Note:This thesis combines highly accurate optical spectroscopy data on the recently discovered iron-based high-temperature superconductors with an incisive theoretical analysis. Three outstanding results are reported: (1) Thesuperconductivity-induced modi fication of the far-infrared conductivity of an iron arsenide with minimal chemical disorder is quantitatively described by means of a strong-coupling theory for spin fluctuation mediated Cooper pairing.The formalism developed in this thesis also describe s prior spectroscopic data on more disordered compounds. (2) The same materials exhibit a sharp superconductivity-induced anomaly for photon energies around 2.5 eV, two orders ofmagnitude larger than the superconducting energy gap. The author provides a q ualitative interpretation of this unprecedented observation, which is based on the multiband nature of the superconducting state. (3) The thesis also developsa comprehensive description of a superconducting, yet optically transparent iron chalcogenide com pound. The author shows that this highly unusual behavior can be explained as a result of the nanoscopic coexistence of insulating andsuperconducting phases, and he uses a combination of two complementary experimental methods - scanning near-field optical microscopy and low-energy muon spin rotation - to directly image the phase coexistence and quantitativelydetermine the phase composition.These data have important implications for the interpretation of data from other experimental probes

Note:In recent years, the fabrication of nanomaterials and exploration of their properties have attracted the attention of various scientific disciplines such as biology, physics, chemistry, and engineering. Although nanoparticulatesystems are of signific ant interest in various scientific and technological areas, there is little known about the safety of these nanoscale objects. It has now been established that the surfaces of nanoparticles are immediatelycovered by biomolecules (e.g. proteins, ions, and enzymes) upon their entrance into a biological medium. This interaction with the biological medium modulates the surface of the nanoparticles, conferring a biological identity totheir surfaces (referred to as a corona), which determines the subsequent cel lular/tissue responses. The new interface between the nanoparticles and the biological medium/proteins, called bio-nano interface, has been veryrarely studied in detail to date, though the interest in this topic is rapidly growing. In this book, the impor tance of the physiochemical characteristics of nanoparticles for the properties of the protein corona is discussed indetail, followed by comprehensive descriptions of the methods for assessing the protein-nanoparticle interactions. The advantages and limi tations of available corona evaluation methods (e.g. spectroscopy methods, mass spectrometry,nuclear magnetic resonance, electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, and differential centrifugal sedimentation) are examined in detail, followed by a discussi on of the possibilities for enhancing the current methods and a call fornew techniques.
