Title: | Fundamentals of Fluorescence Microscopy [electronic resource] : Exploring Life with Light |
Author(s): |
Partha Pratim Mondal Alberto Diaspro |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This book starts at an introductory level and leads reader to the most advanced developments in fluorescence imaging and super-resolution techniques that have enabled the emergence of new disciplines such as nanobioimaging, multiphoton microscopy, pho todynamic therapy, nanometrology and nanosensors. The interdisciplinary subject of fluorescence microscopy and imaging requires complete knowledge of imaging optics and molecular physics. So, this bookapproaches the subject by introducing optical imaging concepts before going deep into the advanced imaging systems and their applications. Molecular orbital theory forms the basis for understanding fluorescent molecules and therebyfacilitates complete explanation of light-matter interaction at the geometrica l focus. The two disciplines have some overlap since light controls the states of molecules and conversely, molecular states control the emitted light. Thesetwo mechanisms together determine essential fluorescence factors and phenomena such as, molecular cross-section, Stokes shift, emission and absorption spectra, quantum yield, signal-to-noise ratio, Forster resonance energy transfer(FRET), fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence lifetime. These phenomena form the basis of man y fluorescence based devices. The book is organized into two parts. The first part deals with basics of imagingoptics and its applications. The advanced part covers many imaging techniques and related instrumentation that are developed in the last decade pointing towards far-field diffraction limited and unlimited imaging |

Note: | This book provides an introduction to mathematical and computer-oriented modeling and to simulation as a universal methodology. It therefore addresses various model classes and their derivations. And it demonstrates the diversityof approaches that ca n be taken: be it discrete or continuous, deterministic or stochastic. A common underlying theme throughout the book are the means in which one obtains practical simulation results from these different abstractmodels. Subsequent to a brief review of the mathematical tools that are required, the concept of the simulation pipeline, from model derivation to the simulation, is applied to 14 example scenarios from diverse fields such asGame theory - deciding - planning, Traffic on highways and data highways, Dynamical systems and Physics in the computer. Whether it is game theory or mathematical finance, traffic or control theory, populationdynamics or chaos, or molecular dynamics, continuum mechanics or computer graphics - the reader gains insight into the world of simulation in a descriptive yet systematic way |

Title: | Control of Nonholonomic Systems: from Sub-Riemannian Geometry to Motion Planning [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Frdric Jean |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | Nonholonomic systems are control systems which depend linearly on the control. Their underlying geometry is the sub-Riemannian geometry, which plays for these systems the same role as Euclidean geometry does for linear systems. Inparticular the usual notions of approximations at the first order, that are essential for control purposes, have to be defined in terms of this geometry. The aim of these notes is to present these notions of approximation and theirapplication to the motion planning problem f or nonholonomic systems |

Title: | Tautological Control Systems [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Andrew D Lewis |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This brief presents a description of a new modelling framework for nonlinear/geometric control theory. The framework is intended to beand shown to befeedback-invariant. As such, Tautological Control Systems provides aplatform for understanding fundam ental structural problems in geometric control theory. Part of the novelty of the text stems from the variety of regularity classes, e.g., Lipschitz, finitely differentiable, smooth, real analytic, withwhich it deals in a comprehensive and unified manner. The treatment of the important real analytic class especially reflects recent work on real analytic topologies by the author. Applied mathematicians interested in nonlinear andgeometric control theory will find this brief of interest as a starting point for work in which feedback invariance is important. Graduate students working in control theory may also find Tautological Control Systems to be astimulating starting point for their research |

Title: | Model-Based Control of Networked Systems [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Eloy Garcia Panos J Antsaklis Luis A Montestruque |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Birkhuser |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | This monograph introduces a class of networked control systems (NCS) called model-based networked control systems (MB-NCS) and presents various architectures and control strategies designed to improve the performance of NCS. Theoverall performance of NCS considers the appropriate use of network resources, particularly network bandwidth, in conjunction with the desired response of the system being controlled. The bookbegins with a detailed description ofthe basic MB-NCS architecture that provides sta bility conditions in terms of state feedback updates . It also covers typical problems in NCS such as network delays, network scheduling, and data quantization, as well as more generalcontrol problems such as output feedback control, nonlinear systems sta bilization, and tracking control. Key features and topics include: Time-triggered and event-triggered feedback updates Stabilization of uncertain systems subjectto time delays, quantization, and extended absence of feedback Optimal control analysis and d esign of model-based networked systems Parameter identification and adaptive stabilization of systems controlled over networks The MB-NCSapproach to decentralized control of distributed systems Model-Based Control of Networked Systemswill appeal to resea rchers, practitioners, and graduate students interested in the control of networked systems, distributed systems, and systems with limited feedback |

Title: | General Pontryagin-Type Stochastic Maximum Principle and Backward Stochastic Evolution Equations in Infinite Dimensions [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Qi L Xu Zhang |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | The classical Pontryagin maximum principle (addressed to deterministic finite dimensional control systems) is one of the three milestones in modern control theory. The corresponding theory is by now well-developed in thedeterministic infinite dimensi onal setting and for the stochastic differential equations. However, very little is known about the same problem but for controlled stochastic (infinite dimensional) evolution equations when the diffusionterm contains the control variables and the control domains are allowed to be non-convex. Indeed, it is one of the longstanding unsolved problems in stochastic control theory to establish the Pontryagintype maximum principle for thiskind of general control systems: this book aims to give a solution to thi s problem. This bookwill beuseful for both beginners and experts who are interested in optimal control theory for stochastic evolution equations |

Title: | Probing Correlated Quantum Many-Body Systems at the Single-Particle Level [electronic resource] |
Author(s): |
Manuel Endres |
Date: | 2014 |
Publisher: | Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer |
Size: | 1 online resource |
Note: | How much knowledge can we gain about a physical system and to what degree can we control it? In quantum optical systems, such as ion traps or neutral atoms in cavities, single particles and their correlations can now be probed ina way that is fundame ntally limited only by the laws of quantum mechanics. In contrast, quantum many-body systems pose entirely new challenges due to the enormous number of microscopic parameters and their small length- and shorttime-scales. This thesis describes a new approa ch to probing quantum many-body systems at the level of individual particles: Using high-resolution, single-particle-resolved imaging and manipulation of strongly correlated atoms, singleatoms can be detected and manipulated due to the large length and ti me-scales and the precise control of internal degrees of freedom. Such techniques lay stepping stones for the experimental exploration of new quantum many-bodyphenomena and applications thereof, such as quantum simulation and quantum information, through the design of systems at the microscopic scale and the measurement of previously inaccessible observables |
