Title: | Spectral Methods for Non-Standard Eigenvalue Problems [electronic resource] : Fluid and Structural Mechanics and Beyond |
Author(s): |
Clin-Ioan Gheorghiu |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book focuses on the constructive and practical aspects of spectral methods. It rigorously examines the most important qualities as well as drawbacks of spectral methods in the context of numerical methods devoted to solvenon-standard eigenvalue problems. In addition, the book also considers some nonlinear singularly perturbed boundary value problems along with eigenproblems obtained by their linearization around constant solutions. The book ismathematical, poising problems in their proper functi on spaces, but its emphasis is on algorithms and practical difficulties. The range of applications is quite large. High order eigenvalue problems are frequently beset with numericalill conditioning problems. The book describes a wide variety of successful modifications to standard algorithms that greatly mitigate these problems. In addition, the book makes heavy use of the concept of pseudospectrum, which ishighly relevant to understanding when disaster is imminent in solving eigenvalue problems. It also envisions two classes of applications, the stability of some elastic structures and the hydrodynamic stability of some parallel shearflows. This book is an ideal reference text for professionals (researchers) in applied mathematics, computational physics and engineering. It will be very useful to numerically sophisticated engineers, physicists and chemists. The bookcan also be used as a textbook in review courses such as numerical analysis, computational methods in various engineering branches or physics and computational methods in analysis |

Title: | Green's Kernels and Meso-Scale Approximations in Perforated Domains [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Vladimir Maz'ya Alexander Movchan Michael Nieves |
Date: | 2013 |
Publisher: | Heidelberg : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |

Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | There are a wide range of applications in physics and structural mechanics involving domains with singular perturbations of the boundary. Examples include perforated domains and bodies with defects of different types. Theaccurate direct numerical tre atment of such problems remains a challenge. Asymptotic approximations offer an alternative, efficient solution. Greens function is considered here as the main object of study rather than a tool forgenerating solutions of specific boundary value problems. The uniformity of the asymptotic approximations is the principal point of attention. We also show substantial links between Greens functions and solutions of boundary valueproblems for meso-scale structures. Such systems involve a large number of small i nclusions, so that a small parameter, the relative size of an inclusion, may compete with a large parameter, represented as an overall number ofinclusions. The main focus of the present text is on two topics: (a) asymptotics of Greens kernels in domains w ith singularly perturbed boundaries and (b) meso-scale asymptotic approximations of physical fields in non-periodicdomains with many inclusions. The novel feature of these asymptotic approximations is their uniformity with respect to the independent varia bles. This book addresses the needs of mathematicians, physicists and engineers, as well asresearch students interested in asymptotic analysis and numerical computations for solutions to partial differential equations |

Title: | Bounded Noises in Physics, Biology, and Engineering [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Alberto d'Onofrio |
Date: | 2013 |
Publisher: | New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Birkhuser |
Size: | 1 online resource |

Note: | Since the parameters in dynamical systems of biological interest are inherently positive and bounded, bounded noises are a natural way to model the realistic stochastic fluctuations of a biological system that are caused by itsinteraction with the ex ternal world. Bounded Noises in Physics, Biology, and Engineering is the first contributed volumedevoted to the modeling of bounded noises in theoretical and applied statistical mechanics, quantitative biology, and mathematical physics. It gives an overview of the currentstate-of-the-art and isintended to stimulatefurther research. The volumeis organized in four parts. The first part presents the main kinds of bounded noises andtheir applications in theoretical physics. The theory of bounded stochastic pro cesses is intimately linked to its applications to mathematical and statistical physics, and it would be difficult and unnatural to separate the theory fromits physical applications. The second is devoted to framing bounded noises in the theory of random dynamical systems and random bifurcations, while the third is devoted to applications of bounded stochastic processes in biology, one ofthe major areas of potential applications of this subject. The final part concerns the application of bounded stochasti c processes in mechanical and structural engineering, the area where the renewed interest for non-Gaussian boundednoises started. Pure mathematicians working on stochastic calculus will find here a rich source of problems that are challenging from the poi nt of view of contemporary nonlinear analysis. Bounded Noises in Physics, Biology, andEngineering is intended for scientists working on stochastic processes with an interest in both fundamental issues and applications. It will appeal to a broad range of a pplied mathematicians, mathematical biologists, physicists, engineers, and researchers in other fields interested in complexity theory. Itis accessible to anyonewith a working knowl |

