Similar to the standard nonlinear H approach, the proposed nonsmooth designguarantees both the internal asympto tic stability of anominal closed-loop system and the dissipativity inequality, which statesthat the size of an error signal is uniformly bounded with respect to the worst-case size of an externaldisturbance signal. This guarantee is achieved by constructi ng an energy or storage function that satisfies the dissipativity inequality andis then utilized as a Lyapunov functiontoensurethe internal stability requirements. Advanced H Control is unique in the literature for its treatment of disturbance attenuation in nonsmooth systems. It synthesizes various tools, including HamiltonJacobiIsaacs partial differential inequalities as well asLinear Matrix Inequalities. Along with the finite-dimensional treatment, the synthesis is extended to infinite-dimensional sett ing, involving time-delay and distributed parameter systems. To help illustrate this synthesis, the bookfocuses onelectromechanical applicationswithnonsmooth phenomena caused by dry friction, backlash, and sampled-data measurements. Special attention is d evoted to implementation issues. Requiring familiarity with nonlinearsystems theory, this book will be accessible to graduate students interested in systems analysis and design, and is a welcome additionto the literature forresearchers and practitioners in these areas

The book starts with a textbook-like expose on nonlinear dynamics, attractors and chaos, both temporal and spatio-temporal, including modern techniques ofchaoscontrol. Chapter 2 turns to the edge of chaos, in the form of phase transitions (equilibrium and non-equilibrium, oscillatory, fractal and noise-induced), as well as the related field of synergetics. While the natural stage forlinear dynamics comprises of flat, Euclidean geometry (with the corresponding cal culation tools from linear algebra and analysis), the natural stage for nonlinear dynamics is curved, Riemannian geometry (with the corresponding toolsfrom nonlinear, tensor algebra and analysis). The extreme nonlinearity chaos corresponds to the topolo gy change of this curved geometrical stage, usually called configuration manifold. Chapter 3 elaborates on geometry andtopology change in relation with complex nonlinearity and chaos. Chapter 4 develops general nonlinear dynamics, continuous and discrete, deterministic and stochastic, in the unique form of path integrals and their action-amplitudeformalism. This most natural framework for representing both phase transitions and topology change starts with Feynmans sum over histories, to be quickly general ized into the sum over geometries and topologies.
