Author(s): |
Minoru Yamada |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book provides a unified and complete theory for semiconductor lasers, covering topics ranging from the principles of classical and quantum mechanics to highly advanced levels for readers who need to analyze the complicatedoperating characteristi cs generated in the real application of semiconductor lasers. The author conducts a theoretical analysis especially on the instabilities involved in the operation of semiconductor lasers. A density matrixinto the theory for semiconductor lasers is introd uced and the formulation of an improved rate equation to help understand the mode competition phenomena which cause the optical external feedback noise is thoroughly described from thebasic quantum mechanics. The derivation of the improved rate equation w ill allow readers to extend the analysis for the different types of semiconductor materials and laser structures they deal with. This book is intended not onlyfor students and academic researchers but also for engineers who develop lasers for the market, as the advanced topics covered are dedicated to real problems in implementing semiconductor lasers for practical use |

Title: | Finite Sample Analysis in Quantum Estimation [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Takanori Sugiyama |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Tokyo : Springer Japan : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | In this thesis, the author explains the background of problems in quantum estimation, the necessary conditions required for estimation precision benchmarks that are applicable and meaningful for evaluating data in quantuminformation experiments, and provides examples of such benchmarks. The author develops mathematical methods in quantum estimation theory and analyzes the benchmarks in tests of Bell-type correlation and quantum tomography with thosemethods. Above all, a set of explicit formulae for e valuating the estimation precision in quantum tomography with finite data sets is derived, in contrast to the standard quantum estimation theory, which can deal only with infinitesamples. This is the first result directly applicable to the evaluation of e stimation errors in quantum tomography experiments, allowing experimentalists to guarantee estimation precision and verify quantitatively that theirpreparation is reliable |

Title: | Pulsed Laser Ablation of Solids [electronic resource] : Basics, Theory and Applications |
Author(s): |
Mihai Stafe Aurelian Marcu Niculae N Puscas |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The book introduces the state of the art' of pulsed laser ablation and its applications. It is based on recent theoretical and experimental studies. The book reaches from the basics to advanced topics of pulsed laser ablation.Theoretical and experime ntal fundamental phenomena involved in pulsed laser ablation are discussed with respect to material properties, laser wavelength, fluence and intensity regime of the light absorbed linearly or non-linearly inthe target material. The energy absorbed by the electrons leads to atom/molecule excitation, ionization and/or direct chemical bond breaking and is also transferred to the lattice leading to material heating and phase transitions.Experimental non-invasive optical methods for analyzing these phenomena in real time are described. Theoretical models for pulsed laser ablation and phase transitions induced by laser beams and laser-vapour/plasma interaction duringthe plume expansion above the target are also presented. Calculations of the ablation speed and dimensions of the ablated micro- and nano-structures are performed. The validity and required refinement of different models in differentexperimental conditions is provided. The pulsed laser deposition process which bases on collecting the ablated partic les on a surface is analyzed in terms of efficiency and quality of the deposited films as a function of ambientconditions, target material, laser parameters and substrate characteristics. The interaction between the incident laser and the ablation plasma is analyzed with respect to its influence on the structures of the deposited films and itscapacity to generate high harmonics and single attosecond pulses which are highly desirable in pump-probe experiments |

Note: | Lyons rough path analysis has provided new insights in the analysis of stochastic differential equations and stochastic partial differential equations, such as the KPZ equation. This textbook presents the first thorough andeasily accessible introduct ion to rough path analysis. When applied to stochastic systems, rough path analysis provides a means to construct a pathwise solution theory which, in many respects, behaves much like the theory ofdeterministic differential equations and provides a clean break between analytical and probabilistic arguments. It provides a toolbox allowing to recover many classical results without using specific probabilistic properties such aspredictability or the martingale property. The study of stochastic PDEs has recen tly led to a significant extension the theory of regularity structures and the last parts of this book are devoted to a gentle introduction. Mostof this course is written as an essentially self-contained textbook, with an emphasis on ideas and short arg uments, rather than pushing for the strongest possible statements. A typical reader will have been exposed to upperundergraduate analysis courses and has some interest in stochastic analysis. For a large part of the text, little more than It integration a gainst Brownian motion is required as background |

Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 2nd ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The book deals with dynamical systems, generated by linear mappings of finite dimensional spaces and their applications. These systems have a relatively simple structure from the point of view of the modern dynamical systemstheory. However, for the d ynamical systems of this sort, it is possible to obtain explicit answers to specific questions being useful in applications. The considered problems are natural and look rather simple, but in reality in thecourse of investigation, they confront users with plenty of subtle questions, and their detailed analysis needs a substantial effort. The problems arising are related to linear algebra and dynamical systems theory, and therefore, thebook can be considered as a natural amplification, refinement and supple ment to linear algebra and dynamical systems theory textbooks |

Title: | The Large Scale Structures [electronic resource] : A Window on the Dark Components of the Universe |
Author(s): |
Stphane Ili |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Dark Energy and Dark Matter are among the greatest mysteries in modern cosmology. The present work explores in depth how large cosmic structures can help us unveil the nature of these components of the Universe. One the one hand,it focuses on a signa ture that Dark Energy imprints on the Cosmic Microwave Background through its impact on the time-evolution of gravitational potentials: the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (iSW) effect. Another cosmological background, theCosmic Infrared Background, is considered for the first time in the study of the iSW effect and demonstrated to be a highly efficient and promising tracer. Changing the perspective on the problem, the use of superstructures for iSWdetection is then extensively reviewed: using precise solutions to Einsteins general relativity equations, the full iSW effect is computed, especially due to the cosmic voids predicted by the theory. Using measurements from the mostrecent data, it is subsequently shown how the iSW probes the solidity of the cosmological standard model. On the topic of Dark Matter, an original study is presented, showing that temperature measurements of the intergalactic mediumshed light on the nature of Dark Matter particles, providing the tightest constraints on their decay properties |

Title: | Quantum Theory of Many-Body Systems [electronic resource] : Techniques and Applications |
Author(s): |
Alexandre Zagoskin |
Date: | 2014 |
Edition: | 2nd ed. 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This text presents a self-contained treatment of the physics of many-body systems from the point of view of condensed matter. The approach, quite traditionally, uses the mathematical formalism of quasiparticles and Greensfunctions. In particular, it covers all the important diagram techniques for normal and superconducting systems, including the zero-temperature perturbation theory and the Matsubara, Keldysh and Nambu-Gor'kov formalism, as well as anintroduction to Feynman path integrals. This new ed ition contains an introduction to the methods of theory of one-dimensional systems (bosonization and conformal field theory) and their applications to many-body problems. Intendedfor graduate students in physics and related fields, the aim is not to be ex haustive, but to present enough detail to enable the student to follow the current research literature, or to apply the techniques to new problems. Many of theexamples are drawn from mesoscopic physics, which deals with systems small enough that quantum c oherence is maintained throughout their volume, and which therefore provides an ideal testing ground for many-body theories |

Note: | The Biaowiea Workshops on Geometric Methods in Physics, which are hosted in the unique setting of the Biaowiea natural forest in Poland, are among the most important meetings in the field. Every year some 80 to 100participants from both the mathemati cs and physics world join to discuss new developments and to exchange ideas. The current volume was produced on the occasion of the 32nd meeting in 2013. It is now becoming a tradition that theWorkshop is followed by a School on Geometry and Physics, whic h consists of advanced lectures for graduate students and young researchers. Selected speakers at the 2013 Workshop were asked to contribute to this book, and their work wassupplemented by additional review articles. The selection shows that, despite its now long tradition, the workshop remains at the cutting edge of research. The 2013 Workshop also celebrated the 75th birthday of Daniel Sternheimer, andon this occasion the discussion mainly focused on his contributions to mathematical physics such as def ormation quantization, Poisson geometry, symplectic geometry and non-commutative differential geometry |

Title: | Accurate Calibration of Raman Systems [electronic resource] : At the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment |
Author(s): |
Magnus Schlsser |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Neutrinos can arguably be labeled as the most fascinating elementary particles known as their small but non-zero rest mass points to new mass generating mechanisms beyond the Standard Model, and also assigns primordial neutrinosfrom the Big Bang a di stinct role in shaping the evolution of large-scale structures in the universe. The open question of the absolute neutrino mass scale will be addressed by the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, currently under construction. This thesis reports major contributions to developing and implementing new laser-spectroscopic precision tools to continuously monitor the isotope content of the windowless gaseous tritium source ofKATRIN. The method of choice, Raman spectroscopy, is ideally suited for in-s itu monitoring of all six hydrogen isotopologues. In a series of beautiful experiments the author obtained two independent novel calibration methods, firstbased on a comparison of experimental Raman depolarization ratios with corresponding quantum-chemica l calculations, and second on a gas sampling technique. Both methods yield consistent cross-calibration results and, as well asyielding improvements in precision, will be of major importance in reducing systematic effects in long-term neutrino mass measur ements. The methods developed in this thesis also have great potential to further broaden the applicationsof Raman spectroscopy to study extended sources such as in atmospheric physics. |