Title: | Physics of Collisional Plasmas [electronic resource] : Introduction to High-Frequency Discharges |
Author(s): |
Michel Moisan Jacques Pelletier |
Date: | 2012 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The Physics of Collisional Plasmas deals with the plasma physics of interest to laboratory research and industrial applications, such as lighting, fabrication of microelectronics, destruction of greenhouse gases. Its emphasis ison explaining the phys ical mechanisms, rather than the detailed mathematical description and theoretical analysis. At the introductory level, it is important to convey the characteristic physical phenomena of plasmas, before addressingthe ultimate formalism of kinetic theory, with its microscopic, statistical mechanics approach. To this aim, this text translates the physical phenomena into more tractable equations, using the hydrodynamic model this considers theplasma as a fluid, in which the macroscopic physical parameters ar e the statistical averages of the microscopic (individual) parameters. Thisbook is an introduction to the physics of collisional plasmas, as opposed to plasmas inspace. It is intended for graduate students in physics and engineering . The first chapter in troduces with progressively increasing detail, the fundamental concepts of plasma physic. The motion of individual charged particles invarious configurations of electric and magnetic fields is detailed in the second chapter while the third chapter conside rs the collective motion of the plasma particles described according to a hydrodynamic model. The fourth chapter ismost original in that it introduces a general approach to energy balance, valid for all types of discharges comprising direct current(DC) an d high frequency (HF) discharges, including an applied static magnetic field. The basicconcepts required in this fourth chapter have been progressively introduced in the previous chapters. The text is enriched with approx. 100 figures, and alphabetical in dex and 45 fully resolved problems. Mathematical and physicalappendices provide complementary information or allow to go deeper in a given subject |

Note: | Bringing together key researchers in disciplines ranging from visualization and image processing to applications in structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, elastography, and numerical mathematics, the workshop that generated thisedited volume was the t hird in the successful Dagstuhl series. Its aim, reflected in the quality and relevance of the papers presented, was to foster collaboration and fresh lines of inquiry in the analysis and visualization of tensorfields, which offer a concise model for nume rous physical phenomena. Despite their utility, there remains a dearth of methods for studying all but the simplest ones, a shortage the workshops aim to address. Documenting the latestprogress and open research questions in tensor field analysis, the ch apters reflect the excitement and inspiration generated by this latest Dagstuhl workshop, held in July 2009. The topics they address range from applications of theanalysis of tensor fields to purer research into their mathematical and analytical propertie s. They show how cooperation and the sharing of ideas and data between those engaged in pure and applied research can open new vistas in thestudy of tensor fields |

Starting with the variation principle of statistical mechanics and the energy-entropy balanceprinciple as equilibriu m criteria, results for general boson systems and models are explicitly derived using simple functional analytic calculus. Bridging the gap between ideas of general theoretical physics and the phenomenologicalresearch in the field of Bose systems, this bo ok provides an insight into the fascinating quantum world of bosons. Key topics include the occurrence of BEC and its intimate structural relation with the phenomena of spontaneous symmetrybreaking and off-diagonal long range order the condensate equation the issue concerning the choice of boundary conditions solvable versus non-solvable boson models the set of quasi-free boson states the role of dissipativeperturbations and the surprising but general relation between general quantum fluctuations and boso n systems. Only some knowledge of quantum mechanics and undergraduate algebra and analysis is assumed. This textbook brings studentsand researchers smoothly from general concepts to vivid applications |

