Both mathematical models and state-of-the-art numerical methods for adequately solving the arising systems of differentialequations are presented. The operational principle of modern semiconductor nano structures, such as quantum wells, quantum wires or quantum dots, relies on quantum mechanical effects. Sylvia Schikora for the first time applies a well-known control methodcalled delayed feedback control entirely in the all-optical domain. A multisection semiconductor laser receives optical feedback from an external Fabry-Perot interferometer. The control signal is a phase-tunable superposition of thelaser signal and provokes the laser to operate in an otherwise unstable periodic state with a period equal to the time delay. In optical fibre networks, the number of wavelength channels and the bit rate per wavelength channel, i.e. the TDM(Time Division Multiplexi ng) bit rate, determine the transmission capacity. Note:The practical realisation of optoelectronic devices operating in the 210 m (mid-infrared) wavelength range offers potential applications in a variety of areas from environmental gas monitoring around oil rigs and landfillsites to the detection of pha rmaceuticals, particularly narcotics. In addition, an atmospheric transmission window exists between 3 m and 5 m that enables free-space optical communications, thermal imaging applications and thedevelopment of infrared measures for homeland security. Co nsequently, the mid-infrared is very attractive for the development of sensitive optical sensor instrumentation. Unfortunately, the nature of the likely applicationsdictates stringent requirements in terms of laser operation, miniaturisation and cost that are difficult to meet. Many of the necessary improvements are linked to a better ability to fabricate and to understand the optoelectronicproperties of suitable high-quality epitaxial materials and device structures. Substantial progress in these matters is presented here. Mid-infrared Semiconductor Optoelectronics is an overview of the current status and technologicaldevelopment in this rapidly emerging area. It is composed of four parts. First, the basic physics and some of the main problems facing the design engineer (together with a comparison of possible solutions) are laid out. Next, there isa consideration of the multifarious lasers used as sources for mid-infrared technology, including an inspection of current approaches to the lack of such a sou rce in the 34 m region. Part III reviews recent work in light-emittingdiodes and detectors and also deals with negative luminescence. The final part of the book is concerned with applications and highlights, once more, the diversity and technological impo rtance of the mid-infrared spectral region.
