Note:The TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility uses the isotope separation on-line (ISOL) technique to produce rare-isotope beams (RIB). The ISOL system consists of a primary production beam, a target/ion source, amass separator, and be am transport system. The rare isotopes produced during the interaction of the proton beam with the target nucleus are stopped in the bulk of the target material. They diffuse inside the target material matrix tothe surface of the grain and then effuse to the ion source where they are ionized to form an ion beam that can be separated by mass and then guided to the experimental facilities. Note:This thesis presents theoretical and numerical studies on phenomenological description of the quarkgluon plasma (QGP), a many-body system of elementary particles. The author formulates a causal theory of hydrodynamics forsystems with net charges fro m the law of increasing entropy and a momentum expansion method. The derived equation results can be applied not only to collider physics, but also to the early universe and ultra-cold atoms. The authoralso develops novel off-equilibrium hydrodynamic mod els for the longitudinal expansion of the QGP on the basis of these equations. Numerical estimations show that convection and entropy production during the hydrodynamic evolution arekey to explaining excessive charged particle production, recently observe d at the Large Hadron Collider. Note:The book covers the flux pinning mechanisms and properties and the electromagnetic phenomena caused by the flux pinning common for metallic, high-Tc and MgB2 superconductors. The condensation energy interaction known for normalprecipitates or grain b oundaries and the kinetic energy interaction proposed for artificial Nb pins in Nb-Ti, etc., are introduced for the pinning mechanism. Summation theories to derive the critical current density are discussed indetail. Irreversible magnetization and AC loss caused by the flux pinning are also discussed. The loss originally stems from the ohmic dissipation of normal electrons in the normal core driven by the electric field induced by the fluxmotion. The readers will learn why the resultant loss is of hystere sis type in spite of such mechanism. The influence of the flux pinning on the vortex phase diagram in high Tc superconductors is discussed, and the dependencies of theirreversibility field are also described on other quantities such as anisotropy of super conductor, specimen size and electric field strength. Recent developments of critical current properties in various high-Tc superconductors andMgB2 are introduced. Other topics are: singularity in the case of transport current in a parallel magnetic field such as deviation from the Josephson relation, reversible flux motion inside pinning potentials which causes deviationfrom the critical state model prediction, the concept of the minimization of energy dissipation in the flux pinning phenomena which give s the basis for the critical state model, etc. Significant reduction in the AC loss in AC wireswith very fine filaments originates from the reversible flux motion which is dominant in the two-dimensional pinning. The concept of minimum energy dissipation explains also the behavior of flux bundle size which determines theirreversibility line under the flux creep. The book reaches from the basics to advanced topics of pulsed laser ablation.Theoretical and experime ntal fundamental phenomena involved in pulsed laser ablation are discussed with respect to material properties, laser wavelength, fluence and intensity regime of the light absorbed linearly or non-linearly inthe target material. The energy absorbed by the electrons leads to atom/molecule excitation, ionization and/or direct chemical bond breaking and is also transferred to the lattice leading to material heating and phase transitions.Experimental non-invasive optical methods for analyzing these phenomena in real time are described. Theoretical models for pulsed laser ablation and phase transitions induced by laser beams and laser-vapour/plasma interaction duringthe plume expansion above the target are also presented. Calculations of the ablation speed and dimensions of the ablated micro- and nano-structures are performed. The validity and required refinement of different models in differentexperimental conditions is provided. The pulsed laser deposition process which bases on collecting the ablated partic les on a surface is analyzed in terms of efficiency and quality of the deposited films as a function of ambientconditions, target material, laser parameters and substrate characteristics. The interaction between the incident laser and the ablation plasma is analyzed with respect to its influence on the structures of the deposited films and itscapacity to generate high harmonics and single attosecond pulses which are highly desirable in pump-probe experiments

Note:Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved inthe last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. Highresolution angle resolved photoelectron sp ectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excitedstates are feasible by time of flight spectroscopywith fully util izing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress byusing higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dep endent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book dealswith the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complemen tary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared andX-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids b ut also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy

Note:Warm Dense Matter (WDM) occupies a loosely defined region of phase space intermediate between solid, liquid, gas, and plasma, and typically shares characteristics of two or more of these phases. WDM is generally associated withthe combination of stro ngly coupled ions and moderately degenerate electrons, and careful attention to quantum physics and electronic structure is essential. The lack of a small perturbation parameter greatly limits approximateattempts at its accurate description. Since WDM res ides at the intersection of solid state and high energy density physics, many high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments pass through this difficult region of phase space. Thus,understanding and modeling WDM is key to the success of experiments on div erse facilities. These include the National Ignition Campaign centered on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), pulsed-power driven experiments on the Z machine,ion-beam-driven WDM experiments on the NDCX-II, and fundamental WDM research at the Linear Coh erent Light Source (LCLS). Note:The main goal of the book is to provide a systematic and didactic approach to the physics and technology of free-electron lasers. Numerous figures are used for illustrating the underlying ideas and concepts, and links to otherfields of physics are pr ovided. After an introduction to undulator radiation and the low-gain FEL, the one-dimensional theory of the high-gain FEL is developed in a systematic way. Particular emphasis is put on explaining andjustifying the various assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the differential and integral equations governing the FEL dynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions are presented and important FEL parameters aredefined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. One of the mos t important features of a high-gain FEL, the formation of microbunches, is studied at length. The increase of gain length due to beam energy spread, spacecharge forces, and three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction is analyzed. The mechanism of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimentalresults. Various methods of FEL seeding by coherent external radiation are introduced, together with experimental results. The worlds first soft X-ray FEL, the user facility FLASH at DESY, is described in some detail to give animpression of the complexity of such an accelerator-based light source. The last chapter is devoted to the new hard X-ray FELs which generate extremel y intense radiation in the Angstrm regime. The appendices contain supplementarymaterial and more involved calculations.

This workadvoc ates one intriguing possibility for a consistent cosmology that fills in the theoretical gaps while being fully in accordance with the observational data. At very high energies, the universe mighthave been in a false vacuum state that preserved B-L, the d ifference between the baryon number B and the lepton number L as a local symmetry. In this state, the universe experienced a stage of hybrid inflation that only ended when thefalse vacuum became unstable and decayed, in the course of a waterfall transitio n, into a phase with spontaneously broken B-L symmetry. This B-L Phase Transition was accompanied by tachyonic preheating that transferred almost theentire energy of the false vacuum into a gas of B-L Higgs bosons, which in turn decayed into heavy Majoran a neutrinos. Eventually, these neutrinos decayed into massless radiation, thereby producing the entropy of the hot big bang,generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe via the leptogenesis mechanism and setting the stage for the production of dark mat ter. Next to a variety of conceptual novelties and phenomenological predictions, the main achievement ofthe thesis is hence the fascinating notion that the leading role in the first act of our universe might have actually been played by neutrinos
