Note:Terahertz (THz) and Mid-Infrared (MIR) radiation (TERA-MIR) can be transmitted through nearly any material without causing biological harm. Novel and rapid methods of detection can be created with devices operation in thesespectral ranges allowing sc anning for weapons, detecting hidden explosives (including plastic landmines), controlling the quality of food and a host of other exciting applications. This book focuses on mathematical and physicalaspects of the field, on unifying these two spectral do mains (THz and MIR) with regard to common sources, detectors, materials and applications, and on key interdisciplinary topics. The main THz and MIR source is the quantum cascadelaser (QCL). Thus significant attention is paid to the challenge of turning th is advanced technology into affordable commercial devices so as to exploit its enormous potential. However other alternatives to THz QCLs are also presented,e.g. sub-terahertz imaging from avalanching GaAs bipolar transistors, Josephson junctions as THz s ources, semiconductor materials for pulsed THz sources, superconducting THz electronics with Josephson vortices. In summary thisbook delivers a global picture of the state of the art in TERA-MIR generation, detection and applications

Note:Terahertz science and technology is attracting great interest due to its application in a wide array of fields made possible by the development of new and improved terahertz radiation sources and detectors. This book focuses onthe development and cha racterization of one such source - namely the semi-large aperture photoconducting (PC) antenna fabricated on Fe-doped bulk Ga0.69In0.31As substrate. The high ultrafast carrier mobility, high resistivity, andsubpicosecond carrier lifetime along with low ba ndgap make Ga0.69In0.31As an excellent candidate for PC antenna based THz emitter that can be photoexcited by compact Yb-based multiwatt laser systems for high power THz emission. Theresearch is aimed at evaluating the impact of physical properties of a s emi-large aperture Ga0.69In0.31As PC antenna upon its THz generation efficiency, and is motivated by the ultimate goal of developing a high-power terahertzradiation source for time-domain terahertz spectroscopy and imaging systems.
