Note: | These proceedings comprise invited papers from highly experienced researchers in THz technology and security applications. THz detection of explosives represents one of the most appealing technologies to have recently emerged indealing with terrorist attacks encountered by civil security and military forces throughout the world. Discussed are the most advanced technologies and developments, the various points of operational strength and weaknesses as well asare suggestions and predictions the best te chnological solutions to overcome current operational limits. The current status of various levels of cooling in THz detectors, sources and associated electronics are also addressed. Thegoal was to provide a clear view on the current technologies availabl e and the required advances needed in order to achieve more efficient systems. This goal was outlined in part by establishing the baseline of current uncertaintyestimations in physics-based modelling and the identification of key areas which require addit ional research and development. |

Title: | Fundamentals of Fluorescence Microscopy [electronic resource] : Exploring Life with Light |
Author(s): |
Partha Pratim Mondal Alberto Diaspro |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book starts at an introductory level and leads reader to the most advanced developments in fluorescence imaging and super-resolution techniques that have enabled the emergence of new disciplines such as nanobioimaging, multiphoton microscopy, pho todynamic therapy, nanometrology and nanosensors. The interdisciplinary subject of fluorescence microscopy and imaging requires complete knowledge of imaging optics and molecular physics. So, this bookapproaches the subject by introducing optical imaging concepts before going deep into the advanced imaging systems and their applications. Molecular orbital theory forms the basis for understanding fluorescent molecules and therebyfacilitates complete explanation of light-matter interaction at the geometrica l focus. The two disciplines have some overlap since light controls the states of molecules and conversely, molecular states control the emitted light. Thesetwo mechanisms together determine essential fluorescence factors and phenomena such as, molecular cross-section, Stokes shift, emission and absorption spectra, quantum yield, signal-to-noise ratio, Forster resonance energy transfer(FRET), fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence lifetime. These phenomena form the basis of man y fluorescence based devices. The book is organized into two parts. The first part deals with basics of imagingoptics and its applications. The advanced part covers many imaging techniques and related instrumentation that are developed in the last decade pointing towards far-field diffraction limited and unlimited imaging |

Title: | Magnetic Resonance Detection of Explosives and Illicit Materials [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Toma Apih Bulat Rameev Georgy Mozzhukhin Jamie Barras |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Detection of concealed explosives is anotoriously difficult problem, and many different approaches have been proposed to solve this problem. Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) is unique in many ways. It operates in a safe AMradio frequency range, and it can remotely detect unique fingerprint (NQR spectrum) of many explosives, such as TNT or RDX. As such, the detection of target does not depend on the shape or material of the container, or thepresence of metallic object such as triggers etc. Spectra o f chemically similar compounds differ enough that their presence never causes interference or false alarms. Unfortunately, widespread use is prevented due to low sensitivity, radiofrequency interference from the noisy environment, and inability to detect l iquid explosives. This book presents current state of the art of the attempts to overcome NQR sensitivity problem, either by increasing the strengths ofsignals generated, or by increasing the specificity of the technique through a better understanding of the factors that affect the quadrupolar parameters of specific explosives. The use of these specific quadrupolar parameters isdemonstrated on signal processing techniques that can detect weak signals, which are hidden in a noisy background. The problem of differentiation of liquid explosives and benign liquids in closed containers is approached bymeasurements of different nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters. As shown, a couple of solutions has reached a prototype stage and could find their use in a near future |

Title: | Photoelectron Spectroscopy [electronic resource] : Bulk and Surface Electronic Structures |
Author(s): |
Shigemasa Suga Akira Sekiyama |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved inthe last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. Highresolution angle resolved photoelectron sp ectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excitedstates are feasible by time of flight spectroscopywith fully util izing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress byusing higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dep endent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book dealswith the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complemen tary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared andX-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids b ut also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy |

