Included is a method to identify hidden RDX-based explosives (pure andplastic ones) in the fr equency domain study by Fourier Transformation, which has been complemented by the demonstration of improvement of the quality of the images captured commercially available THz passive cameras. The presentedexamples show large potential for the detection of small hidden objects at long distances (6-10 m). Complementing the results in the short-wavelength range, laser spectroscopy with a mid-infrared, room temperature, continuous wave,DFB laser diode and high performance DFB QCL have been demonstrated to o ffer excellent enabling sensor technologies for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, industrial and security applications. From the new source point ofview a number of systems have been presented - From superconductors to semiconductors, e.g. De tection of Terahertz Waves from Superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+ Intrinsic Josephson Junctions. The quest for a compact room temperatureTHz source and the recent advances in high power mid-IR QCLs lead to the development of a semiconductor THz source based on intracavity difference frequency generation. Furthermore, alternative electrically pumped THz sources based onthe high emission efficiency predicted for polaritonic states in the ultra-strong coupling regime led to the demonstration of electroluminesce nt devices. The condensation energy interaction known for normalprecipitates or grain b oundaries and the kinetic energy interaction proposed for artificial Nb pins in Nb-Ti, etc., are introduced for the pinning mechanism. Summation theories to derive the critical current density are discussed indetail. Irreversible magnetization and AC loss caused by the flux pinning are also discussed. The loss originally stems from the ohmic dissipation of normal electrons in the normal core driven by the electric field induced by the fluxmotion. The readers will learn why the resultant loss is of hystere sis type in spite of such mechanism. The influence of the flux pinning on the vortex phase diagram in high Tc superconductors is discussed, and the dependencies of theirreversibility field are also described on other quantities such as anisotropy of super conductor, specimen size and electric field strength. Recent developments of critical current properties in various high-Tc superconductors andMgB2 are introduced. Other topics are: singularity in the case of transport current in a parallel magnetic field such as deviation from the Josephson relation, reversible flux motion inside pinning potentials which causes deviationfrom the critical state model prediction, the concept of the minimization of energy dissipation in the flux pinning phenomena which give s the basis for the critical state model, etc. Significant reduction in the AC loss in AC wireswith very fine filaments originates from the reversible flux motion which is dominant in the two-dimensional pinning. Three outstanding results are reported: (1) Thesuperconductivity-induced modi fication of the far-infrared conductivity of an iron arsenide with minimal chemical disorder is quantitatively described by means of a strong-coupling theory for spin fluctuation mediated Cooper pairing.The formalism developed in this thesis also describe s prior spectroscopic data on more disordered compounds. (2) The same materials exhibit a sharp superconductivity-induced anomaly for photon energies around 2.5 eV, two orders ofmagnitude larger than the superconducting energy gap. The author provides a q ualitative interpretation of this unprecedented observation, which is based on the multiband nature of the superconducting state. (3) The thesis also developsa comprehensive description of a superconducting, yet optically transparent iron chalcogenide com pound. The author shows that this highly unusual behavior can be explained as a result of the nanoscopic coexistence of insulating andsuperconducting phases, and he uses a combination of two complementary experimental methods - scanning near-field optical microscopy and low-energy muon spin rotation - to directly image the phase coexistence and quantitativelydetermine the phase composition.These data have important implications for the interpretation of data from other experimental probes

Note:In this book the author presents two important findings revealed by high-precision magnetic penetration depth measurements in iron-based superconductors which exhibit high-transition temperature superconductivity up to 55 K: oneis the fact that the s uperconducting gap structure in iron-based superconductors depends on a detailed electronic structure of individual materials, and the other is the first strong evidence for the presence of a quantum criticalpoint (QCP) beneath the superconducting dome of iron-based superconductors. The magnetic penetration depth is a powerful probe to elucidate the superconducting gap structure which is intimately related to the pairing mechanism ofsuperconductivity. The author discusses the possible gap structure of ind ividual iron-based superconductors by comparing the gap structure obtained from the penetration depth measurements with theoretical predictions, indicating thatthe non-universal superconducting gap structure in iron-pnictides can be interpreted in the fra mework of A1g symmetry. This result imposes a strong constraint on the pairing mechanism of iron-based superconductors. The author alsoshows clear evidence for the quantum criticality inside the superconducting dome from the absolute zero-temperature pene tration depth measurements as a function of chemical composition. A sharp peak of the penetration depth at acertain composition demonstrates pronounced quantum fluctuations associated with the QCP, which separates two distinct superconducting phases. This gives the first convincing signature of a second-order quantum phase transition deepinside the superconducting dome, which may address a key question on the general phase diagram of unconventional superconductivity in the vicinity of a QCP

Note:In conventional metals, various transport coefficients are scaled according to the quasiparticle relaxation time, \tau, which implies that the relaxation time approximation (RTA) holds well. However, such a simple scaling does nothold in many strongl y correlated electron systems, reflecting their unique electronic states. The most famous example would be cuprate high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs), where almost all the transport coefficients exhibit a significantdeviation from the RTA results. To better understand the origin of this discrepancy, we develop a method for calculating various transport coefficients beyond the RTA by employing field theoretical techniques. Near the magnetic quantumcritical point, the current vertex correction (CVC), which des cribes the electron-electron scattering beyond the relaxation time approximation, gives rise to various anomalous transport phenomena. We explain anomalous transportphenomena in cuprate HTSCs and other metals near their magnetic or orbital quantum critica l pointusing a uniform approach. We also discuss spin related transport phenomena in strongly correlated systems. In many d- and f-electronsystems, the spin current induced by the spin Hall effect is considerably greater because of the orbital degrees of freedom. This fact attracts much attention due to its potential application in spintronics. We discuss various novelcharge, spin and heat transport phenomena in strongly correlated metals

Note:Common methods of local magnetic imaging display either a high spatial resolution and relatively poor field sensitivity (MFM, Lorentz microscopy), or a relatively high field sensitivity but limited spatial resolution (scanningSQUID microscopy). Since the magnetic field of a nanoparticle or nanostructure decays rapidly with distance from the structure, the achievable spatial resolution is ultimately limited by the probe-sample separation. This thesispresents a novel method for fabricating the smallest superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) that resides on the apex of a very sharp tip. The nanoSQUID-on-tip displays a characteristic size down to 100 nm and a fieldsensitivity of 10^-3 Gauss/Hz^(1/2). A scanning SQUID microsope was constructe d by gluing the nanoSQUID-on-tip to a quartz tuning-fork. This enabled the nanoSQUID to be scanned within nanometers of the sample surface, providingsimultaneous images of sample topography and the magnetic field distribution. This microscope represents a significant improvement over the existing scanning SQUID techniques and is expected to be able to image the spin of a singleelectron
