Title:Singularities of Differentiable Maps, Volume 2 [electronic resource] : Monodromy and Asymptotics of Integrals

Publisher:Boston : Birkhuser Boston : Imprint: Birkhuser

Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Originally published inthe 1980s, Singularities of DifferentiableMaps: Monodromy and Asymptotics of Integrals was thesecond oftwovolumes that togetherformed a translation of the authors'influential Russian monographon singularity theory. This uncorrec ted softcover reprint of the work brings its still-relevant content back into the literature, making it availableand affordableto a global audience of researchers and practitioners. Whilethe first volume of this title, subtitled Classification of Critical Points, Caustics and Wave Fronts, contained the zoology of differentiable mapsthat is, was devoted to a description of what, where, and how singularities could beencounteredthis second volume concentrates on elements of theanatomy and physiology of singu larities of differentiable functions. The questions considered here are about the structure of singularities and how they function. Inthe first part the authors consider the topological structure of isolated critical points of holomorphic functions: vanis hing cycles distinguished bases intersection matricesmonodromy groupsthe variation operatorand theirinterconnections and method of calculation. The second part is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behavior of integrals of the method of stationary pha se, which is widely met within applications. The third and last part dealswith integrals evaluated over level manifolds in a neighborhood of the critical point of a holomorphic function. Thismonograph is suitablefor mathematicians, researchers, postgradua tes, and specialists in the areas ofmechanics, physics, technology, and other sciences dealing with the theory of singularities of differentiable maps

Title:Nonlinear Science [electronic resource] : The Challenge of Complex Systems
Author(s): Zensho Yoshida
Date:2010
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This book gives a general, basic understanding of the mathematical structure nonlinearity that lies in the depths of complex systems. Analyzing the heterogeneity that the prefix non represents with respect to notions suchas the linear space, integrab ility and scale hierarchy, nonlinear science is explained as a challenge of deconstruction of the modern sciences. This book is not a technical guide to teach mathematical tools of nonlinear analysis, nor a zoology of so-called nonlinear phenomena. By crit ically analyzing the structure of linear theories, and clarifying their limitation, this book makes the meaning of nonlinear (and, at the same time, of linear) precise andconcrete. The core material is accessible to a much broader audience beyond speciali sts. It also includes notes that describe more advanced materials for extended studies which might be rather non-trivial for specialists in physics andmathematics

Title:Historical Encyclopedia of Natural and Mathematical Sciences [electronic resource]
Author(s): Ari Ben-Menahem
Date:2009
Publisher:Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg
Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:This milestone extensive work combines the essentials of history biography, chronology, political and economic background with the observations, theories, principles, laws and equations that constitute the specifics ofscience. The 5800-page Encyclo pedia arises from the conviction that the optimal perspective on science is through the lens of history, setting aside traditional divisions of discipline and specialty, and rising above geopoliticalboundaries. Reaching from 4,200 BCE to the 21st century CE, the Encyclopedia relates (as the author himself puts it) not only who did it and when it was done but also precisely what was done. The author, Ari Ben-Menahem, surveys100 generations of great thinkers, offering 2070 detailed biographies of scientists , engineers, explorers and inventors, who left their mark on the history of science and technology. The span of coverage is all-encompassing:mathematics, philosophy, logic, physical and environmental sciences (including physics, chemistry, astronomy, eart h and space sciences and cosmology), life sciences (biology, medicine, physiology, botany, zoology and biochemistry),associated engineering disciplines, and the social sciences (among them economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, linguistics and mo re). The six-volume Encyclopedia also includes 380 articles summarizing the time-line of ideas inthe leading fields of science, technology, mathematics and philosophy, plus useful tables, figures and photos, and 20 Science Progress Reports detailing scien tific setbacks. Interspersed throughout are quotations, gathered fromthe wit and wisdom of sages, savants and scholars throughout the ages from antiquity to modern times

Size:1 online resource
Note:Springer e-book platform
Note:Springer 2013 e-book collections
Note:Physics of the Human Body comprehensively addresses the physical and engineering aspects of human physiology by using and building on first-year college physics and mathematics. Topics include the mechanics of the static body andthe body in motion, t he materials properties of the body, muscles in the body, the energetics of body metabolism, fluid flow in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the acoustics of sound waves in speaking and hearing, visionand the optics of the eye, the electrical pr operties of the body, and the basic engineering principles of feedback and control in regulating all aspects of function. The goal of this text is to understand physical issues concerning thehuman body, in part by developing and then using simple and subs equently more refined models of the macrophysics of the human body. Many chapters include a brief review of the necessary physical principles. There are problems at theend of each chapter solutions to selected problems are also provided. This text is gear ed to undergraduates interested in physics, medical applications of physics, quantitative physiology, medicine, and biomedical engineering