Author(s): |
John R Wallbank |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The last decade has witnessed the discovery of, and dramatic progress in understanding the physics of graphene and related two-dimensional materials. The development of methods for manufacturing and aligning high-qualitytwo-dimensional crystals has f acilitated the creation of a new generation of materials: the heterostructures of graphene with hexagonal crystals, in which the graphene electrons acquire new, qualitatively different properties. Thisthesis provides a comprehensive theoretical framework in which to understand these heterostructures, based on the tight binding model, perturbation theory, group theory and the concept of the moire superlattice (all of which areelucidated). It explains how graphene heterostructures provide new opportunities f or tailoring band structure, such as creating additional Dirac points or opening band gaps, and how they manifest themselvesin transport measurements, optical absorption spectra and the fractal Hofstadter spectra. Also considered arethe heterostructures of bilayer graphene and resonant tunneling in aligned graphene/insulator/graphene devices |

Author(s): |
Luca Salasnich |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The book gives an introduction to the field quantization (second quantization) of light and matter with applications to atomic physics. The first chapter briefly reviews the origins of special relativity and quantum mechanics andthe basic notions of quantum information theory and quantum statistical mechanics. The second chapter is devoted to the second quantization of the electromagnetic field, while the third chapter shows the consequences of the light fieldquantization in the description of electr omagnetic transitions. In the fourth chapter it is analyzed the spin of the electron, and in particular its derivation from the Dirac equation, while the fifth chapter investigates the effects ofexternal electric and magnetic fields on the atomic spectra ( Stark and Zeeman effects). The sixth chapter describes the properties of systems composed by many interacting identical particles by introducing the Hartree-Fock variationalmethod, the density functional theory, and the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Fin ally, in the seventh chapter it is explained the second quantization of the non-relativistic matter field, i.e. the Schrdinger field, which gives apowerful tool for the investigation of many-body problems and also atomic quantum optics. At the end of each chapter there are several solved problems which can help the students to put into practice the things they learned |

Title: | Manis Valuations and Prfer Extensions II [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Manfred Knebusch Tobias Kaiser |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This volume is a sequel to Manis Valuation and Prfer Extensions I, LNM1791. The Prfer extensions of a commutative ring A are roughly those commutative ring extensions R / A,where commutative algebra is governed by Manisvaluations on R with integral v alues on A. These valuations then turn out to belong to the particularly amenable subclass of PM (=Prfer-Manis) valuations. While in Volume I Prfer extensions in general and individual PM valuationswere studied, now the focus is on families of PM valuatio ns. One highlight is the presentation of a very general and deep approximation theorem for PM valuations, going back to Joachim Grters work in 1980, a far-reaching extensionof the classical weak approximation theorem in arithmetic. Another highlight is a theory of so called Kronecker extensions, where PM valuations are put to use in arbitrary commutative ring extensions in a way that ultimatelygoes back to the work of Leopold Kronecker |

Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This volume describes the most recent findings on the structure of ILs interpreted through cutting-edge experimental and theoretical methods. Research in the field of ionic liquids (ILs) keeps a fast and steady pace. Since thesenew-generation molten salts first appeared in the chemistry and physics landscape, a large number of new compounds has been synthesized. Most of themdisplay unexpected behaviour and possess stunning properties. The coverage in thisbook ranges from the mesoscopic structure of I Ls to their interaction with proteins. The reader will learn how diffraction techniques (small and large angle X-Ray and neutron scattering, powder methods), X-Ray absorption spectroscopies(EXAFS/XANES), optical methods (IR, RAMAN), NMR and calorimetric m ethods can help the study of ILs, both as neat liquids and inmixtures with other compounds. It will enable the reader to choose the best method to suit theirexperimental needs. A detailed survey of theoretical methods, both quantum-chemical and classical, and of their predictive power will accompany the exposition of experimental ones. This book is a must read for postgraduate students, for post-docs, and for researchers who are interested in understanding the structural properties of ILs |

Title: | Using Commercial Amateur Astronomical Spectrographs [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Jeffrey L Hopkins |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Amateur astronomers interested in learning more about astronomical spectroscopy now have the guide they need. It provides detailed information about how to get started inexpensively with low-resolution spectroscopy, and then howto move on to more adv anced high-resolution spectroscopy. Uniquely, the instructions concentrate very much on the practical aspects of using commercially-available spectroscopes, rather than simply explaining how spectroscopes work. The book includes a clear explanation of the laboratory theory behind astronomical spectrographs, and goes on to extensively cover the practical application of astronomical spectroscopy in detail. Four popular and reasonably-pricedcommercially available diffraction grating spectrographs are used as examples. The first is a low-resolution transmission diffraction grating, the Star Analyser spectrograph. The second is an inexpensive fiber optic coupled benchspectrograph that can be used to learn more about spectroscopy. The third is a newcomer, the AL PY 600 spectrograph. The fourth spectrograph considered is at the other end of the market both in performance and cost, the high-resolutionLhires III. While considerably more expensive, this is a popular and excellent scientific instrument, that allows mo re advanced amateur astronomers to produce scientifically valuable data. With all of these tools in place, the amateurastronomer is well-prepared to forger deeper into the night sky using spectroscopy |