Author(s): |
Nicolas Gisin |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Copernicus |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Quantum physics, which offers an explanation of the world onthe smallestscale, has fundamental implications that pose a serious challenge to ordinary logic. Particularly counterintuitive is the notion of entanglement, whichhas been explored for the p ast 30 years and posits an ubiquitous randomness capable of manifesting itself simultaneously in more than one place. This amazing 'non-locality' is more than just an abstractcuriosity or paradox: it hasentirely down-to-earth applications in cryptography, serving for exampleto protect financial information it also has enabled the demonstration of 'quantum teleportation', whose infinite possibilities even science-fiction writers canscarcely imagine. This delightful and conciseexposition does notavoid thede ep logical difficulties of quantum physics, but gives the reader the insights needed to appreciate them. From 'Bell's Theorem' to experiments in quantumentanglement, the reader will gain asolid understanding of one of the most fascinating areas of contemp orary physics |

Title: | Semigroup Methods for Evolution Equations on Networks [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Delio Mugnolo |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This concise text is based on a series of lectures held only a few years ago and originally intended as an introduction to known results on linear hyperbolic and parabolic equations. Yet the topic of differential equations ongraphs, ramified spaces, and more general network-like objects has recently gained significant momentum and, well beyond the confines of mathematics, there is a lively interdisciplinary discourse on all aspects of so-called complexnetworks. Such network-like structures can be fou nd in virtually all branches of science, engineering and the humanities, and future research thus calls for solid theoretical foundations. This book is specifically devoted tothe study of evolution equations i.e., of time-dependent differential equation s such as the heat equation, the wave equation, or the Schrdinger equation (quantum graphs) bearing in mind that the majority of the literature inthe last ten years on the subject of differential equations of graphs has been devoted to elliptic equations and related spectral problems. Moreover, for tackling the most general settings - e.g. encoded in the transmission conditionsin the network nodes - one classical and elegant tool is that of operator semigroups. This book is simultaneously a very concise introduction to this theory and a handbook on its applications to differential equations on networks. Witha more interdisciplinary readership in mind, full proofs of mathematical statements have been frequently omitted in favor of keeping the text as conc ise, fluid and self-contained as possible. In addition, a brief chapter devoted to thefield of neurodynamics of the brain cortex provides a concrete link to ongoing applied research |

Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | A first version of this work appeared in 2005 as a Preprint of the Collaborative Research Center Geometrical Structures in Mathematics at the University of Mnster. Its aim was to offer a concise and self-contained'lecture-style' introduction to the t heory of classical rigid geometry established by John Tate, together with the formal algebraic geometry approach launched by Michel Raynaud. These Lectures are now viewed commonly as an ideal meansof learning advanced rigid geometry, regardless of the rea der's level of background. Despite its parsimonious style, the presentation illustrates a number of key facts even more extensively than any other previous work. This LectureNotes Volume is a revised and slightly expanded version of the original preprint and has been published at the suggestion of several experts in the field |

Title: | Introduction to Matrix Analysis and Applications [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Fumio Hiai Dnes Petz |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Matrices can be studied in different ways. They are a linear algebraic structure and have a topological/analytical aspect (for example, the normed space of matrices) and they also carry an order structure that is induced bypositive semidefinite matri ces. The interplay of these closely related structures is an essential feature of matrix analysis. This book explains these aspects of matrix analysis from a functional analysis point of view. After anintroduction to matrices and functional analysis, it c overs more advanced topics such as matrix monotone functions, matrix means, majorization and entropies. Several applications to quantum information are also included. Introductionto Matrix Analysis and Applications is appropriate for an advanced graduate course on matrix analysis, particularly aimed at studying quantum information. It can also be used as a reference for researchers in quantum information, statistics, engineering and economics |
