Note:Detection of concealed explosives is anotoriously difficult problem, and many different approaches have been proposed to solve this problem. Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) is unique in many ways. It operates in a safe AMradio frequency range, and it can remotely detect unique fingerprint (NQR spectrum) of many explosives, such as TNT or RDX. As such, the detection of target does not depend on the shape or material of the container, or thepresence of metallic object such as triggers etc. Spectra o f chemically similar compounds differ enough that their presence never causes interference or false alarms. Unfortunately, widespread use is prevented due to low sensitivity,radiofrequency interference from the noisy environment, and inability to detect l iquid explosives. This book presents current state of the art of the attempts to overcome NQR sensitivity problem, either by increasing the strengths ofsignals generated, or by increasing the specificity of the technique through a better understanding of the factors that affect the quadrupolar parameters of specific explosives. The use of these specific quadrupolar parameters isdemonstrated on signal processing techniques that can detect weak signals, which are hidden in a noisy background. The problem of differentiation of liquid explosives and benign liquids in closed containers is approached bymeasurements of different nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters. As shown, a couple of solutions has reached a prototype stage and could find their use in a near future

Note:Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved inthe last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. Highresolution angle resolved photoelectron sp ectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excitedstates are feasible by time of flight spectroscopywith fully util izing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress byusing higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dep endent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book dealswith the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complemen tary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared andX-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids b ut also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy

Note:Gaining a theoretical understanding of the properties of ultra-relativistic dense matter has been one of the most important and challenging goals in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this thesis, the author analyzes dense quarkmatter in QCD with gauge group SU(2) using low-energy effective theoretical techniques and elucidates a novel connection between statistical properties of the Dirac operator spectrum at high baryon chemical potential and a specialclass of random matrix theories. This work can be viewed as an extension of a similar correspondence between QCD and matrix models which was previously known only for infinitesimal chemical potentials. In future numerical simulationsof dense matter the analytical results reported here are expected to se rve as a useful tool to extract physical observables such as the BCS gap from numerical data on the Dirac spectrum

Note:This thesis presents the theory of three key elements of optical spectroscopy of the electronic excitations in bilayer graphene: angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), visible range Raman spectroscopy, and far-infrared(FIR) magneto-spectr oscopy. Bilayer graphene (BLG) is an atomic two-dimensional crystal consisting of two honeycomb monolayers of carbon, arranged according to Bernal stacking. The unperturbed BLG has a unique band structure, whichfeatures chiral states of electrons with a c haracteristic Berry phase of 2$\pi$, and it has versatile properties which can be controlled by an externally applied transverse electric field and strain. It is shown in this work how ARPESof BLG can be used to obtain direct information about the chirali ty of electron states in the crystal. The author goes on to describe the influence of the interlayer asymmetry, which opens a gap in BLG, on ARPES and on FIR spectra in astrong magnetic field. Finally, he presents a comprehensive theory of inelastic Raman scattering resulting in the electron-hole excitations in bilayer graphene, at zero and quantizing magnetic fields. This predicts their polarizationproperties and peculiar selection rules in terms of the inter-Landau-level transitions

Note:Theory of Nonlinear Propagation of High Harmonics Generated in a Gaseous Medium establishes the theoretical tools to study High-Order Harmonic Generation (HHG) by intense ultrafast infrared lasers inatoms and molecules. Themacroscopic propagation of both laser and high-harmonic fields is taken into account by solving Maxwell's wave equations, while the single-atom or single-molecule response is treated with a quantitative rescattering theory by solvingthe time-dependent Schrdinger equation. This book demonstrates for the first time that observed experimental HHG spectra of atoms and molecules can be accurately reproduced theoretically when precise experimental conditions areknown. The macroscopic HHG can be expressed as a product of a macroscopic wav e packet and a photorecombination cross section, where the former depends on laser and experimental conditions while the latter is the property of targetatoms or molecules. The factorization makes it possible to retrieve microscopically atomic or molecula r structure information from the measured macroscopic HHG spectra. This book also investigates other important issues about HHG, suchas contributions from multiple molecular orbitals, the minimum in the HHG spectrum, the spatial mode of laser beams, and t he generation of an isolated attosecond pulse. Note:The development of linear-scaling density functional theory (LS-DFT) has made ab initio calculations on systems containing thousands of atoms possible. These systems range from nanostructures to biomolecules. These methods rely onthe use of localized basis sets, which are optimised for the representation of occupied Kohn-Sham states but do not guarantee an accurate representation of the unoccupied states. This is problematic if one wishes to combine the powerof LS-DFT with that of theoretical spectro scopy, which provides a direct link between simulation and experiment. In this work a new method is presented for optimizing localized functions to accurately represent the unoccupied states,thus allowing theoretical spectroscopy of large systems. Results are presented for optical absorption spectra calculated using the ONETEP code, but the method is equally applicable to other spectroscopies and LS formulations. Othertopics covered include a study of some simple one dimensional basis sets and the present ation of two methods for band structure calculation using localized basis sets, both of which have important implications for the use of localizedbasis sets within LS-DFT

Note:This book is the result of a working group sponsored by ISSI in Bern, which was initially created to study possible ways to calibrate a Far Ultraviolet (FUV) instrument after launch. In most cases, ultraviolet instruments are wellcalibrated on the gr ound, but unfortunately, optics and detectors in the FUV are very sensitive to contaminants and it is very challenging to prevent contamination before and during the test and launch sequences of a space mission.Therefore, ground calibrations need to be co nfirmed after launch and it is necessary to keep track of the temporal evolution of the sensitivity of the instrument during the mission. The studies presented here cover various fields ofFUV spectroscopy with the exclusion of direct solar UV spectroscopy , including a catalog of stellar spectra, data-sets of lunar Irradiance, observations of comets and measurements of the interplanetary background. Detailed modeling ofthe interplanetary background is presented as well. This work also includes comparisons of older data-sets with current ones. This raises the question of the consistency of the existing data-sets. Previous experiments have beencalibrated independently and comparison of the data-sets may lead to inconsistencies. The authors have tried to chec k that possibility in the data-sets and when relevant, suggest a correction factor for the corresponding data