Title: | Quantum Mechanics for Pedestrians 1: Fundamentals [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Jochen Pade |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book provides an introduction into the fundamentals of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In Part 1, the essential principles are developed. Applications and extensions of the formalism can be found in Part 2. The bookincludes not only material that is presented in traditional textbooks on quantum mechanics, but also discusses in detail current issues such as interaction-free quantum measurements, neutrino oscillations, various topics in the fieldof quantum information as well as fundamental pr oblems and epistemological questions, such as the measurement problem, entanglement, Bell's inequality, decoherence, and the realism debate. A chapter on current interpretations ofquantum mechanics concludes the book. To develop quickly and clearly the ma in principles of quantum mechanics and its mathematical formulation, there is a systematic change between wave mechanics and algebraic representation in thefirst chapters. The required mathematical tools are introduced step by step. Moreover, the appendix collects compactly the most important mathematical toolsthat supplementary literature can be largely dispensed. In addition, theappendix contains advanced topics, such as Quantum- Zeno effect, time-delay experiments, Lenz vector and the Shor algorithm. A bout 250 exercises, most of them with solutions, help to deepen the understanding of the topics. Targetgroups of the book arestudent teachersand all students of physics, as minor or major, looking for a reasonably easy and modern introduction into quantum mechanics |

Philipp Gubler |
Date: | 2013 |
Publisher: | Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The author develops a novel analysis method for QCD sum rules (QCDSR) by applying the maximum entropy method (MEM) to arrive at an analysis with less artificial assumptions than previously held. This is a first-time accomplishmentin the field. In thi s thesis, a reformed MEM for QCDSR is formalized and is applied to the sum rules of several channels: the light-quark meson in the vector channel, the light-quark baryon channel with spin and isospin 1/2, andseveral quarkonium channels at both zero and fi nite temperatures. This novel technique of combining QCDSR with MEM is applied to the study of quarkonium in hot matter, which is an important probe of the quark-gluon plasma currentlybeing created in heavy-ion collision experiments at RHIC and LHC |

Note: | Gaining a theoretical understanding of the properties of ultra-relativistic dense matter has been one of the most important and challenging goals in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this thesis, the author analyzes dense quarkmatter in QCD with gauge group SU(2) using low-energy effective theoretical techniques and elucidates a novel connection between statistical properties of the Dirac operator spectrum at high baryon chemical potential and a specialclass of random matrix theories. This work can be viewed as an extension of a similar correspondence between QCD and matrix models which was previously known only for infinitesimal chemical potentials. In future numerical simulationsof dense matter the analytical results reported here are expected to se rve as a useful tool to extract physical observables such as the BCS gap from numerical data on the Dirac spectrum |

Note: | Random Matrices are one of the major research areas in modern probability theory, due to their prominence in many different fields such as nuclear physics, statistics, telecommunication, free probability, non-commutative geometry, and dynamical system s. A great deal of recent work has focused on the study of spectra of large random matrices on the one hand and on iterated random functions, especially random difference equations, on the other. However, themethods applied in these two research areas are fairly dissimilar. Motivated by the idea that tools from one area could potentially also be helpful in the other, the volume editors have selected contributions that present results andmethods from random matrix theory as well as from the theory of itera ted random functions. This work resulted from a workshop that was held in Mnster, Germany in 2011. The aim of the workshop was to bring together researchers fromtwo fields of probability theory: random matrix theory and the theory of iterated random funct ions. Random matrices play fundamental, yet very different roles in the two fields. Accordingly, leading figures and young researchers gavetalks on their field of interest that were also accessible to a broad audience |

