Title:The Mathematics Teacher in the Digital Era [electronic resource] : An International Perspective on Technology Focused Professional Development
Author(s): Alison Clark-Wilson
Ornella Robutti
Nathalie Sinclair
Date:2014
Publisher:Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:This volume addresses the key issue of the initial education and lifelong professional learning of teachers of mathematics to enable them to realize the affordances of educational technology for mathematics. With invitedcontributions from leading sch olars in the field, this volume contains a blend of research articles and descriptive texts. In the opening chapter John Mason invites the reader to engage in a number of mathematics tasks that highlightimportant features of technology-mediated mathematic al activity. This is followed by three main sections: An overview of current practices in teachers use of digital technologies in the classroom and explorations of thepossibilities for developing more effective practices drawing on a range of research per spectives (including grounded theory, enactivism and Valsiners zone theory). Aset of chapters that share many common constructs (such asinstrumental orchestration, instrumental distance and double instrumental genesis) and research settings that have emer ged from the French research community, but have also been taken up by other colleagues. Meta-level considerationsof research in the domain by contrasting different approaches and proposing connecting or uniting elements

Title:Frontiers of Fundamental Physics and Physics Education Research [electronic resource]
Author(s): Burra G Sidharth
Marisa Michelini
Lorenzo Santi
Date:2014
Publisher:Cham : Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:In a knowledge-based society, research into fundamental physics plays a vital role not only in the enhancement of human knowledge but also in the development of new technology that affects everday life. The international symposiumseries Frontiers of F undamental Physics (FFP) regularly brings together eminent scholars and researchers working in various areas in physics to exchange expertise, ideas, results, and new research perspectives. The twelfth suchsymposium, FFP12, took place at the University of Udine, Italy, and covered diverse fields of research: astrophysics, high energy physics and particle physics, theoretical physics, gravitation and cosmology, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, computational physics, and mathematical physics. I mportantly, it also devoted a great deal of attention to physics education research, teacher training in modern physics, and popularization of physics. The highscientific level of FFP12 was guaranteed by the careful selection made by scientific coordinato rs from among 250 submissions from 28 countries across the world. During the three days of the conference, nine general talks were deliveredin plenary sessions, 29 invited talks were given in specific topic areas, and 59 oral presentations were made. This book presents a selection of the best contributions at FFP12 with the aim of acquainting readers with the mostimportant recent advances in fundamental physics and in physics education and teacher development

Title:Alfred Tarski [electronic resource] : Early Work in PolandGeometry and Teaching
Author(s): Andrew McFarland
Joanna McFarland
James T Smith
Date:2014
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York : Imprint: Birkhuser
Size:1 online resource
Note:Alfred Tarski (19011983) was a renowned Polish/American mathematician, a giant of the twentieth century, who helped establish the foundations of geometry, set theory, model theory, algebraic logic, and universal algebra.Throughout his career, he taug ht mathematics and logic at universities and sometimes in secondary schools. Many of his writings before 1939 were in Polish and remained inaccessible to most mathematicians and historians until now. Thisself-contained book focuses on Tarskis early contri butions to geometry and mathematics education, including the famous BanachTarski paradoxical decomposition of a sphere as well as high-school mathematical topics and pedagogy. These themes are significant since Tarskis later research on geometry and its fo undations stemmed in part from his early employment as a high-school mathematics teacher and teacher-trainer. The book contains careful translations andmuch newly uncovered social background of these works written during Tarskis years in Poland. Alfred Ta rski: Early Work in PolandGeometry and Teaching serves the mathematical, educational, philosophical, and historicalcommunities by publishing Tarskis early writings in a broadly accessible form, providing background from archival work in Poland, and updati ng Tarskis bibliography

Title:The Pleasures of Statistics [electronic resource] The Autobiography of Frederick Mosteller
Author(s): Frederick Mosteller
Stephen E Fienberg
David C Hoaglin
Judith M Tanur
Date:2010
Publisher:New York, NY : Springer New York
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:From his unique perspective, renowned statistician and educator Frederick Mosteller describes many of the projects and events in his long career. From humble beginnings in western Pennsylvania to becoming the founding chairman ofHarvard Universitys D epartment of Statistics and beyond, he inspired many statisticians, scientists, and students with his unabashed pragmatism, creative thinking, and zest for both learning and teaching. This candid account offersfresh insights into the qualities that made M osteller a superb teacher, a prolific scholar, a respected leader, and a valued advisor. A special feature of the book is its chapter-length insider accounts of work on the pre-electionpolls of 1948, statistical aspects of the Kinsey report on sexual beha vior in the human male, mathematical learning theory, authorship of the disputed Federalist papers, safety of anesthetics, and a wide-ranging examination of theColeman report on equality of educational opportunity. This volume is a companion to Selected P apers of Frederick Mosteller (Springer, 2006) and A Statistical Model: Frederick Mostellers Contributions to Statistics, Science, andPublic Policy (Springer-Verlag, 1990). Frederick Mosteller (19162006) was Roger I. Lee Professor of Mathematical Statistic s at Harvard University. His manuscript was unfinished at his death and has been updated
