Note:The thesisdescribes the development of an entirely new experimental platform for generating and studying converging radiative shock waves. It was discovered that the application of large magnetic pressures to gas-filledcylindrical metallic tubes coul d sequentially produce three shocks within the gas. Note:The study of quantum disorder has generated considerable research activity in mathematics and physics over past 40 years. While single-particle models have been extensively studied at a rigorous mathematical level, little wasknown about systems of se veral interacting particles, let alone systems with positive spatial particle density. Creating a consistent theory of disorder in multi-particle quantum systems is an important and challenging problem thatlargely remains open. Multi-scale Analysis for Ra ndom Quantum Systems with Interaction presents the progress that had been recently achieved in this area. The main focus of the book is on a rigorous derivation of themulti-particle localization in a strong random external potential field. To make the pr esentation accessible to a wider audience, the authors restrict attention to a relatively simple tight-binding Anderson model on a cubic lattice Zd. Nonlinear optical properties of media such as optical limiting can be applied in various areas of science andtechnology. To define suitable materials for these applications, o ne has to carefully analyse the nonlinear optical characteristics of various media, such as the nonlinear refractive indices, coefficients of nonlinear absorption,saturation absorption intensities, etc. Knowing the nonlinear optical parameters of material s is also important for describing the propagation effects, self-interaction of intense laser pulses, and optimisation of various nonlinearoptical processes. Among those processes one can admit the importance of the studies of the frequency conversion of coherent laser sources. The area of interest for nonlinear optical characterization of materials is also closelyrelated with new field of nanostructures formation and application during laser-matter interaction. We show how the nonlinear optical analysis of materials leads to improvement of their high-order nonlinear optical response during theinteraction with strong laser fields. Ablation-induced nanoparticles formation is correlated with their applications as efficient sources of coherent short-waveleng th photons. From other side, recent achievements of harmonic generationin plasmas are closely related with the knowledge of the properties of materials in the laser plumes. All of these studies are concerned with the low-order nonlinear optical features o f various materials. The novelty of the approachdeveloped in present book is related with inter-connection of those studies with each other

Note:The rheology of dense red blood cell suspensions is investigated via computer simulations based on the lattice Boltzmann, the immersed boundary, and the finite element methods. The red blood cells are treated as extended anddeformable particles immer sed in the ambient fluid. In the first part of the work, the numerical model and strategies for stress evaluation are discussed. In the second part, the behavior of the suspensions in simple shear flow isstudied for different volume fractions, particle de formabilities, and shear rates. Shear thinning behavior is recovered. The existence of a shear-induced transition from a tumbling to a tank-treading motion is demonstrated. Thetransition can be parameterized by a single quantity, namely the effective capi llary number. It is the ratio of the suspension stress and the characteristic particle membrane stress. At the transition point, a strong increase in theorientational order of the red blood cells and a significant decrease of the particle diffusivity are observed. However, the average cell deformation shows no signature of the transition

The field therefore straddles statistical, particle and nuclear physics, both conceptually andin the methods of investigation used. Th is course-tested primer addresses above all the many young scientists starting their scientific research in this field, providing them with a general, self-contained introduction thatemphasizes in particular the basic concepts and ideas, with the aim of e xplaining why we do what we do. To achieve this goal, the present text concentrates mainly on equilibrium thermodynamics: first, the fundamental ideas of stronginteraction thermodynamics are introduced and then the main concepts and methods used in the st udy of the physics of complex systems are summarized. Subsequently, simplified phenomenological pictures, leading to critical behavior inhadronic matter and to hadron-quark phase transitions are introduced, followed by elements of finite-temperature latti ce QCD leading to the important results obtained in computer simulation studies of the lattice approach. Next, therelation of the resulting critical behavior to symmetry breaking/restoration in QCD is clarified before the text turns to the study of the QC D phase diagram. The presentation of bulk equilibrium thermodynamics is completed by studyingthe properties of the quark-gluon plasma as new state of strongly interacting matter.The final chapters of the book are devoted to more specific topics which aris e when nuclear collisions are considered as a tool for the experimentalstudy of QCD thermodynamics

Note:Black hole gravitohydromagnetics (GHM) is developed from the rudiments to the frontiers of research in this book. GHM describes plasma interactions that combine the effects of gravity and a strong magnetic field, in the vicinity(ergosphere) of a rapi dly rotating black hole. This topic was created in response to the astrophysical quest to understand the central engines of radio loud extragalactic radio sources. The theory describes a torsional tug of warbetween rotating ergospheric plasma and the dist ant asymptotic plasma that extracts the rotational inertia of the black hole. The recoil from the struggle between electromagnetic and gravitational forces near the event horizon ismanifested as a powerful pair of magnetized particle beams (jets) that are ejected at nearly the speed of light. These bipolar jets feed large-scale magnetized plasmoids on scales as large as millions of light years (the radio lobes ofextragalactic radio sources). This interaction can initiate jets that transport energy fluxes exceeding 1047 ergs/s. This second edition of the book is updated throughout and contains a completely new chapter discussing state of theart and results of numerical simulations of ergospheric disk jets occuring in magnetohydrodynamic accretion flows

Two complementary approaches, the binary collision model and the dielectric theory areinvestigated in both analyt ical and numerical frameworks. In the binary collision model, the Coulomb interaction between the test and the target particles is screened because of the polarization of the target. In the continuumdielectric theory one considers the interactions between the test particle and its polarization cloud.
