of scientists , engineers, explorers and inventors, who left their mark on the history of science and technology. The span of coverage is all-encompassing:mathematics, philosophy, logic, physical and environmental sciences (including physics, chemistry, astronomy, eart h and space sciences and cosmology), life sciences (biology, medicine, physiology, botany, zoology and biochemistry),associated engineering disciplines, and the social sciences (among them economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics and mo re). The six-volume Encyclopedia also includes 380 articles summarizing the time-line of ideas inthe leading fields of science, technology, mathematics and philosophy, plus useful tables, figures and photos, and 20 Science Progress Reports detailing scien tific setbacks. Interspersed throughout are quotations, gathered fromthe wit and wisdom of sages, savants and scholars throughout the ages from antiquity to modern times