Title: | Theory of Bilayer Graphene Spectroscopy [electronic resource] |

Note: | This thesis presents the theory of three key elements of optical spectroscopy of the electronic excitations in bilayer graphene: angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), visible range Raman spectroscopy, and far-infrared(FIR) magneto-spectr oscopy. Bilayer graphene (BLG) is an atomic two-dimensional crystal consisting of two honeycomb monolayers of carbon, arranged according to Bernal stacking. The unperturbed BLG has a unique band structure, whichfeatures chiral states of electrons with a c haracteristic Berry phase of 2$\pi$, and it has versatile properties which can be controlled by an externally applied transverse electric field and strain. It is shown in this work how ARPESof BLG can be used to obtain direct information about the chirali ty of electron states in the crystal. The author goes on to describe the influence of the interlayer asymmetry, which opens a gap in BLG, on ARPES and on FIR spectra in astrong magnetic field. Finally, he presents a comprehensive theory of inelastic Raman scattering resulting in the electron-hole excitations in bilayer graphene, at zero and quantizing magnetic fields. This predicts their polarizationproperties and peculiar selection rules in terms of the inter-Landau-level transitions |

Note: | The Augmented Spherical Wave (ASW) method is one of the most powerful approaches to handle the requirements of finite basis sets in DFT calculations. It is particularly suited for the calculation of the electronic, magnetic, andoptical properties of solid-state materials. Recent developments allow application, in addition, to the elastic properties and phonon spectra. Due to the localized nature of the ASW basis set these properties can be easily interpretedin terms of atomic-like orbitals. The book addresses all those who want to learn about methods for electronic structure calculations and the ASW method in particular. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and extended. Inparticular, a chapter on the new, both very efficient and accurate s pherical-wave based full potential ASW method has been added |

Title: | Theory of Nonlinear Propagation of High Harmonics Generated in a Gaseous Medium [electronic resource] |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Theory of Nonlinear Propagation of High Harmonics Generated in a Gaseous Medium establishes the theoretical tools to study High-Order Harmonic Generation (HHG) by intense ultrafast infrared lasers inatoms and molecules. Themacroscopic propagation of both laser and high-harmonic fields is taken into account by solving Maxwell's wave equations, while the single-atom or single-molecule response is treated with a quantitative rescattering theory by solvingthe time-dependent Schrdinger equation. This book demonstrates for the first time that observed experimental HHG spectra of atoms and molecules can be accurately reproduced theoretically when precise experimental conditions areknown. The macroscopic HHG can be expressed as a product of a macroscopic wav e packet and a photorecombination cross section, where the former depends on laser and experimental conditions while the latter is the property of targetatoms or molecules. The factorization makes it possible to retrieve microscopically atomic or molecula r structure information from the measured macroscopic HHG spectra. This book also investigates other important issues about HHG, suchas contributions from multiple molecular orbitals, the minimum in the HHG spectrum, the spatial mode of laser beams, and t he generation of an isolated attosecond pulse. Additionally, this book presents the photoelectron angulardistribution of aligned molecules ionized by the HHG light |

Title: | Dimension Theory of Hyperbolic Flows [electronic resource] |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The dimension theory of dynamical systems has progressively developed, especially over the last two decades, into an independent and extremely active field of research. Its main aim is to study the complexity of sets and measuresthat are invariant un der the dynamics. In particular, it is essential to characterizing chaotic strange attractors. To date, some parts of the theory have either only been outlined, because they can be reduced to the case of maps, orare too technical for a wider audience. In this respect, the present monograph is intended to provide a comprehensive guide. Moreover, the text is self-contained and with the exception of some basic results in Chapters 3 and 4, all theresults in the book include detailed proofs. The book is inten ded for researchers and graduate students specializing in dynamical systems who wish to have a sufficiently comprehensive view of the theory together with a workingknowledge of its main techniques. The discussion of some open problems is also included in the hope that it may lead to further developments. Ideally, readers should have some familiarity with the basic notions and results of ergodictheory and hyperbolic dynamics at the level of an introductory course in the area, though the initial chapters al so review all the necessary material |

Title: | Optical Absorption Spectra Calculated Using Linear-Scaling Density-Functional Theory [electronic resource] |

