Title:Advances in Combinatorics [electronic resource] : Waterloo Workshop in Computer Algebra, W80, May 26-29, 2011
Author(s): Ilias S Kotsireas
Eugene V Zima
Date:2013
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This volume, as Andrew M. Odlzyko writes in the foreword, commemorates and celebrates the life and achievements of an extraordinary person. Originally conceived as an 80th birthday tribute to Herbert Wilf, the well-knowncombinatorialist, the book has evolved beyond the proceeds of the W80 tribute. Professor Wilf was an award-winning teacher, who was supportive of women mathematicians, and who had an unusually high proportion of women among his PhDcandidates. He was Editor-in-chief of the American Mat hematical Monthly and a founder of both the Journal of Algorithms and of the Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. But he was first a researcher, driven by his desire to know andexplain the inner workings of the mathematical world. The book collects high- quality, refereed research contributions by some of Professor Wilfs colleagues, students, and collaborators. Many of the papers presented here werefeatured in the Third Waterloo Workshop on Computer Algebra (WWCA 2011, W80), held May 26-29, 2011 at Wilfri d Laurier University, Waterloo, Canada. Others were included because of their relationship to his important work incombinatorics. All are presented as a tribute to Herb Wilfs contributions to mathematics and mathematical life

Title:The Crossing of Heaven [electronic resource] Memoirs of a Mathematician
Author(s): Karl Gustafson

Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:As one of the most prolific mathematicians of our time, Karl Gustafson has been a central figure in the astonishing technological revolution of the last half-centurya revolution which has transformed human life. This, his ownaccount of his journey th rough those decades, takes the reader from his early pioneering work in computing and espionage, where his contribution was vital to the American Cold War effort, to his observations on core contemporary issuessuch as the stability of the worlds financial system. Gustafsons crucial role in top-secret military intelligence, which saw him tracking Russian submarines, intercepting electronic intelligence and writing the software forAmericas first spy satellite, is related here for the first time. His narrati ve includes fascinating encounters with Nobel laureates and figures of historical importance, the European post-doctoral fellowships that expanded hisperspectives on science and life, and hair-raising stories from his early rock-climbing days including br ushes with death then and later, such as being struck by lightning and knocked unconscious near a mountain top. Gustafsonswide-ranging mathematical accomplishments have led to invitations and travel throughout the world, and he tells of the greatand at ti mes strangepersonalities he has met along the way. His unique journey has included hard knocksand beautiful women, who have, as he likes to say, added to the great adventure