Note: | This book provides a modern investigation into the bifurcation phenomena of physical and engineering problems. Systematic methods - based on asymptotic, probabilistic, and group-theoretic standpoints - are used to examineexperimental and computationa l data from numerous examples (soil, sand, kaolin, concrete, domes). For mathematicians, static bifurcation theory for finite-dimensional systems, as well as its implications for practical problems, isilluminated by the numerous examples. Engineers may fi nd this book, with its minimized mathematical formalism, to be a useful introduction to modern bifurcation theory. This second edition strengthens the theoretical backgrounds ofgroup representation theory and its application, uses of block-diagonalization in bifurcation analysis, and includes up-to-date topics of the bifurcation analysis of diverse materials from rectangular parallelepiped sand specimens tohoneycomb cellular solids. Reviews of first edition: The present book gives a wide and deep descript ion of imperfect bifurcation behaviour in engineering problems. the book offers a number of systematic methods based oncontemporary mathematics. On balance, the reviewed book is very useful as it develops a modern static imperfect bifurcation theory and fills the gap between mathematical theory and engineering practice. (Zentralblatt MATH, 2003)The current book is a graduate-level text that presents an overview of imperfections and the prediction of the initial post-buckling response of a system. ... Im perfect Bifurcation in Structures and Materials provides an extensiverange of material on the role of imperfections in stability theory. It would be suitable for a graduate-level course on the subject or as a reference to research workers in the field. ( Applied Mechanics Reviews, 2003) This book isa comprehensive treatment of the static bifurcation problems found in (mainly civil/structural) engineering applications.... The text is well writ |

Title: | IUTAM Symposium on Progress in the Theory and Numerics of Configurational Mechanics [electronic resource] |

Note: | Configurational mechanics has attracted much attention from various research fields over the recent years/decades and has developed into a versatile tool that can be applied to a variety of problems. Since Eshelby's seminal worksa general notion of c onfigurational mechanics has evolved and has successfully been applied to many problems involving various types of defects in continuous media. The most prominent application is the use of configurational forces infracture mechanics. However, as configura tional mechanics is related to arbitrary material inhomogeneities it has also very successfully been applied to many materials science and engineering problems such as phase transitions andinelastic deformations. Also, the modeling of materials with micro -structure evolution is an important field, in which configurational mechanics can provide a better understanding of processes going on within the material. Besidesthese mechanical, physical, and chemical applications, ideas from configurational mechanics are now increasingly applied within computational mechanics. In this regard, in particular the combination of configurational mechanics and thefinite element method has a notable impact on computational mechanics. New methods based on configurational mec hanics are developing in computational fracture mechanics, structural optimization and adaptivity. These methods include, for example, r- and h-adaptive methods for mesh optimization and refinement. The IUTAM Symposium on Progress in the Theory and Numeric s of Configurational Mechanics that took place at the University of Erlangen/Nuremberg, Germany, from October 20th to 24th, 2008, shed light on the most recent state of affairs in configurational mechanics. This proceedings volume brings together a number of peer reviewed papers that were presented at the symposium |

Note: | Today, general relativity rates among the most accurately tested fundamental theories in all of physics. However, deficiencies in our mathematical and conceptual understanding still exist, and these partly hamper further progress. For this reason alon e, but no less important from the point of view that a theory-based prediction should be regarded as no better than one's own structural understanding of the underlying theory, one should undertake seriousinvestigations into the corresponding mathematical issues. This book contains a representative collection of surveys by experts in mathematical relativity writing about the current status of, and problems in, their fields. There arefour contributions for each of the following mathematical areas: differen tial geometry and differential topology, analytical methods and differential equations, and numerical methods. This book addresses graduate students andspecialist researchers alike |

Title: | Large Eddy Simulation for Incompressible Flows [electronic resource] : An Introduction |
Author(s): |
Pierre Sagaut |
Date: | 2006 |
Edition: | Third Edition |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | The first and most exhaustive work of its kind devoted entirely to the subject, Large Eddy Simulation presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient techniquefor approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids and chooses his topics in treating with care both the mathematical ideas andtheir applications. The book addresses resear chers as well as graduate students and engineers. The second edition was a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number ofapplications. Two entirely new chapters were devoted to the coupli ng of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on theReynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. This 3rd edition adds various sections to the text such as a careful error analysis of filtered density function models and multiscale models. It also contains two new chapters dealing withthe mathematical representations of LES and the prediction of active and passive scalar dynamics, which are of considerable interest for engineering and geophysical modeling. The part on geophysical flow has much to offer on a criticalcurrent issue. To quote from the foreword to the third edition written by Charles Meneveau: ... this meticulously assembled and sig nificantly enlarged description of the many aspects of LES will be a most welcome addition to thebookshelves of scientists and engineers in fluid mechanics, LES practitioners, and students of turbulence in general. |

