Title: | Biophysical Effects of Cold Atmospheric Plasma on Glial Tumor Cells [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Julia Kritzer |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Cold atmospheric plasma is an auspicious new candidate in cancer treatment. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a partially ionized gasin whichthe ion temperature is close to room temperature. It contains electrons, chargedparticles, radicals, various e xcited molecules and UV photons. These various compositional elements have the potential to inhibit cancer cell activitywhilst doing no harm tohealthy cells. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common andlethal primary brain tumor in adults treatment including surgery, radio- and chemotherapy remains palliative for most patients as a cureremains elusive. The successful combination of the standard chemotherapeutic temozolomide (TMZ)and CAP treatment features synergistic effects even in resistant glioma cells. I n particular in glioma therapy, CAP could offer an innovative approach allowing specific cancer cell / tumor tissue inhibition without damaging healthycells. Thus CAP is a promising candidate for combination therapy especially for patients suffering from GBMs showing TMZ resistance |

Title: | The Localization Problem in Index Theory of Elliptic Operators [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Vladimir Nazaikinskii Bert-Wolfgang Schulze Boris Sternin |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Basel : Springer Basel : Imprint: Birkhuser |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book deals with the localization approach to the index problem for elliptic operators. Localization ideas have been widely used for solving various specific index problems for a long time, but the fact that there is actuallya fundamental localiz ation principle underlying all these solutions has mostly passed unnoticed. The ignorance of this general principle has often necessitated using various artificial tricks and hindered the solution of important newproblems in index theory. So far, the loca lization principle has scarcely been covered in journal papers. The present book is intended to fill this gap. Both the general localization principle and its applications to specific problems, old and new, are covered. Concisely and clearly written, this monograph includes numerous figures helping the reader to visualize the material. The Localization Problem in Index Theory of Elliptic Operators will be of interest toresearchers as well as graduate and postgraduate students specializing in differential e quations and related topics |

Title: | Statistical Approaches to Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Disorders Research [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Daniele Manfredini Rosa Arboretti Luca Guarda Nardini Eleonora Carrozzo Luigi Salmaso |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book covers the biostatistical methods utilized to interpret and analyze dental research in the areas of orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders. It will guide practitioners in these fields who would like to interpretresearch findings or find examples on the design of clinical investigations. After an introduction dealing with the basic issues, the central sections of the textbook are dedicated to the different types of investigations in sight ofspecific goals researchers may have. The fi nal section contains more elaborate statistical concepts for expert professionals. The field of orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders is emerging as one of the most critical areas ofclinical research in dentistry. Due to the complexity of clinica l pictures, the multifactorial etiology, and the importance of psychosocial factors in all aspects of the TMD practice, clinicians often find it hard to appraise theirmodus operandi, and researchers must constantly increase their knowledge in epidemiology and medical statistics. Indeed, proper methodological designs are fundamental to reaching high levels of internal and external validity offindings in this specific area |

Title: | CGAL Arrangements and Their Applications [electronic resource] : A Step-by-Step Guide |
Author(s): |
Efi Fogel Dan Halperin Ron Wein |
Date: | 2012 |
Publisher: | Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Springer e-book platform |
Note: | Springer 2013 e-book collections |
Note: | Arrangements of curves constitute fundamental structures that have been intensively studied in computational geometry. Arrangements have numerous applications in a wide range of areas examples include geographic informationsystems, robot motion plan ning, statistics, computer-assisted surgery and molecular biology. Implementing robust algorithms for arrangements is a notoriously difficult task, and the CGAL arrangements package is the first robust, comprehensive, generic and efficient implementation o f data structures and algorithms for arrangements of curves. This book is about how to use CGAL two-dimensional arrangements to solve problems. The authors first demonstrate thefeatures of the arrangement package and related packages using small example programs. They then describe applications, i.e., complete standalone programs written on top of CGAL arrangements used to solve meaningful problems forexample, finding the minimum-area triangle defined by a set of points, planning the motion of a polygon translating among polygons in the plane, computing the offset polygon, finding the largest common point sets under approximatecongruence, constructing the farthest-point Voronoi diagram, coordinating the motion of two discs moving among obstacles in the plane, and performing Boolean operations on curved polygons. The book contains comprehensiveexplanations of the solution programs, many illustrations, and detailed notes on further reading, and it is supported by a website that contains downloadable soft ware and exercises. It will be suitable for graduate students andresearchers involved in applied research in computational geometry, and for professionals who require worked-out solutions to real-life geometric problems. It is assumed that the reader is f amiliar with the C++ programming-language andwith the basics of the generic-programming paradigm |

Note: | Mathematics and Technology presents technological applications of mathematics making use of elegant mathematical concepts. The selected subjects consist of: public key cryptography, error correcting codes, the global positioningsystem (GPS) and carto graphy, image compression using fractals and the JPEG format, digital recording, robot movement, DNA computing, Google's PageRank algorithm, savings and loans, gamma ray surgery and random number generators. Theauthors highlight how mathematical modeling, together with the power of mathematical tools, have been crucial for innovation in technology. The exposition is clear, straightforward, motivated by excellent examples, and user-friendly.Numerous exercises at the end of every chapter reinforce the mater ial. An engaging quality is the various historical notes accompanying the mathematical development. This book is intended mainly for undergraduate students in pure andapplied mathematics, physics and computer science, instructors, and high school teachers . The main prerequisites are linear algebra and Euclidean geometry. A few chapters require multivariable calculus and elementary probabilitytheory. A clear indication of the more difficult topics and relatively advanced references make it also suitable fo r an independent reader mastering the prerequisites |

Note: | These lecture notes contain a guided tour to the Novikov Conjecture and related conjectures due to Baum-Connes, Borel and Farrell-Jones. They begin with basics about higher signatures, Whitehead torsion and the s-CobordismTheorem. Then an introductio n to surgery theory and a version of the assembly map is presented. Using the solution of the Novikov conjecture for special groups some applications to the classification of low dimensional manifolds aregiven. Finally, the most recent developments concer ning these conjectures are surveyed, including a detailed status report.