Laura Ratcliff |
Date: | 2013 |
Publisher: | Heidelberg : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |

Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The development of linear-scaling density functional theory (LS-DFT) has made ab initio calculations on systems containing thousands of atoms possible. These systems range from nanostructures to biomolecules. These methods rely onthe use of localized basis sets, which are optimised for the representation of occupied Kohn-Sham states but do not guarantee an accurate representation of the unoccupied states. This is problematic if one wishes to combine the powerof LS-DFT with that of theoretical spectro scopy, which provides a direct link between simulation and experiment. In this work a new method is presented for optimizing localized functions to accurately represent the unoccupied states, thus allowing theoretical spectroscopy of large systems. Results are presented for optical absorption spectra calculated using the ONETEP code, but the method is equally applicable to other spectroscopies and LS formulations. Othertopics covered include a study of some simple one dimensional basis sets and the present ation of two methods for band structure calculation using localized basis sets, both of which have important implications for the use of localizedbasis sets within LS-DFT |

Title: | Spectral and Dynamical Stability of Nonlinear Waves [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Todd Kapitula Keith Promislow |
Date: | 2013 |
Publisher: | New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | This book unifies the dynamical systems and functional analysis approaches to the linear and nonlinear stability of waves. It synthesizes fundamental ideas of the past 20+ years of research, carefully balancing theory andapplication. The book isolate s and methodically develops key ideas by working through illustrative examples that are subsequently synthesized into general principles. Many of the seminal examples of stability theory, including orbitalstability of the KdV solitary wave, and asymptotic stability of viscous shocks for scalar conservation laws, are treated in a textbook fashion for the first time. It presents spectral theory from a dynamical systems and functionalanalytic point of view, including essential and absolute spectra, and devel ops general nonlinear stability results for dissipative and Hamiltonian systems. The structure of the linear eigenvalue problem for Hamiltonian systems iscarefully developed, including the Krein signature and related stability indices. The Evans function for the detection of point spectra is carefully developed through a series of frameworks of increasing complexity. Applications of theEvans function to the Orientation index, edge bifurcations, and large domain limits are developed through illustrative ex amples. The book is intended for first or second year graduate students in mathematics, or those with equivalentmathematical maturity. It is highly illustrated and there are many exercises scattered throughout the text that highlight and emphasize the key concepts. Upon completion of the book, the reader will be in an excellent position tounderstand and contribute to current research in nonlinear stability |

Title: | Cross-Calibration of Far UV Spectra of Solar System Objects and the Heliosphere [electronic resource] |

Publisher: | New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | This book is the result of a working group sponsored by ISSI in Bern, which was initially created to study possible ways to calibrate a Far Ultraviolet (FUV) instrument after launch. In most cases, ultraviolet instruments are wellcalibrated on the gr ound, but unfortunately, optics and detectors in the FUV are very sensitive to contaminants and it is very challenging to prevent contamination before and during the test and launch sequences of a space mission. Therefore, ground calibrations need to be co nfirmed after launch and it is necessary to keep track of the temporal evolution of the sensitivity of the instrument during the mission. The studies presented here cover various fields ofFUV spectroscopy with the exclusion of direct solar UV spectroscopy , including a catalog of stellar spectra, data-sets of lunar Irradiance, observations of comets and measurements of the interplanetary background. Detailed modeling ofthe interplanetary background is presented as well. This work also includes comparisons of older data-sets with current ones. This raises the question of the consistency of the existing data-sets. Previous experiments have beencalibrated independently and comparison of the data-sets may lead to inconsistencies. The authors have tried to chec k that possibility in the data-sets and when relevant, suggest a correction factor for the corresponding data |