The main topics of both the programs and the book cover the phenomenology, theory and applications of Nonclassical Nonlinearity (NCNL). NCNL techniques have been found inrecent years to be extremely powerful (up to 1000 times mo re than the corresponding linear techniques) in a wide range of applications, including Material Characterization, Ultrasonics, Geophysics and Maintenance and Restoration ofartifacts. These techniques are being adopted as the main inspection and research tool in another European program: AERONEWS (Health monitoring of aircraft by nonlinear elastic wave propagation). In the future, the proposedUniversality of NCNL is expected to extend the range of applications to numerous other fields and scientific disci plines outside acoustics and NDE |

Note: | Finite element method has been the dominant technique in computational mechanics in the past decades, and it has made significant contributions to the developments in engineering and science. Nevertheless, finite element method isnot well suited to p roblems having severe mesh distortion owing to extremely large deformations of materials, encountering moving discontinuities such as crack propagation along arbitrary and complex paths, involving considerablemeshing and re-meshing in structural optimizat ion problems, or having multidomain of influence in multi-phenomenon physical problems. It is impossible to completely overcome those mesh-related difficulties by a mesh-based method. Thehighly structured nature of finite element approximations imposes se vere penalties in the solutions of those problems. Distinguishing with finite element, finite difference and finite volume methods, meshless method discretizes thecontinuum body only with a set of nodal points and the approximation is constructed entirely in terms of nodes. There is no need of mesh or elements in this method. It does not posses the mesh related difficulties, eliminates at leastpart of the FE structure, and provides an approach with more flexibility in the applications in engineering and s cience. The meshless method started to capture the interest of a broader community of researchers only several years ago,and now it becomes a growing and evolving field. It is showing that this is a very rich area to be explored, and has great promise for many very challenging computational problems. On the one hand, great developments on meshlessmethods have been achieved. On the other hand, there are many aspects of meshless methods that could be benefit from improvements. A broader community of researc hers can bring divergent skills and backgrounds to bear on the task ofimproving this method. The main objective of this book is to provide a textbook for graduate courses on the computational analysis o |

Title: | Nonsmooth Mechanics and Analysis [electronic resource] : Theoretical and Numerical Advances |

Note: | This books title, Nonsmooth Mechanics and Analysis, refers to a major domain of mechanics, particularly those initiated by the works of Jean Jacques Moreau. Nonsmooth mechanics concerns mechanical situations with possiblenondifferentiable relationshi ps, eventually discontinuous, as unilateral contact, dry friction, collisions, plasticity, damage, and phase transition. The basis of the approach consists in dealing with such problems without resorting toany regularization process. Indeed, the nonsmooth ness is due to simplified mechanical modeling a more sophisticated model would require too large a number of variables, and sometimes the mechanical information is not available viaexperimental investigations. Therefore, the mathematical formulation becom es nonsmooth regularizing would only be a trick of arithmetic without any physical justification. Nonsmooth analysis was developed, especially in Montpellier,to provide specific theoretical and numerical tools to deal with nonsmoothness. It is important n ot only in mechanics but also in physics, robotics, and economics. Audience This book is intended for researchers in mathematics andmechanics |

