The author develops mathematical methods in quantum estimation theory and analyzes the benchmarks in tests of Bell-type correlation and quantum tomography with thosemethods. The book reaches from the basics to advanced topics of pulsed laser ablation.Theoretical and experime ntal fundamental phenomena involved in pulsed laser ablation are discussed with respect to material properties, laser wavelength, fluence and intensity regime of the light absorbed linearly or non-linearly inthe target material. The energy absorbed by the electrons leads to atom/molecule excitation, ionization and/or direct chemical bond breaking and is also transferred to the lattice leading to material heating and phase transitions.Experimental non-invasive optical methods for analyzing these phenomena in real time are described. Theoretical models for pulsed laser ablation and phase transitions induced by laser beams and laser-vapour/plasma interaction duringthe plume expansion above the target are also presented. Calculations of the ablation speed and dimensions of the ablated micro- and nano-structures are performed. The validity and required refinement of different models in differentexperimental conditions is provided. The pulsed laser deposition process which bases on collecting the ablated partic les on a surface is analyzed in terms of efficiency and quality of the deposited films as a function of ambientconditions, target material, laser parameters and substrate characteristics. The interaction between the incident laser and the ablation plasma is analyzed with respect to its influence on the structures of the deposited films and itscapacity to generate high harmonics and single attosecond pulses which are highly desirable in pump-probe experiments

Note:Dark Energy and Dark Matter are among the greatest mysteries in modern cosmology. The present work explores in depth how large cosmic structures can help us unveil the nature of these components of the Universe. One the one hand,it focuses on a signa ture that Dark Energy imprints on the Cosmic Microwave Background through its impact on the time-evolution of gravitational potentials: the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (iSW) effect. Another cosmological background, theCosmic Infrared Background, is considered for the first time in the study of the iSW effect and demonstrated to be a highly efficient and promising tracer. Changing the perspective on the problem, the use of superstructures for iSWdetection is then extensively reviewed: using precise solutions to Einsteins general relativity equations, the full iSW effect is computed, especially due to the cosmic voids predicted by the theory. Using measurements from the mostrecent data, it is subsequently shown how the iSW probes the solidity of the cosmological standard model. On the topic of Dark Matter, an original study is presented, showing that temperature measurements of the intergalactic mediumshed light on the nature of Dark Matter particles, providing the tightest constraints on their decay properties

Note:Neutrinos can arguably be labeled as the most fascinating elementary particles known as their small but non-zero rest mass points to new mass generating mechanisms beyond the Standard Model, and also assigns primordial neutrinosfrom the Big Bang a di stinct role in shaping the evolution of large-scale structures in the universe. The open question of the absolute neutrino mass scale will be addressed by the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment,currently under construction. This thesis reports major contributions to developing and implementing new laser-spectroscopic precision tools to continuously monitor the isotope content of the windowless gaseous tritium source ofKATRIN. The method of choice, Raman spectroscopy, is ideally suited for in-s itu monitoring of all six hydrogen isotopologues. In a series of beautiful experiments the author obtained two independent novel calibration methods, firstbased on a comparison of experimental Raman depolarization ratios with corresponding quantum-chemica l calculations, and second on a gas sampling technique. Both methods yield consistent cross-calibration results and, as well asyielding improvements in precision, will be of major importance in reducing systematic effects in long-term neutrino mass measur ements. The methods developed in this thesis also have great potential to further broaden the applicationsof Raman spectroscopy to study extended sources such as in atmospheric physics.

Yet the topic of differential equations ongraphs, ramified spaces, and more general network-like objects has recently gained significant momentum and, well beyond the confines of mathematics, there is a lively interdisciplinary discourse on all aspects of so-called complexnetworks. Such network-like structures can be fou nd in virtually all branches of science, engineering and the humanities, and future research thus calls for solid theoretical foundations. This book is specifically devoted tothe study of evolution equations i.e., of time-dependent differential equation s such as the heat equation, the wave equation, or the Schrdinger equation (quantum graphs) bearing in mind that the majority of the literature inthe last ten years on the subject of differential equations of graphs has been devoted to elliptic equations and related spectral problems. Moreover, for tackling the most general settings - e.g. encoded in the transmission conditionsin the network nodes - one classical and elegant tool is that of operator semigroups. This book is simultaneously a very concise introduction to this theory and a handbook on its applications to differential equations on networks. Witha more interdisciplinary readership in mind, full proofs of mathematical statements have been frequently omitted in favor of keeping the text as conc ise, fluid and self-contained as possible. In addition, a brief chapter devoted to thefield of neurodynamics of the brain cortex provides a concrete link to ongoing applied research