Note: | Number theory, spectral geometry, and fractal geometry are interlinked in this in-depth study of the vibrations of fractal strings that is, one-dimensional drums with fractal boundary. This second edition of Fractal Geometry,Complex Dimensions and Ze ta Functions will appeal to students and researchers in number theory, fractal geometry, dynamical systems, spectral geometry, complex analysis, distribution theory, and mathematical physics. The significantstudies and problems illuminated in this work ma y be used in a classroom setting at the graduate level. Key Features include: The Riemann hypothesis is given a natural geometric reformulation in the context ofvibrating fractal strings Complex dimensions of a fractal string are studied in detail, and used to understand the oscillations intrinsic to the corresponding fractal geometries and frequency spectra Explicit formulas are extended to apply to the geometric, spectral, and dynamical zeta functions associated with a fractal Examples of such explic it formulas include a Prime Orbit Theorem witherror term for self-similar flows, and a geometric tube formula The method of Diophantine approximation is used to study self-similar strings and flows Analytical and geometric methods are used toobtain new results about the vertical distribution of zeros of number-theoretic and other zeta functions The unique viewpoint of this book culminates in the definition of fractality as the presence of nonreal complex dimensions. Thefinal chapter (13) is new to the s econd edition and discusses several new topics, results obtained since the publication of the first edition, and suggestions for future developments in the field. Review of the First Edition: Thebook is self contained, the material organized in chapters preceded by an introduction and finally there are some interesting applications of the theor |

Title: | The Spiral Galaxy M33 [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
P Hodge |
Date: | 2012 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | This book summarizes the gathering of information on and the growing understanding of M33 from the 1920s, when Hubble first determined its true nature, to the 21st century, when the Hubble Telescope probed deeply into its manysecrets. With its regula r symmetrical spiral structure, and its being not tilted too much and near enough to allow detailed studies of its stars, M33 is well-suited for the study of a typical spiral galaxy. In this work, Paul Hodgeplaces current research on M33 (and similar gala xies) in both historical and global perspectives. The book is written in a language accessible for specialists and non-specialists, for professional and amateur astronomers, forscientists and the curious public and, most importantly, for students. |

Author(s): |
Robert A Evarestov |
Date: | 2012 |
Edition: | 2nd ed. 2012 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Quantum Chemistry of Solids delivers a comprehensive account of the main features and possibilities of LCAO methods for the first principles calculations of electronic structure of periodic systems. The first part describes thebasic theory underlying the LCAO methods applied to periodic systems and the use of Hartree-Fock(HF), Density Function theory(DFT) and hybrid Hamiltonians. The translation and site symmetry consideration is included to establishconnection between k-space solid state physics and real-space quantum chemistry. The inclusion of electron correlation effects for periodic systems is considered on the basis of localized crystalline orbitals. The possibilities ofLCAO methods for chemical bonding analysis in periodic systems are discusse d. The second part deals with the applications of LCAO methods for calculations of bulk crystal properties, including magnetic ordering and crystal structureoptimization. In the second edition two new chapters are added in the application part II of the b ook. Chapter 12 deals with the recent LCAO calculations and illustrates the efficiency of the scalar-relativistic LCAO method forsolids, containing heavy atoms. Chapter 13 deals with the symmetry properties and the recent applications of LCAO method to in organic nanotubes. New material is added to chapter 9 devoted to LCAO calculations of perfect-crystalproperties. The possibilities of LCAO method for calculation of the high-frequency dielectric constants of crystals and the description of phase transitio ns in solids are discussed. The efficiency of LCAO method in thequantum-mechanics-molecular dynamics approach to the interpretation of x-ray absorption and EXAFS spectra is illustrated. A new section is devoted to recent LCAO calculations of electronic, v ibrational and magnetic properties oftungstates MeWO4 (Me: Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn,Cd) |

Title: | Cosmic Ray Diffusion in the Galaxy and Diffuse Gamma Emission [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Daniele Gaggero |
Date: | 2012 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The original work presented in this thesis constitutes an important contribution to modern Cosmic Ray (CR) physics, and comes during one of the most exciting periods of this field. The first part introduces a new numerical code(DRAGON) to model the C R propagation in our Galaxy. The code is then used to perform a combined analysis of CR data, making it possible to determine their propagation properties with unprecedented accuracy. The second part is dedicatedto a theoretical interpretation of the rece nt crucial experimental results on cosmic electron and positron spectra (PAMELA, Fermi-LAT experiments). Using the tools developed in the first part of the thesis, the author convincinglyargues for the existence of a new spectral component, which could ar ise either from local astrophysical sources, such as pulsars, or from Dark Matter annihilation or decay. This thesis is a highly advanced work the methods, analysisand results are clearly and carefully presented. This work is set to become an important re ference document for any future work in this area |
