Note:There are a wide range of applications in physics and structural mechanics involving domains with singular perturbations of the boundary. Examples include perforated domains and bodies with defects of different types. Theaccurate direct numerical tre atment of such problems remains a challenge. Asymptotic approximations offer an alternative, efficient solution. Greens function is considered here as the main object of study rather than a tool forgenerating solutions of specific boundary value problems. The uniformity of the asymptotic approximations is the principal point of attention. We also show substantial links between Greens functions and solutions of boundary valueproblems for meso-scale structures. Such systems involve a large number of small i nclusions, so that a small parameter, the relative size of an inclusion, may compete with a large parameter, represented as an overall number ofinclusions. Note:The Physics of Collisional Plasmas deals with the plasma physics of interest to laboratory research and industrial applications, such as lighting, fabrication of microelectronics, destruction of greenhouse gases. At the introductory level, it is important to convey the characteristic physical phenomena of plasmas, before addressingthe ultimate formalism of kinetic theory, with its microscopic, statistical mechanics approach. The fourth chapter ismost original in that it introduces a general approach to energy balance, valid for all types of discharges comprising direct current(DC) an d high frequency (HF) discharges, including an applied static magnetic field. The basicconcepts required in this fourth chapter have been progressively introduced in the previous chapters. The text is enriched with approx. 100 figures, and alphabetical in dex and 45 fully resolved problems. Note:Configurational mechanics has attracted much attention from various research fields over the recent years/decades and has developed into a versatile tool that can be applied to a variety of problems. Since Eshelby's seminal worksa general notion of c onfigurational mechanics has evolved and has successfully been applied to many problems involving various types of defects in continuous media. The most prominent application is the use of configurational forces infracture mechanics. However, as configura tional mechanics is related to arbitrary material inhomogeneities it has also very successfully been applied to many materials science and engineering problems such as phase transitions andinelastic deformations. Also, the modeling of materials with micro -structure evolution is an important field, in which configurational mechanics can provide a better understanding of processes going on within the material. Besidesthese mechanical, physical, and chemical applications, ideas from configurational mechanics are now increasingly applied within computational mechanics. In this regard, in particular the combination of configurational mechanics and thefinite element method has a notable impact on computational mechanics. New methods based on configurational mec hanics are developing in computational fracture mechanics, structural optimization and adaptivity. These methods include,for example, r- and h-adaptive methods for mesh optimization and refinement. The IUTAM Symposium on Progress in the Theory and Numeric s of Configurational Mechanics that took place at the University of Erlangen/Nuremberg, Germany,from October 20th to 24th, 2008, shed light on the most recent state of affairs in configurational mechanics. Note:Finite element method has been the dominant technique in computational mechanics in the past decades, and it has made significant contributions to the developments in engineering and science. Nevertheless, finite element method isnot well suited to p roblems having severe mesh distortion owing to extremely large deformations of materials, encountering moving discontinuities such as crack propagation along arbitrary and complex paths, involving considerablemeshing and re-meshing in structural optimizat ion problems, or having multidomain of influence in multi-phenomenon physical problems. It is impossible to completely overcome those mesh-related difficulties by a mesh-based method. Thehighly structured nature of finite element approximations imposes se vere penalties in the solutions of those problems. Distinguishing with finite element, finite difference and finite volume methods, meshless method discretizes thecontinuum body only with a set of nodal points and the approximation is constructed entirely in terms of nodes. There is no need of mesh or elements in this method. It does not posses the mesh related difficulties, eliminates at leastpart of the FE structure, and provides an approach with more flexibility in the applications in engineering and s cience. The meshless method started to capture the interest of a broader community of researchers only several years ago,and now it becomes a growing and evolving field. It is showing that this is a very rich area to be explored, and has great promise for many very challenging computational problems. On the one hand, great developments on meshlessmethods have been achieved. On the other hand, there are many aspects of meshless methods that could be benefit from improvements. A broader community of researc hers can bring divergent skills and backgrounds to bear on the task ofimproving this method. Note:Viewing physical theories as symbolic constructions came to the fore in the middle of the nineteenth century with the emancipation of the classical theory of the electromagnetic field from mechanics most notably this happenedthrough the work of Helmh oltz, Hertz, Poincar, and later Weyl. The epistemological problems that nourished this development are today highlighted within quantum field theory. The present essay starts off with a concise andnon-technical outline of the firmly based aspects of relat ivistic quantum field theory, i.e. the very successful description of subnuclear phenomena. The particular methods, by which these different aspects have to be accessed, thenget described as distinct facets of quantum field theory. The authors show how th ese different facets vary with respect to the relation between quantum fields and associated particles. Thus, by emphasising the respective role ofvarious basic concepts involved, the authors claim that only a very general epistemic approach can properly account for this diversity - an account they trace back to the philosophical writings of the aforementioned physicists andmathematicians. Finally, what they call their semiotic perspective on quantum field theory gets related to recent discussions within the philosophy of science and turns out to act as a counterbalance to, for instance, structuralrealism

The book addresses most of the most critical interdisciplinary domains where they interact, orwhere they will do. A first need is to collect more li ght, i.e. telescopes still larger than the current 8-10 meter class ones. Decametric, and even hectometric, optical (from UV to IR wavelengths) telescopes are being studied. Whereasup to now the light collecting surface of new telescopes was approximately 4 times that of the previous generation, now this factor is growing to 10 to 100. This quantum leap urges to implement new methods or technologies developed inthe optics community, both in academic labs and in the industry. Given the astrophysical goals and technological constraints, new generation adaptive optics with a huge number of actuators and laser guide stars devices have to bedeveloped, from theoretical bases to experimental works. Two other newcomers in observational astrophysics are interferom etric arrays of optical telescopes and gravitational wave detectors. Up-to-date reviews of detectors and ofspectrographs are given, as well as forefront R&D in the field of optical coatings and of guided optics. Possible new ways to handle photons are als o addressed, based on quantum physics. More and more signal processing algorithms are apart and parcel of any modern instrumentation. Thus finally the book gives two reviews about wavefront processing and about image restoration and deconvolution algorith ms for ill conditioned cases

On the other hand the majority of books on structural mechanics use some simplifying hypotheses thesehypotheses do not allow to consider some important effects, for instance the boundary layer effects near the points of junction of rods. So the question concerning the limits of applicability of structural mechanics hypotheses and thepossibilities of their refinement arise. In thi s connection the asymptotic analysis of equations of mathematical physics, the equations of elasticity in rod structures (without these hypotheses and simplifying assumptions beingimposed) is undertaken in the present book. Moreover, a lot of modern struc tures are made of composite materials and therefore the material of the rods is not homogeneous. This inhomogeneity of the material can generate some unexpectedeffects. These effects are analysed in this book.
