Note:Ge and IIIV compounds, semiconductors with high carrier mobilities, are candidates to replace Si as the channel in MOS devices. 2D materials like graphene and MoS_2 are also envisioned to replace Si in the future. This thesis is devoted to the firs t-principles modeling of the vibrational properties of these novel channel materials. The first part of the thesis focuses on the vibrational properties of various oxides on Ge, making it possibleto identify the vibrational signature of specific defects which could hamper the proper functioning of MOSFETs. The second part of the thesis reports on the electronic and vibrational properties of novel 2D materials like siliceneand germanene, the Si and Ge 2D counterparts of graphene. The interaction of these 2D materials with metallic and non-metallic substrates is investigated. It was predicted, for the first time, and later experimentally confirmed, thatsilicene could be grown on a non-metallic template like MoS_2, a breakthrough that could open the door t o the possible use of silicene in future nanoelectronic devices

The starting point is to find out which timeinvariant distributions come into play in phy sics. A special feature of this book is the historical approach. To identify the problems the author analyzes the papers of the founding fathers Boltzmann, Clausius and Maxwell includingtranslations of the relevant (parts of ) historical documents. He als o establishes a close link between treatment of irreversible phenomena in statistical mechanics and the theory of chaotic systems at and beyond the onset ofturbulence as developed by Sinai, Ruelle, Bowen (SRB) and others: the author gives arguments intend ing to support strongly the viewpoint that stationary states in or out of equilibrium can be described in a unified way. In this book itis the chaotic hypothesis, which can be seen as an extension of the classical ergodic hypothesis to non equilibrium phe nomena, that plays the central role. The aim is to obtain design solutions with improved accuracyfor a wide range of applic ations. To achieve this goal, a few diverse problems are considered. The book is organized with adequate space dedicated for the design and analysis of fractal apertures in waveguides, conducting screens, andcavities, microwave/millimeter wave application s followed by detailed case-study problems to infuse better insight and understanding of the subject. Finally, summaries and suggestions are given for future work. Fractal geometries werewidely used in electromagnetics, specifically for antennas and frequ ency selective surfaces (FSS). The self-similarity of fractal geometry gives rise to a multiband response, whereas the space-filling nature of the fractal geometriesmakes it an efficient element in antenna and FSS unit cell miniaturization. Until now, no efforts were made to study the behavior of these fractal geometries for aperture coupling problems. The aperture coupling problem is an importantboundary value problem in electromagnetics and used in waveguide filters and power dividers, slotted ground pl anes, frequency selective surfaces and metamaterials. The present book is intended to initiate a study of the characteristicsof fractal apertures in waveguides, conducting screens and cavities. To perform a unified analysis of these entirely dissimilar pr oblems, the generalized network formulation of the aperture problems by Mautz and Harrington wasextended to multiple-aperture geometry. The authors consider the problem of coupling between two arbitrary regions coupled together via multiple apertures of a rbitrary shape. MATLAB codes were developed for the problems and validatedwith the results available in the literature as well as through simulations on ANSOFT's HFSS

Note:This thesis has two parts, each based on an application of the renormalization-group (RG). The first part is an analysis of the d-dimensional Coulomb gas. The goal was to determine if the Wilson RG could provide input intoparticle-in-cell simulations in plasma physics, which are the main family of simulation methods used in this field. The role of the RG was to identify the effect of coarse-graining on the coupling constants as a function of thecut-offs. The RG calculation reproduced established resu lts, but in a more concise form, and showed the effect of the cut-offs on the Debye screening length. The main part of the thesis is the application of the dynamic RG toturbulence in magnetohydrodynamics. After transformation to Elsasser variables, which is a symmetrisation of the original equations, the solution is presented as a functional integral, which includes stirring forces, their conjugatesand functional Jacobian. The coarse-graining of the functional integral is represented as a diagrammatic exp ansion, followed by rescaling, and casting the results into differential equations for the analysis of RG trajectories.Detailed comparisons are made with the Navier-Stokes limit and with previous calculations for MHD

Note:This Brief reviews a number of techniques exploiting the surrogate-based optimization concept and variable-fidelity EM simulations for efficient optimization of antenna structures. The introduction of each method is illustratedwith examples of antenn a design. Like its predecessor, the revised and expanded Second Edition of this book addresses the basic principles of fluid mechanics and solves fluid flow problemswhere viscous effects are the dominant physical phenomena. Much progress h as occurred in the nearly half a century that has passed since the edition of 1964. As predicted, aspects of hydrodynamics once considered offbeat have risen toimportance. Note:This monograph is dedicated to the derivation and analysis of fluid models occurring in plasma physics. It focuses on models involving quasi-neutrality approximation, problems related to laser propagation in a plasma, and couplingplasma waves and ele ctromagnetic waves. Applied mathematicians will find a stimulating introduction to the world of plasma physics and a few open problems that are mathematically rich. Physicists who may be overwhelmed by the abundanceof models and uncertain of their underly ing assumptions will find basic mathematical properties of the related systems of partial differential equations. A planned second volume will be devoted to kinetic models. First and foremost, this book mathematically derives certain common fluid models from more general models. Although some of these derivations may be well known tophysicists, it is important to highlight the assumptions underlying the derivations and to realize that some seemingly simple approximations turn out to be more complicated t han they look. Such approximations are justified usingasymptotic analysis wherever possible. Furthermore, efficient simulations of multi-dimensional models require precise statements of the related systems of partial differential equations along with appr opriate boundary conditions. Somemathematical properties of these systems are presented which offer hints to those using numerical methods, although numerics is not the primary focus of the book
