Title:Unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics in Aeronautics [electronic resource]
Author(s): P.G Tucker
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:The field of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and hybrids is a vibrant research area. This book runs through all the potential unsteady modelling fidelity ranges, from low-order to LES. The latter is probably the highest fidelity forpractical aerospace sy stems modelling. Cutting edge new frontiers are defined. One example of a pressing environmental concern is noise. For the accurate prediction of this, unsteady modelling is needed. Hence computationalaeroacoustics is explored. It is also emerging that th ere is a critical need for coupled simulations. Hence, this area is also considered and the tensions of utilizing such simulations with the already expensive LES. This work hasrelevance to the general field of CFD and LES and to a wide variety of non-aero space aerodynamic systems (e.g. cars, submarines, ships, electronics, buildings). Topics treated include unsteady flow techniques LES and hybrids generalnumerical methods computational aeroacoustics computational aeroelasticity coupled simulations and tur bulence and its modelling (LES, RANS, transition, VLES, URANS). The volume concludes by pointing forward to future horizons and inparticular the industrial use of LES. The writing style is accessible and useful to both academics and industrial practitione rs. From the reviews: Tucker's volume provides a very welcome, concise discussion of current capabilitiesfor simulating and modellng unsteady aerodynamic flows. It covers the various possible numerical techniques in good, clear detail and presents a very wide range of practical applications beautifully illustrated in many cases. Thisbook thus provides a valuable text for practicing engineers, a rich source of background information for students and those new to this area of Research & Development, and an excellent state-of-the-art review for others. Title:Dressed Photons [electronic resource] : Concepts of LightMatter Fusion Technology
Author(s): Motoichi Ohtsu
Date:2014
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Authored by the developer of dressed photon science and technology as well as nanophotonics, this book outlines concepts of the subject using a novel theoretical framework that differs from conventional wave optics. It provides aquantum theoretical d escription of optical near fields and related problems that puts matter excitation such as electronic and vibrational ones on an equal footing with photons. By this description, optical near fields are interpretedas quasi-particles and named dressed photo ns which carry the material excitation energy in a nanometric space. The author then explores novel nanophotonic devices, fabrications, and energy conversion based on the theoretical picture ofdressed photons. Further, this book looks at how the assembly of nanophotonic devices produces information and communication systems. Dressed photon science and technology is on its way to revolutionizing various applications indevices, fabrications, and systems. Promoting further exploration in the field, this book presents physically intuitive concepts, theories, and technical details for students, engineers, and scientists engaged in research anddevelopment in dressed photon science and technology as well as nanophotonics

Title:The Art of Science [electronic resource] : From Perspective Drawing to Quantum Randomness
Author(s): Rossella Lupacchini
Annarita Angelini
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Like linear perspective, complex numbers and probability are notable discoveries of the Renaissance. History has been quick to recognize the crucial impact of linear perspective on painting, but reluctant to acknowledge theimportance of complex numbe rs and probability. Both were treated with a great deal of suspicion by the scientific establishment and overlooked for many years. It was only in the twentieth century, when quantum theory defined the notionof complex probability amplitude, that complex numbers merged with probability and transformed the image of the physical world. From a theoretical point of view, however, the space opened to painting by linear perspective and thespace opened to science by complex numbers are equally valuable and share significant characteristics. By exploring that common ground, The Art of Science will lead the reader to complement Leonardos vision of painting as a scienceand to see science as an art. Its aim is to restore a visual dimension to mathematical sciences an element dulled, if not obscured, by historians, philosophers, and scientists themselves

Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:The first derivative of a particle coordinate means its velocity, the second means its acceleration, but what does a fractional order derivative mean? Where does it come from, how does it work, where does it lead to? Thetwo-volume book written on hig h didactic level answers these questions. Fractional Derivatives for Physicists and Engineers The first volume contains a clear introduction into such a modern branch of analysis as the fractionalcalculus. The second develops a wide panorama of applicatio ns of the fractional calculus to various physical problems. This book recovers new perspectives in front of the reader dealing with turbulence and semiconductors, plasma andthermodynamics, mechanics and quantum optics, nanophysics and astrophysics. The bo ok is addressed to students, engineers and physicists, specialists in theory of probability and statistics, in mathematical modeling and numericalsimulations, to everybody who doesn't wish to stay apart from the new mathematical methods becoming more and more popular. Prof. Vladimir V. UCHAIKIN is a known Russian scientist and pedagogue, a Honored Worker of Russian High School,a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He is the author of about three hundreds articles and more than a dozen books (mostly in Russian) in Cosmic ray physics, Mathematical physics, Levy stable statistics, Monte Carlomethods with applications to anomalous processes in complex systems of various levels: from quantum dots to the Milky Way galaxy

Title:Bayesian Hierarchical Space-Time Models with Application to Significant Wave Height [electronic resource]
Author(s): Erik Vanem
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book provides an example of a thorough statistical treatment in space and time of ocean wave data. It is demonstrated how the flexible framework of Bayesian hierarchical space-time models can be applied to oceanographicprocesses such as signific ant wave height in order to describe dependence structures and uncertainties in the data. This monograph is a research book and it is in some sense cross-disciplinary. The methodology itself is firmly rootedin the statistical research tradition, based on probability theory and stochastic processes. However, the methodology has been applied to a problem within physical oceanography, analysing data for significant wave height, which are ofcrucial importance to ocean engineering disciplines. Indeed, the stat istical properties of significant wave height are important for the design, construction and operation of ships and other marine and coastal structures. Furthermore, the book addresses the question of whether climate change has an effect of the ocean wave climate, and if so what these effects might be. Thus, this book is an important contribution to the on-going debate on climate change, itsimplications and how to adapt to a changing climate, with a particular focus on the maritime industries and the marin e environment. This book should be of general interest to anyone with an interest in statistical modelling ofenvironmental processes, and in particular to those with a particular interest in the ocean wave climate. It is written on a level that should be understandable to everyone with a basic background in statistics or elementarymathematics, and an introduction to some basic concepts is given in appendices for the uninitiated reader. The intended readership incudes students and professionals involved in statistics, oceanography, ocean engineering, environmental research, climate sciences and risk assessment. Moreover, different stakeholders within the maritime industries such as design offices, classif