Title: | Quantum Field Theory in a Semiotic Perspective [electronic resource] |

Note: | Viewing physical theories as symbolic constructions came to the fore in the middle of the nineteenth century with the emancipation of the classical theory of the electromagnetic field from mechanics most notably this happenedthrough the work of Helmh oltz, Hertz, Poincar, and later Weyl. The epistemological problems that nourished this development are today highlighted within quantum field theory. The present essay starts off with a concise andnon-technical outline of the firmly based aspects of relat ivistic quantum field theory, i.e. the very successful description of subnuclear phenomena. The particular methods, by which these different aspects have to be accessed, thenget described as distinct facets of quantum field theory. The authors show how th ese different facets vary with respect to the relation between quantum fields and associated particles. Thus, by emphasising the respective role ofvarious basic concepts involved, the authors claim that only a very general epistemic approach can properly account for this diversity - an account they trace back to the philosophical writings of the aforementioned physicists andmathematicians. Finally, what they call their semiotic perspective on quantum field theory gets related to recent discussions within the philosophy of science and turns out to act as a counterbalance to, for instance, structuralrealism |

Note: | Astrophysics is facing challenging aims such as deep cosmology at redshift higher than 10 to constrain cosmology models, or the detection of exoplanets, and possibly terrestrial exoplanets, and several others. It requiresunprecedented ambitious R&D p rograms, which have definitely to rely on a tight cooperation between astrophysics and optics communities. The book addresses most of the most critical interdisciplinary domains where they interact, orwhere they will do. A first need is to collect more li ght, i.e. telescopes still larger than the current 8-10 meter class ones. Decametric, and even hectometric, optical (from UV to IR wavelengths) telescopes are being studied. Whereasup to now the light collecting surface of new telescopes was approximately 4 times that of the previous generation, now this factor is growing to 10 to 100. This quantum leap urges to implement new methods or technologies developed inthe optics community, both in academic labs and in the industry. Given the astrophysical goals and technological constraints, new generation adaptive optics with a huge number of actuators and laser guide stars devices have to bedeveloped, from theoretical bases to experimental works. Two other newcomers in observational astrophysics are interferom etric arrays of optical telescopes and gravitational wave detectors. Up-to-date reviews of detectors and ofspectrographs are given, as well as forefront R&D in the field of optical coatings and of guided optics. Possible new ways to handle photons are als o addressed, based on quantum physics. More and more signal processing algorithms are apart and parcel of any modern instrumentation. Thus finally the book gives two reviews about wavefront processing and about image restoration and deconvolution algorith ms for ill conditioned cases |

Note: | Numerous applications of rod structures in civil engineering, aircraft and spacecraft confirm the importance of the topic. On the other hand the majority of books on structural mechanics use some simplifying hypotheses thesehypotheses do not allow to consider some important effects, for instance the boundary layer effects near the points of junction of rods. So the question concerning the limits of applicability of structural mechanics hypotheses and thepossibilities of their refinement arise. In thi s connection the asymptotic analysis of equations of mathematical physics, the equations of elasticity in rod structures (without these hypotheses and simplifying assumptions beingimposed) is undertaken in the present book. Moreover, a lot of modern struc tures are made of composite materials and therefore the material of the rods is not homogeneous. This inhomogeneity of the material can generate some unexpectedeffects. These effects are analysed in this book. The methods of multi-scale modelling are pres ented by the homogenization, multi-level asymptotic analysis and the domain decomposition. These methods give an access to a new class ofhybrid models combining macroscopic description with microscopic zooms |

Note: | In this single volume the reader will find all recent developments in one of the most promising and rapidly expanding branches of continuum mechanics, the mechanics of material forces. The book covers both theoretical andnumerical developments. Conce ptually speaking, common continuum mechanics in the sense of Newtonwhich gives rise to the notion of spatial (mechanical) forcesconsiders the response to variations of spatial placements of physicalparticles with respect to the ambient space, whereas cont inuum mechanics in the sense of Eshelbywhich gives rise to the notion of material (configurational) forcesis concerned with the response to variations of materialplacements of physical particles with respect to the ambient material. Well-known examples of material forces are driving forces on defects like the Peach-Koehler forece, the J-Integral in fracture mechanics, and energy release. The consideration of material forces goes back to the works of Eshelby, who investigated forces on defects therefore thi s area of continuum mechanics is sometimes denoted Eshelbian mechanics. Audience This book is suitable for civiland mechanical engineers, physicists and applied mathematicians |
